    Hahaha no way, yesterday I was joking about downloading a vuvuzela MIDI file into my keyboard and recording an album based on that. Every single key would play the exact same note.

    technically it IS an instrument, but wat catagory does it fall into? woodwind surely but the things are made of plastic thus nullifying the term `wood` in the instrumental family. But on the same note what family does a Kazoo or a Harmonica belong to aswell? surely if they are all supposedly `woodwind` instruments then it`s a pretty dire choice of name for such a widely spoken term as the first half of the name is completly void. Also what would now distinguish `Brass` from `Woodwind` if not the material they are comprised of as they can both have keys or be keyless and they both work via the exhaling of the player.

    this has been Sock1122.

    thank you, and goodnight.

    @Sock1122 The difference between brass and woodwind is whether the instrument has a reed. I cant remember which HAS the reed, but one has a reed the other does not. It has nothing to do with the material the instrument is comprised of.

    Sock1122 you`re a douche, woodwind does not mean that the instrument is made from wood. A saxophone is a woodwind instruments. The same applies to brass instruments, very few are made from brass. An instrument is a woodwind instrument if a reed is used, not so in the case of the vuvuzela. Therefore due solely to the method that it is played and NOT due to the materials that it is constructed the vuvuzela is a brass instrument; as the sound that is produced is produced in the same way that one would produce a sound on other brass instruments, such as the trumpet, the trombone or more fitting to the vuvuzela, the bugle.

    This has been jackcregg and good night.

    @sock1122
    the "family" the recorder (or english flute) belongs to is known as `fipple flutes` which essentially consists of other whistle like instruments, that makes it a woodwind

    woodwinds don`t HAVE to have reeds

    "woodwinds don`t HAVE to have reeds "

    just by the term it hints at that. woodwinds are instruments, typically or at least originally, made of wood that you blow air through to make a noise. the only reason a saxophone, despite being made of brass original and still, is considered a woodwind over a brass instrument is the construction of the mouthpiece which is much like that of other woodwinds and the excess amount of buttons, again very woodwindy.

    btw, common instrument that is a woodwind but not made of wood and doesn`t have a reed, a flute/fife/piccolo

    as for the vuvuzela, if you buzz your lips prior to the instrument, its a brass

    "Brass instruments are also called labrosones, literally meaning `lip-vibrated instruments`"

    Sock1122, the recorder belongs to the woodwind family and thank you to IkeRay for pointing out my mistake. I admit that woodwind instruments don`t have to have reeds.
