It`s okay for steampunk to overtake goth, as long as it`s like the steampunk in 2 and 8 and maybe 1 with more attractive people. Those duds are sexy.

steam punk is where they take inspiration from victorian style design with cogs/brass etc

3 is cyber punk, 4/5/6/7 are compounds of goth and cyberpunk.

That being said, steampunk is extremely cool. It really captures some the wonder people must have felt about technology during industrialization. It`s the clash of artisan aesthetics and the dawn of mechanics. How could that not be awesome?!

The first and last are steam punk. I don`t know what the others are, but alas no they are not steam punk.

For a truly great steam punk experience on your TV or computer, look up the show "The Secret Adventures of Jules Verne". They knew how to tell a great story each episode dealing with various types of steam punk devices and dressing the part too.

Loxen... Wearing the parts is just part of the fashion. One doesn`t need to actually adorn oneself with the WORKING mechanism for it the be Steampunk. Its not hypocritical when the people who wear the garb never actually claim that their outfit is functional. I carry a skeleton pocket watch, wear a leather band over my wrist with two VERY old watch gears embedded in it. I have a pair of copper welder goggles that I put regular sunglass lenses in, and I have similar outfits to guy I previously posted. Am I not Steampunk because the gears on my wrist aren`t "functional"? No... The garb is actually designed to pay homage to the dawn of the technological revolution that occurred at the end of the 19th century, the end of the post Victorian era. What you claim is that the adornments aren`t suitable as accessories because they don`t function, whereas they are MEANT to not function because its a tribute to the death and birth of old and new technologies.

The third one was biohaz-goth.
The fourth one was circus-goth.
And then the next three are just your average punk-goth/goth.
I dated a bunch of goth guys in highschool. Really showed me just how many ways one can express how "Daddy didn`t love me."

Also @ outdoorMINER

Tankgirl is NOT steampunk. Tank girl is post apocalypse.
Steam punk pre-dates modern society and is all about the beginning of the technological era, tank girl post-dates modern society in a time of anarchy , ie the end of everything and scraping by with whatever is left over.
BIG difference.
(But you get a gold star anyway for tank girl in your post).

I never heard of steampunk so I just listened to the link from deadpopstar - It reminds me of the brief Dio/Black Sabbath phase I went through in the early `80s. I loved that music then - but our "style" was just rock t-shirts over thermal shirts and levi`s. Anyone who likes this music should dig up some Rush. You would probably love it.

People get so pissed when I mention this, but I`ll try again anyway:
Steampunk fans make no sense for the most part.
By that I mean, steampunk`ers LOVE gears, cogs and whirring mechanical creations. They love steam powered do-dads and marvel at devices created from brass and other metals.
Agreed?
Then why is it, that steampunk`ers insist on adorning themselves head to foot in stuff that does absolutely nothing?
Those gears? They turn nothing, they are GLUED on. Springs are threaded onto necklaces, lacking any springy function.

The majority of the cosplay contraptions are about as technological as a treestump, and consist of a lot of copper spray paint on cardboard.
Its the greatest paradox I know of, such a strange hypocritical following. People who adore intricate strange mechanical marvels, yet are too lazy to actually learn any of the science required to make any of it.
ODD.

I`ve been wearing Steampunk style clothing for years now. I really hope it doesn`t become the next fashion trend because it seem like every time I find something unique, it becomes a fashion trend a year or so later and I have to find something else so I don`t get confused with the trendchasing wannabes. It happened to me as a goth. When I was in HS (over 10 years ago), I was the only goth kid. Now the school is 90% goth and emo kids and they think they`re so original and trendy.

Steam punk is, in fact, a genre.
A subgenre of sci fi, usually dealing with alternate history.
It`s not a look, it`s a type of period piece if anything. Victorian is a look. Victorian is the look commonly associated with steampunk. If you attatch tubes and valves and gears to things needlessly, that isn`t steampunk. That`s just bad design, and demonstrates a lack of imagination.

A few were cyber goths as Avalessa pointed out, a lot were plain goth, and only a couple were steampunk.

It`s been my experience that steampunk`s more adverse to using browns and tans in their costumes. Plus they`re a LOT more modest considering they`re using the Victorian era for clothing inspiration.

Whoever put this list together needs to learn wtf they`re talking about before compiling a list like this.

I don`t have an issue with Goths. I know a couple and they`re very nice people, and they don`t over do it. Not in their normal, every day lives at least.

I can`t stand the people who over do it, though, and live like that from day to day then complain when people think it`s odd.

I`m new to Steampunk, personally I don`t mind it. So long as it`s not over the top. It`s better than looking like a slob, and I saw a lot when I was in town recently.

Personally I`m going for something similar myself, though with jeans, waistcoat, shirt, boot/shoes and hopefully a nice pocket watch I saw and a derby hat. I may buy some items from the Steampunk section on a site I`ve been to recently as well.

Like I said, much better than looking like a slob so long as it`s not over the top. A small piece here and there and you`re set. Nothing wrong with a Victorian suit with some goggles.

I like Steampunk. I have a pair of goggles lying on my entertainment center, for that matter. I only wear them to a few events, but I like them.

This post, however, was VERY lacking in Steampunk, though it was replaced by goth (which is okay, I guess...). I`m disappointed in you, Fancy. Learn your subcultures.

"In a way, isn`t steampunk a subcategory of goth? They`re both victorian influenced."

That is like saying hip hop is a subcategory of rock because they are both influenced by jazz.

As Scott Adams` once said, "Anything that can be predicted will be prevented." Now, I hope that doesnt happen to this, but I sure as hell wished we predicted werewolves..and emo..and vampires.

Cuz steampunk is fourthousand times more awesome that those.

First: most of these pictures are not steampunk.

Second: agreed, the whole steampunk aesthetic can easily be ruined by people overdoing it, and doing it wrong. Covering something in cogs and gears does not automatically make it steampunk.

"frankly i think #5 is COMPLETELY inappropriate for a public place. There`s a little girl in the background who doesn`t need to be seeing that.

if you want to dress like that, fine, whatever floats your boat. but be mature and classy about it--go where there aren`t many young kids."

yeah but see how this works? the little kid is being held up facing the other way by the dad, who is now free to watch her sexy ass walk on by, everyones happy! :D

Most of that WAS goth fashion, a lot from goth festivals like Wave Gotik Treffen or M`era Luna.
Only a few of those have a touch of steam punk.

I like the last guy`s get up. But, sadly, he`s going to be hit by a car owing to the fact that he can`t see where he`s going. Oh well, at least he`ll look rather stylish as he writhes in agony on the street...
