So what is it trying to do in the count dracula form? Is it trying to look more like a snake? Or is it trying to make itself look like a meager meal?

And then I liked it again when it was reposted here a few months back.

So I guess I also like this post?

@adam432823-

The small window with audience reactions is a Japanese thing. They do it alot with shows there. They like seeing what other people think and how they react.

It`s kind of like how at baseball games they pan the camera across the people in the bleaches.

1. If it pulls the cat trick to scare away a 70cm predator, surely it could just pull the same trick on the 35cm predator. Surely it`d be twice as effective. Why have a completely different behaviour?

2. It keeps eye contact, I believe, so that if the large predator DOES make attack, at least it has a chance to see the attack coming and attempt to flee.

3. Cats are far from "top of the food chain". Here in Canada, large owls regularly snatch small dogs and cats for food. Large raptors are emphatically NOT (linky) scared of small felines, as this owl would appear to be mimicking.

Getting too much into the "is it pretending to be a branch or a cat" thing, but I find it interesting. I first heard about this behaviour on the award-winning David Attenborough nature documentary "The Life of Birds". admittedly in that clip (can`t find it now) the owl was much more convincing at its branch-impression!

But another couple of things don`t stack up with the cat-theory (and yes, admittedly it does look somewhat feline).

So what purpose does making himself look like Dracula serve? I understand becoming "larger" for the sake of scaring away predators, but flattening his feathers and looking smaller would make him look like easier prey, one would think.

It looks like he`s changing into a cat. If he was pretending not to be an animal, he wouldn`t move when the other owl moved, but instead he keeps eyecontact. Most animals try to stay away from cats, as they are the top of the food chain.

My guess is `evil owl` is trying to look like a branch, since it`s shading it`s eyes to almost nothing... maybe?

Why must people feel a need to tell everyone it`s a repost? I`ve never seen it before, and if you have, just click past it and move on. Not that big of a deal.

"Evil owl" seemed to be trying to look feline. Birds (even raptors) tend to shy away from most cats by instinct.

Being "too small" to bother with doesn`t seem to work because even huge barn owls will go for a mouse that is only a few inches in length and can easily be swallowed whole.

I`m reminded of Scottish comedian Frankie Boyle... "If I had tae shag an animal, I`d shag an owl. Cause whatever direction you take it from, you`ve always got eye contact".

Davymid ftw...

When he fluffs up, he`s trying to look too big for the other owl to consider him food... In the thinner version, the larger predator doesn`t bother with him because he doesn`t look like something he would normally chase.

The thinner version looks a little cat like to me. Longer thiner face, non-round eyes... the ear tufts.. ect. : /
Trying to look as thin an unappetizing as possible?
Apologies, nature nerd here, but I might be able to help answer that. It`s a Southern White-Faced Owl from southern Africa. When it pulls that v3 trick, it`s trying to look like a non-owl. Some people say a small branch... whatever, it`s trying to look like anything other than an animal so that whatever the big nearby predator is won`t pay any attention. Which is why it looks so frikken weird...
