Cinemas are dying because people are tired of being told good/bad messages in sappy, propaganda oriented fiction. Hopefully the new interactive communications mediums will kill off the old wave of debilitating propaganda from the old media, and hopefully the limits of copyright and patent that stems from them will be abolished, for patents and copyrights prevent people from speaking and building, unless their thing is so filled with BS that it qualifies as "new".

It would be if it was admissible.

I`ve seen just about every major release of the summer so far and I really only feel good about paying for a couple of them.

Nightmare on elm street, diary of a wimpy kid, jonah hex, just wright, splice, sex and the city 2, the killers, knight and day, letters to juliet, marmaduke, solitary man, shrek 4, grown ups and The last airbender were not worth my money, in fact if I could get my money back ($10 a pop) I would.

despicable me, predators, cyrus, get him to the greek, the a-team, prince of persia, please give, clash of the titans, shutter island, hot tub time machine, the losers and the karate kid are one-time watchers.

Harry brown, exit through the gift shop, the girl with the dragon tattoo, date night, iron man 2 and winters bone are the only movies I would consider purchasing.

Maybe the movie industry should focus on making less crap, because I pay for my poo and get burned.

@Feugo

Ok well I`ll do some research, time difference is like 15-17hrs? We`ll both go see a movie at the same time and talk on mobile phones so you can hear me yell at the youths of today for your moneys worth.

Sounds good?

That`s such BS. There have ALWAYS been pirates. Look at seed counts for Pirate CAMS. Assuming five or six cams have been posted, usually all of them horrible re-encodes from the same crap source file, at an average of 2600 Leeches per torrent thats 13000 Users who will actually download the cam. 13000 users who would not have shelled out the cash in the FIRST PLACE.

No money is "LOST" simply because there was no money to be "GAINED"

I still go to theaters to see a new re-lease because seriously, CAMs are outright HORRIBLE! If you watch a CAM you are just DETERMINED to sit through that mess.

eh, the price of the theaters in my city went up since AMC took over and they are no longer owned by Kerasotes, and now you have to buy a large popcorn and soda to get a free refill, and they don`t even refill icees anymore period... Torrents are sounding pretty good now..

Yeah i spent between 1-2 weeks downloading prince of persia (not many people had it most of the time i was capped at 15kbs) and it was 4.7gb so i was like "^.^ dvd quality! has to be worth it!". Well it was filmed in a cinema, quality was as good as a VCD and it had foreign subtitles. I`ll pay 50 bucks for me and a friend to go gold class and get free popcorn and soft drinks. Most of you IABers can sneak in pepsi max cans or whatever, YOU DONT HAVE TO BUY THE OVER PRICED BEVERAGES.

Alot of people are also saying they don`t go to cinemas because of people talking/gum&popcorn on floor. I don`t know what sort of cinemas that aren`t clean >.> you can always change seats. And yeah I tell teenagers to shut the hell up. They don`t expect it and can sometimes make them bounce off their seat by like a foot haha.

Anyone wanna come see a movie with me? :) My shout

Most independent cinemas are long gone (where I am anyway.) It`s hard to feel sorry for 30 & 40 screen megaplexes who bought into the circle jerk. A night out with the family - scratch that - a sunday morning out with the family sets me back 80 USD. I can`t secure a loan for a night out with the family :( I`ll just continue to stream Netflix, eat my $1 popcorn and drink my 30¢ softdrinks.

I download DVDs usually the ones that are still in the cinema are of crappy quality. Hey I don`t care what they say or how many oppressive and violating rules they make I will download because I find movie tickets, blu-ray prices and video game prices to be extremely out of hand. Besides, sharing is caring ;)

66stang: "What they really need to do is make pricing by movie ratings. The lower the rating the lower the price. but while they charge 12 bucks a movie for even the crapiest movies I will continue to torrent them."

I see your point, but it will only end in arbitrary ratings. Those that pay the most to the critics get the best ratings, get more income of ticketsale. But I still agree that paying 8-9 euros (10-11 dollars) for a movie like Disaster Movie is pure rip-off (much like the film itself).

so the $50 bucks for a movie I mentioned earlier... well that was at the mall at mall prices for 2.

But I usually go to the drive in. $8 per person. Microwave popcorn from home and a Big Gulp from 7-11 {$1 ea} ... AND it`s 2 movies! A Double Feature! woo hoo

But I still will rent a movie and copy/burn it. Why? `Cause they aren`t worth $20-25 or {$30 for a blue ray}. They`r worth $5-7. I`ll pay that much. no more

@Dr_Sexy On the bright side, I think the internet/an open source environment lets independent film makers, novelists and artists get out there more and be seen by more people, when 20 years ago they probably would not have gotten much exposure at all. Sure, the big time corporations of media that have more money for advertising will always have more viewers, but the internet can get anyone a lot of exposure for little to no money. It`s pretty powerful.

You make a good point about how the "art" of film-making, novel-writing and music will continue to deteriorate. That`s nothing new, really. I don`t think it has anything to do with piracy either. It really has more to do with the combination of the masses being too easily impressed and it being cheaper to mass-market a crappy product than actually make a good one.

the greed of the major producers will definitely outway the artistic temperament of the directors who are under increasing pressure to make films manufactured for wider audiences. independant film has to work hard to compete but hopefully this will help film to becoming more experimental hopefully feeding into more esoteric film-making for the future with more furtive ideas. high concept releases will need to step into not only science fiction but also the outskirts of the graphic novella areas of contemporay fiction to gain audience(check out the last decade as example of how this will continue). see for examples the remakes of `let the right one in`;`let me in`, `diner des cons`-`dinner for schmucks`, `rec/rec2`. hollywood is in dire need of seminal ideas, this i think has nothing to do with piracy but the way film-making works on the higher echelons. take for example `avatar` - hugely successful in terms of revenue/majorly "by the numbers" in terms of storytelling.

@addler, then why did you say "Lol, as everything becomes digital and "open source" there will be a lot less ads out there." That makes no sense, and it contradicts what you are saying now. Also, there would still be plenty of variety in the ads you`d see because there would STILL be ads for free content to assure that the ads in the free content are seen.

More ads is the way the world is going if we become a more open source world, which we are. It`s impossible to stop free content thanks to the internet, so soon the digital media world will have to learn to swing with it. I don`t think it`s really a bad thing. There would just a lot more product placement. It`s either more ads or back to paying for that DVD box set of the Lord of the Rings.

thats exactly what I was mocking you about...whats the point of the aforementioned industries when ads will completely ruin the experience. Especially considering that people are becoming desensitized to advertising, there will be more and more ads up our bums than currently imaginable.

To be fair though, I should have clarified that there would be less diversity in ads. I like variety in the products im forced to see

You`d still have to buy food, insurance, medicines, cars, clothing and many, many other things like that. There would still be plenty of ads for those. Don`t fool yourself, ads won`t disappear anytime soon. Infact, there would have to be more ads if things went more open source so that the companies that make those movies or music you enjoy for free can have funds to well, continue to make movies and music.

Also, there would still be ads for free content so that you`ll watch the content and they can stuff it full of ads so they can make money. Yeah, ads are definitely not going extinct.

has anyone noticed much more product placement in films these days? that + the price of admission and half an hour of adverts leaves me wondering if piracy is the cause or producers just grabbing money left right and centre and making it as an excuse. cinema is an organic medium, it`s changed over the decades, it needs to adapt a la 3d and new technology to make it a more engaging spectacle.
