For all of you comparing this to the Tacoma Narrows Bridge collapse. Look up aeroelastic fluttering.

resonance.

it`s not big waves, it`s resonance, like pushing a swing at the right time.

The Tacoma Narrows did that before it was cool! Quit posing Russia!

I was going to call bs on this, because it looks very faked, but there are several other videos of it on youtube.

The shaking road is not unreasonable (somebody forgot to check resonances!), but at :15, the extreme degree to which the concrete is expanding and contracting... I dunno, I`m feeling kinda skeptical about this one. I won`t deny it outright, but something seems off.

Mythbusters did a whole episode on this sort of thing. It is definitly real.

Yeah, this has destroyed a bridge or two before and always has terrified me. I`m afraid to go over bridges ><

Thank you Lionhart! I live about 5 miles from the new narrows, and Gertie (the old bridge) was FAR worse than this one. :D

They`re also supposed to have Orwellian undertones.

normal vibration modes FTW!

Wind creates a harmonic resonance over and under the bridge causing that to happen. If it gets too bad, the bridge goes down. I think over here in America, on long span bridges they put angled sheets of metal on the sides of the bridge that act like an airfoil to prevent that resonance from happening.

That is a pretty badly designed bridge, but I have seen worse.

There IS NO Soviet Russia. The Soviet Union disbanded years ago. Wake up and smell the real world, people.

Fake. Real bridges don`t make a creaky-creak sound. When a real bridge warps and flexes, it`s more of a krrkidirkreeeerdk sound.

It`s the Russian Galloping Gertie! Too bad, they could have learned from our mistakes on this one.

"how does the pavement not crack? last I checked, asphalt doesn`t have very good elastic properties.. "

Asphalt and concrete are both flexible....ever seen it melt in the sun? Its kinda like that

No this is definatly a real bridge. I think that they used to have one in the states, but it got taken down or fell. Its unsafe for sure though

This seems almost unreal. Not calling `fake`, though. I just imagine a lot more rumbling and the concrete breaking or something. A bridge couldn`t be this flexible and not collapse, could it?

Yeah Joolin, that`s probably an old bridge... I think that the Tacoma Narrows was one of those things that the engineering community around the world learned from. That or Russia just thought they could make it work because they`re Russia.

If you knew the length of the bridge you could probably guestimate the resonant frequency, didn`t look too high based on the wavelength.

This is the same thing that happened to the Tacoma Narrows bridge many years ago. It is real. What happens is that when the howling of the wind hits the resonant frequency of the bridge, it causes the bridge to resonate out of control and wave around like that. It doesn`t even have to be a strong wind. Because of that, most bridges now are engineered with acoustics taken into account. Apparently nobody told Russia.

It`s real. Design flaw, probably means it`s about to collapse. Didn`t you notice the siren, or the stopped traffic, or that nobody was on the bridge? Tacoma Narrows Bridge

This is real, apparently.

Go, unreal reality!

Youtube searches turn up different videos of it, some being news shots, some hand-held-camera shots. Either way, it seems to be real.

I want to go see it, now. It looks so cool haha.

no one can make me believe that is real. i mean NO ONE! Russia doesn`t make a bridge like that, Russia is big country!

Guys, When they show a clip of the left side of the bridge look at the beam that runs the length of the bridge. Watch how it smooshes together and the goes back to way its supposed to be. This is a Hoax. The metal would have been torn to shreds had it really happened.

So is this just a shot of a bridge with some bad editing and some creaking sounds thrown on there or..?

Male 299
@Reaper171: that`s actually exactly why it is happening, near-perfect oscillation by the wind.

@Pui: most things the you assume are solid (actually all of them) are actually liquids. But it is easier to understand what`s going on by assuming everything has elastic proprieties on some degree.

The oscillation simply pushes the bend to the limit

For those of you that think this is fake or wonder what causes this - search for "Tacoma Narrows Bridge." It literally shook itself to pieces. Bad engineers aren`t limited to Russia.
