Hmm... It COULD work but a magnet large enough to move such a heavy object would have to either be HUGE or an electromagnet which means the car would need to produce massive amounts of electricity.

Lol. It`s funny but obviously not going to work. The magnet will be pulled toward the metal and therefore pull the cart it`s attached to backwards as well as forward.

What could work, however, is if the magnet was not attached to the vehicle, and the car would be propelled in a slingshot-like fashion toward its destination.

"put one of those on a perfect straightaway all the way around the world....If it never stopped accelerating he`d hit light speed eventually"

actually the faster you go, the more weight you have. so the closer you get to the speed of light, the energy needed to force all that weight to go that fast is just not there. according to E=MC2, its basically impossible for any massive object to travel the speed of light. fotons can travel light speed because they have no mass.

I`m pretty sure it wouldn`t work because the magnet is in one place.. if it was constantly moving or you had a series of magnets repelling the metal then it would work. But, otherwise it would be doomed to failure.

would that actually work or..? I mean Im not a physics major here.

You don`t need to be. You don`t need any knowledge of physics at all, let alone degree level.

Even if you completely lack any knowledge of any aspect of science and don`t want to learn any of it, you can still be sure this won`t work:

    i) Social. Magnetism has been known for millenia. More recently, it has been extremely common knowledge in numerous societies with a large degree of freedom. It is therefore ridiculous to think that no-one would be using this if it worked.

ii) Experimental. Fridge magnet, bit of thread, toy car, etc. You can easily verify it doesn`t work that way.

You don`t even need junior school physics, let alone degree level physics.

Already used for experimental weapons IRL and in sci-fi. Rail guns work that way. There are many technical issues that make engines and roads much more efficient for vehicles, but you`re right that it would work.

Isn`t it amazing how the Secret Conspiracy So Secret No-one Knows Its Name can so utterly suppress knowledge of alternative power technologies but random people online can speak freely about them?

It took the power of a god to ensure no-one believed Cassandra when she told the truth, and that was just to anyone within hearing distance. This conspiracy can do it to thousands of people who can "speak" across the whole world with the internet! Wow, they are far more powerful than a god!

You know, I`m not convinced about that.

What a drattard, a bigger magnet would just mean the arm snaps and they come together, equal and opposite forces would cancel, no `free energy`.

does anyone on this site know anything about basic physics? The only way to create energy is to destroy mass, hence how we get nuclear power.

Decor "does anyone on this site know anything about basic physics? The only way to create energy is to destroy mass, hence how we get nuclear power."

Matter cannot be created or destroyed.

It`s kinda one of the most basic laws of physics.

Mass cannot be created or destroyed, but it can be converted to energy, which is what I believe Decor meant when he mentioned nuclear power. A grammar error, then, not a physics one, simply bad word choice. Although in a place like I-A-B, a grammar error might draw more contempt.

Understand physics better before talking about it.
Acting like you not what you are talking about when you really don`t is ill-advised, particularly in a public forum.
Even without understanding the more intricate details, you should be familiar with one of the other classic statements of physics: E=MC^2
Matter and energy are interchangeable, and you can convert one into the other. Now shush.

    @Angilion
Actually, he`s right, an electromagnet next to wheels could be used to make them spin, and in fact, that`s how electric motors work.
But you still have to run the current to power the electromagnet, so no free energy.

I bet at least 12% of these people who see this will actually think it`s possible.

We live in a retarded society.

    ---

Oh, it`s entirely possible. Notice that he`s going down a hill?

Just push your metal cart with a magnet attached to it down a hill, and WOW! look at it go.

Was going to leave it at this, but I can`t resist butting in :)

"Actually there is some truth to this. What if the magnet was an insanely-powerful electromagnet?"

If it was an insanely powerful electromagnet, guess what it needs to be insanely magnetic? That`s right... large amounts of electricity. And due to the 2nd law of thermodynamics we can`t take make this conversion without losses. So you`d have to put more energy in than you get out at the end.

Perpetual Motion machine designs have been around for centuries. Most of them appear at least possibly feasible until you take into account the one thing most people never think about - friction.

To create a real Perpetual Motion machine, you have to have NO LOSS in the system at all, or else it won`t keep going forever. If you create light, or move something, or lift something, or use any form of the energy for anything else other than powering itself, then it can`t work. And since heat and friction are impossible to eliminate in most cases, its impossible.

Damn you, thermodynamics! *joins Aquaeous in shaking fist*
Perpetual motion = impossible. Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only converted from one form to another. Usually unwanted energy.

Consider a light bulb: desired energy = light. Wasted energy = heat.
An electric heater: desired energy = heat. Wasted energy = light. However a lot of the heat is also lost.

Most of the time heat is the lost energy, particularly with movement (friction).

And this car wouldn`t move unless it was on a hill or someone was pushing it. Or if it had a tailwind, which I suppose would count as being pushed.

    @Inteluhgint and Aquaeus

While Entropy makes perpetual motion impossible in this particular case the failure is not entropy but Newton`s second and third law. Assuming the object is rigid, the force acts only on the center of gravity. Plus there is no external force. Also perpetual motion machines have been designed without friction playing a real role. Many must fail at least due to compression. Also Diego mass can be converted into energy (E=gamma m c^2 in standard notation). In fact any time anything gains energy it gains mass.

Also if the magnet was at a fixed point the car would simply oscillate around it. Another correction photons have a 0 rest mass and thus zero mass. They do however have a momentum vector. It is true as well that it takes more and more energy to approach the speed of light. E=c^2m/(1-v^2/c^2)

    1. Hit something really big
    or
    2. Push a button which makes the pole holding the magnet retract THEN hit something somewhat big.
