The international appeal of soccer is the result European colonialism.

Other countries came later, but it started because of colonialism.

Squircifer: "is it me, or does no one really give a rats ass about football, save FOUR-ONcE every four years?"

It`s you."

And me actually. I am proud of our great heritage of being absolutely useless at everything we ever invented though. This and of course because we have managed to become probably the second most hated nation on earth for various reasons, most of which we are still unaccountably happy about :) and even the first most hated nation hates us. So all the referees and linesmen hate us and that is a really big advantage to being useless at sport. How the Germans got away with being the third most hated nation on earth evades me, you don`t see the Krauts being slagged off on these forums. We are good at motorsport though, but only because the Merkins haven`t figured out how to make cars properly or tracks that bend both way yet.

The referee was like 40 yards from the goal line when the ball went about a foot over the line for a split second ... he can`t give a goal if he doesn`t see it. Anyway, Germany absolutely trounced England, 4-1 was flattering, it was embarrassing to watch. Heres a link for all you bitchy little English hypocrits :)England "goal"

First of all, for all AMERICANS who hate England football team, I am glad that the U.S. team lost just so they get a chance to go home and practice what you guys do best, "dancing with the stars" or "Gridiron". It was a poor call and the game will be a much different game if England`s 2nd goal was allowed. Face it, you hate England just because we are GOOD in real FOOTBALL (Yes, the game where you kick the ball with your foot and not use your hand all the time). Do yourselves a favor... before you complain about ENGLAND football team, get your terminology correct.

It`s a shame so many people are whining about the whole 4-2/4-1. Yes, it was a poor call, but so was Wembley 66, and all of a sudden NOW it`s an outrage that there`s no instant replay? England had their moments but let`s face it, they were far, far inferior to Germany, who finally played a match like they could and should.
Why doesn`t soccer have instant replay and a scoreboard time clock that everyone can see (instead of a secret stopwatch in one officials pocket that no one knows when the half or game exactly ends, or when time is really running or stopped).
We don`t have instant replays because football is all about free flow of play. You just need to look at the advantage rule to see that. It doesn`t stop anywhere near as often as other games, so instant replays would slow and interrupt the game. I am not against the introduction of goal-line tech, but I would be against full replays.

Regarding the timing, it`s very simple rules - the clock does not stop, ever. It counts upwards to 90 minutes. When the 90 minutes are almost over, the referee announces (via the 4th official) how many minutes will be added due to lost time during the game (called "injury time"). So everyone does, in fact, know how much time is left.

"why doesn`t soccer have instant replay" well if they did it would take away the part of the game where people get away with cheating or get to roll around on the floor like a great big girl for 10 minutes. I play rugby hence the comment.

"Why doesn`t soccer have instant replay"

Because unlike American `football`, soccer does not stop and start every five seconds.

The fact that the game is still playing while they show replays means there is a possibility that the fans will miss something happening now while watching something that happened a minute ago.

Your point about having a visible clock i can`t really see anything wrong with although tickets to soccer games over here are expensive enough without having to add extra for the installation and maintenance of a giant electrical score board

I understand when soccer was invented back in blahblah year that instant replay and giant time clocks controlled by a time keeping official didn`t exist but it`s really time to modernize. Drat.

"I frankly don`t care what the ref says the ref was wrong. We have video evidence to prove it and final proof for why FIFA should finally institute a video refereeing system. It was 4 bloody 2!"

you can argue that it changed the whole complexion of the game, it would have been way different if the score was 2-2 as supposed to 3-1

Well, I saw the game, and I saw Lampard tie the game at 2-2, and I saw the ball bounce inside the goal, but the referee did not award the goal, and the rest of the game could never be the same after that. Who knows what would have happened if England had tied the score?

Angilion, even at first glance I would call 4-1 a slaughtering! You can`t put it any other way. Even had the score been 4-2 Germany, still woulda been a slaughtering. And that`s before you even look at the game play.

Sorry but England were abysmal for 6o-70 minutes of that game.

@wtfstfu,

Most sports teams have a psychological advantage if they know they are ahead in a game. So if we level 2-2 we`d be more likely to strive to win. However, when the decision was given against us, the team felt as if it was impossible to get the 2 extra goals to win the game and therefore played badly.

I`m not bitter that the Germans beat us, they definitely deserved to win. They were the better team. However, the decision made to not give England the goal would have had a huge impact on moral and determination of the players.

Soccer gets respect when players stop faking injuries. When a country fakes an injury or foul to get an 11 meter kick, and then wins the game by 1 point, how can anyone even be proud, and not ashamed? I would rather lose than win like a p*ssssay. Not that the England Germany game had any of that (I didn`t watch it so maybe it did or not?)

You don`t speak for all people of the USA.

Most sports can look childish to people who don`t understand them. Rounders? A game for schoolgirls. Throwing balls into hoops? A few minutes of fun at a fairground. Wearing yards of padding, running into each other and stopping the game every 20 seconds? Obviously very silly.

As for national pride...the USA is noted for national pride in sports in which it doesn`t compete against other nations. As you would say, meh.

Angilion, seeing as my joke about staying in the tournament a day longer than the USA has met with universal contempt, I may as well go the whole hog:
The stats show nothing of the game. Germany cut the midfield and back four apart every single venture into the English half. Upson, apart from scoring, had a shocker. Gerrard was poor. There was no coherence or plan to the English game at all. It was like they turned up expecting to play a different sport. Every senior England player apart from David James failed to step up to the mark. To argue that point is as futile as me expecting anyone to get my (plainly) crap joke.

I disagree with the extent of your claims.

I think Germany are a better team and did play a better game, but I think the gap is not as great as you say it is.

I also think that the wrongly disallowed goal had some effect on how the teams played the reat of the game, not none at all.

I think England would have lost anyway. I`m irritated at the widespread eagerness to exaggerate how badly they did. Slaughter, massacre, killing...no. Wrong.

We did play crap. But I think that our attitude would have changed and things would have gone differently had the ref not been a goddamned moron.

Angilion even after the goal was disallowed England were slightly better then the Germans, until about 10 minutes after half time. After about 55-60 minutes England were indeed slaughtered. Even at the start of the match Germany were killing them. England were only decent in the match for about 20 minutes.

The official score was 4-1, even though a perfectly good goal was disallowed. But would a 4-2 score to Germany have changed who won? No because at the end of the day Germany are good and the England team are not. Just look at the group stages.

Yes. The person you`re replying to is, to be polite, wrong.

Although it would have been more irritating if the USA had beaten Ghana, because then other fools would have proclaimed that the USA team was obviously better than the England team (not understanding the difference between playing one of the best teams in the world and playing Ghana).
Note: it was 4-1, not 4-2?

It was 4-1 I-A-B...
That`s a large part of the problem (and part of the reason for the subtitle on the `Fancyclad`s C: pictures` thread).

England scored a second goal to draw level 2-2. The ball was 2-3 feet behind the goal line, confirmed by the cameras which point straight along the line. The ref decided that the ball hadn`t gone past the line, i.e. the ref was obviously and provably wrong.

Up until that point, England had possession most of the time (FIFA website has continuous monitoring of possession) and were on a par with Germany. After that bullpoo decision, they were demoralised and faded away. Had the ref not been utterly and provably wrong, the entire match could have gone differently.

Anyone who says the game was a massacre and suchlike obviously didn`t watch any of it and is just going on the score.
