That`s more of an elongated helicopter pad than a runway. I`ve seen bigger cul-de-sacs for half a dozen houses.

I just checked - this runway is only ~200 feet longer than the ones on the big USA aircraft carriers, and that`s measuring from cliff to cliff (there`s a 200 feet drop at both ends).

I don`t think the big jets would land there just the small ones

According to the travel guide I looked at, the runway is by default closed to all planes and a special permit is required to land there. Those permits are only issued for a handful of small planes noted for requiring a short runway, none of which are jets.

"I just checked - this runway is only ~200 feet longer than the ones on the big USA aircraft carriers, and that`s measuring from cliff to cliff (there`s a 200 feet drop at both ends)"

aircraft carriers have a cable running across for the tailhook of anything landing on it to get caught on to stop the plane instantly. sure aircraft carriers are short but length counts for nothing when you can stop instantly

this runway though longer doesnt have that thus any pilot needs to come in exactly at the right speed and angle and to know when to release the throttle and apply the brakes

kudos to anyone who can land here :P

meh.. all they`d need to do in put in some arresting gear, like on aircraft carriers. Of course the planes would also need to be equipped with the hooks..

"meh.. all they`d need to do in put in some arresting gear, like on aircraft carriers. Of course the planes would also need to be equipped with the hooks"

arresting gear works for jets on a short runway because if they miss they have he power to quickly accelerate afterwards but normal singleprop/doubleprop aircraft dont have that instant thrust.

if that runway had cables and the planes had hooks, the would only have 1 shot or they`de be in the drink :P

The point isn`t whether you can land there with arrestor cables etc. Those are military planes. This is the world`s shortest COMMERCIAL-SERVICED runway. They not only land there, they run a regular passenger flight service.

I thought that was obvious enough to not need explaining - it`s the reason why the fact that this runway is only a little longer is remarkable.

There`s a 20-seater plane (DHC-6 Twin Otter) that`s cleared to land there. It was designed to have a relatively low safe flying speed, so it requires relatively little space for take off and landing.

Its not really the size of the runway that matters... its how you use the runway that counts.

meh, this plane could land in my driveway - and then takeoff. But a tailhook scenario COULD work. Yes, jets do have JETS to help take off again if they miss the tailhook, but if this plane came in for a landing at a much faster speed, and missed the tailhook, it could probably get airborne again.

It`s a small plane. It`s not a jet. It does not need a very large run way. The runway at our country airport is not much longer then this (and most of the time they land on the dirt strip anyway, weather permitting)

No, I don`t fly planes myself. I`ve had some lessons for poos and giggles though.

    Saba runway... 1300 ft

minimum required distance to land a cessna 172 at sea level over a 50ft obstacle = 1500 ft. With no obstacles distance required = 500 ft. That`s still drating tight considering that plane wasn`t stopped by the end.

Yes, put the landing strip ACROSS the peninsula, not down it vertically!
