Has anyone else ever caught this massive hole in Pinocchio storyline?

Saying "my nose will grow" is not a lie, he has no knowledge of the future whether his nose grows or not, so it`s an assumption based on him knowing that he will eventually lie in life causing his nose to grow. NOT a paradox.

He`s made a statement he believes is true. His nose will grow only when he is knowingly telling a lie. All that will be proven is *insert internet brawl inducing statement here*.

For some reason I see his nose coming to life and beating the crap out of the blue fairy

He`s making a prediction, not a statement. So, if hes right, hes just lucky, if hes wrong he`s not lying, he`s just wrong.

So, THERE IS NO PARADOX.

Apparently I`ve learned that trolls can come from Sweden as well...

Nothing about the statement, "My nose will grow," says it won`t grow when he tells the truth. "If A then B" doesn`t necessarily mean "If not A then not B" A common logical fallacy.

But there`s alliteration with this one...
it looks as if he has something growing out his pants
That reminds me of a couple of jokes my father told me as a child. For brevity`s sake, I will only give the punchlines.

1. Tell the truth! Tell a lie! Tell the truth! Tell a lie.

2. Who needs girls? I`ve got sandpaper.

His nose only technically grows under stress, so if he did it calmly enough... It`d be pretty hard keeping him calm, though, knowing that even a hint of worry might rip open a black hole.

"you can`t say "my nose will grow now" will is after now."

Yeah but in that sentence, "now" is after "will", so it works itself out.

Male 9
@Legion5: "my nose grow now will" makes even less sense perhaps "My nose will now grow" instead.

Besides that because lying is tied to intent the paradox is solvable as if he says his nose will grow with the intent that it will not then it will else if he believes his nose will grow it will not.

hope that makes sense....

Because of the use of the word "now", this would be disqualified from paradox status. The word "now" could imply "this instant". Pinnochio`s nose did not grow the instant he told a lie or while he was telling the lie. There was a delay (yes I know its ridiculous to talk about Pinnochio in such a literal sense).

Now if he had said "Because of this statement, my nose will grow", a paradox it would make.

theres no rule saying his nose cant grow when telling the truth, just that it WILL grow when telling a lie, so therefore there is no paradox, his nose would grow

I think pinochio would have to burst into flames in order for this paradox to be solved, because, then Pinochio would be no more, and he would not have told the lie/truth in the first place. or else all of reality will be ripped into millions of pieces which would be fun too!

Lando, how so? if he says, "I am lying", he is telling the truth and therefore his nose won`t grow. just like if he said "I`m telling the truth" and its a lie, his nose will grow

as for the picture, predictions =/= lying. thats like saying that big bang theory is a lie when it just a prediction of how the universe was formed

tldr; a prediction is just an unproven assumption/guess
0
Reply
Male 53
It`s not a paradox because he is stating something that is going to happen, and he believes it will happen. Therefore it`s not lying and there`s no paradox.

From Star Trek:

Kirk: Everything Harry tells you is a lie. Remember that. Everything Harry tells you is a lie.

Harry Mudd: Now listen to this carefully, Norman, I am lying.

Norman: You say you are lying, but if everything you say is a lie, than you are telling the truth.

Smoke starts to come out of Normans head has he goes on babbling about lying and telling the truth, until he just ceases to function.

But it did not start to grow at the moment he said "now". At this point, you are just measuring in smaller units of time. A moment later than when he would say "now" would not be the "now" that he said it would start growing at. Hence, his nose would begin to grow, as it did not grow that very moment he said it would. He had lied.

Or we could all just shut up and enjoy the film.

His nose may be repeatedly growing and shrinking at equilibrium at a frequency too rapid for the human eye, thus appearing to be static. This could be assayed using a strobe with adjustable frequency, or by measuring his nose (it should be slightly longer than when at ground state i.e. in complete absence of lie).

Experimental science, the solution to everything.

I now feel bad for the little fella. This clearly shows that he had a freakish nose-growing disorder. To hide it, he had to cover it up with the whole "it grows when I lie" lie.

The warning to Pinocchio was this his nose would grow if he lied. I don`t recall him being given the assurance that his nose would NOT grow if he told the truth. Maybe the warning "If you lie your nose will grow" is part of a superset of warningings including the warning "Your nose will grow if you attempt to generate a paradox"
0
Reply
Male 421
but "will" is very loose and allows for an infinite amount into the future. Without defining at some point, Pinocchio is essentially saying he will lie eventually, and his nose will grow.

Simply fixed paradox. At the point that he says "now" his nose did not grow because his nose grows after he tells a lie, so his nose will simply grow because he told a lie.
