why am I atheist? There`s too many religions to believe in, and I don`t know who is wrong, really though it`s hard being an atheist, since many of my friends aren`t, and most of my family doesn`t know, but if one of the many religions is true, should I be punished?

"mice DNA is more similar to humans than human DNA" wow, just wow...Is this pro christianity or a spoof on christianity hating antitheism?

And people need to learn the difference between atheism and antitheism.

And of course, no laws would exist without christianity.....

Good job your father doesn`t know the bible, then, because it doesn`t forbid killing. In fact, it requires killing. Over and over again.

`thou shalt not kill` is a mistranslation.

My nut-job fundie father has said things stupidly similar to this bullsh-t.

Hell, he`s directly said "He should be glad the bible says `thou shalt not kill` because otherwise he would be in trouble."

That`s ever so nice of you. I could say that I`m sorry you still feel the need to believe in an imaginary friend...who will torture you forever if you don`t obey then enthusiastically enough. But I probably wouldn`t talk down to you in that way.
Faith is trust and confidence,
Without foundation. If you have evidence, you don`t need faith. Right now, for example, I am not worrying about electricity arcing out of my keyboard and killing me. Not because I have faith that it won`t but because I have sufficient evidence to judge it impossible.
and in no way does having faith preclude one from admitting what they do not know.
"God did it" fills in all the gaps in knowledge and it was and is used that way, for various values of god.
"jesus smoked olives which had an effect like the same as pot, he let a hooker wash his feet."

Wish I`d had this as verbal ammunition when I was twelve.
It`s dubious at best. Smoking olives? What? Also, which hooker is being referred to? If it`s Mary of Magdala, then it`s probably just libel.

However, a case can be made for Jesus using cannabis. A recipe for anointing oil from the bible contains rather a lot of
kaneh bosm
(transliterated Hebrew), a plant that might well have been cannabis. Cannabis was available in the area and it was used in herbal medicine. It is topically active (i.e. an oil containing cannabis will get you high through your skin).

I just picked the first half a dozen local examples that popped into my head. I could probably get past 50 without going outside Britain and Europe and without looking any up. There are thousands. I could probably get over 100 from Britain alone if I looked them up, and that`s just the ones we still know about. No doubt many more have been forgotten, given how rare writing was in pre-Roman Britain and how thoroughly Christianity suppressed every other religion here.
To say that a theist scientist becomes an atheist to pursue a scientific answer, well...that is your opinion because personally you cannot reconcile the two, due to your own beliefs.
Since I didn`t say that, how can be be my opinion? You wrote it, not me.

Do you think that religious faith affects the results of experiments in a way that would not occur if the experiments were carried out by atheists? Say, for example, the forthcoming experiments at the LHC. Will Higgs bosons appear for Christians but not atheists? Hindus? Muslims? etc. Will the equipment only work if the right prayers or rituals are used?

A theist doesn`t have to become an atheist to pursue a scientific answer, but their theism is irrelevant to it. They can ignore the answer or fit it into their theism as they please, but science won`t give them that kind of `why` and religion won`t give them that kind of `how`.

@Brassbull Do you even read what you or others are typing or do you sit in your e-tower spouting off utter-horse poo trying to get recognition from strangers?

Yeah, there are extremists that take religion entirely too far, but that goes with any sort of topic that is viewed so passionately about. Who cares, its going to happen no matter how much you or I complain about it.

The fact remains that there are people on both sides of the fence that try to act as if they are better and those who do not share their views are below them.

Definition of fad: "A phenomenon that becomes popular for a very short time" from here . So I suppose openly declaring your beliefs toward no deity was the norm five years ago any time Christianity was involved.

Cont`d @Angie

Mutually exclusive means that two things can not exist at the same time. In no way does the statement "My faith is why, and science is how" illustrate that. Why, who, when, where, what are all things that exist together, while offering varying descriptions of one item, in this case being my belief in something more than chance.

You state in your referred to post that "Science and religion are innately mutually exclusive" and then continue by saying there are "Theist Scientists" who cannot "wear both hats at the same time."

To say that a theist scientist becomes an atheist to pursue a scientific answer, well...that is your opinion because personally you cannot reconcile the two, due to your own beliefs. That does not mean that they are the same as you, just because you both pursue science.

People with faith, and confidence, are not threatened by science, which again goes back to the problem bein

@Angillion

Yes, that sentence was redundant, in fact done on purpose to lead on to the next statement while illustrating my point. I`m sure I could have structured it a little better, but I`m not looking for a grade.
Faith however has far more connotations than just religion, and I am sorry if you do not have faith in your friends, partners, politics, or religious views. Faith is trust and confidence, and in no way does having faith preclude one from admitting what they do not know. I am well aware that there is more in this universe that I don`t know than I do, and it doesn`t impede my ego or my faith in the slightest.
In none of my posts have I tried to convert anyone, and I have stayed relatively neutral while still stating my opinions. Unfortunately, this is bleeding in to two posts, but I have just one more point to make.

Pui, good points you make there. Where I live (Texas) you most certainly will not find any social benefits from being an atheist. I can definitely see how that would be considered a fad though, and it is sad if someone does that in a forum, when the most benefit they`d get from it is someone agreeing with a comment they made.

What we don`t know is whether this is a fad or a trend. If people change their beliefs permanently, it would be the latter.

I can`t believe I said "their" instead of "they`re." I suck at editing!

I think social pressure is enough to make some people convert, and I would say they converted because it`s "cool", not because they genuinely had a change of heart. They just wanted to fit in. It`s the same way it is in areas that are prodomidately christian. People go to church just to be "normal". In both cases there has to be some people who are only just following along to avoid being an outcast, not because they actually thought it through and decided for themselves what they believe.

My boyfriend in high school, while still genuinely believing in God and going to church, always pretended he was atheist at school because it was "cool". I`ve seen at least a few cases of that. Not saying that all atheists are just trying to be cool, only that I think (at least in my area) it`s the favorable thing to be. In high school people publically bashed religion and belittled and bullied those who subscribed to one, so quite a few christians did hide their faith and even bashed their own religion along with them in order to fit in. For the sake of just blending into society, there is a lot of pressure not to be christian where I live. Even 6 years past high school and as a person who doesn`t care much what people think I`ve learned to just keep my mouth shut about my religion, because I am sick and tired of people trying to convert ME.

Feel free to find some proof that it is considered "cool" now to be an atheist. Saying that someone subscribes to a certain belief just because it is cool, and not because they genuinely hold those beliefs to be valid, is indeed discrediting their beliefs.

If I post a comment in a forum and someone chooses to read it, I am not forcing my opinion down their throat. Since their reading it is voluntary, the word "force" no longer applies. What I am referring to is situations in the real world. Atheists, Hindus, Buddhists, etc., do not come to my home, my place of work, or find me on the street to preach to me about burning in hell if I don`t follow their beliefs.
People who are willing to hold their beliefs despite evidence to the contrary, whether they be theists or atheists, are the ones you have to worry about.
If there is ever evidence that deities exist, your statement will become relevant. It isn`t now, obviously.

Theists are extremely close to being atheists of exactly the type that some people are complaining about. There are thousands of deities that a theist cannot prove the non-existence of but is absolutely sure don`t exist. I could name dozens off the top of my head just from religions local to me. Odin, Epona, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Tyr, Boudigga, Juno...the list goes on and on.

So most atheists are less extreme atheists than any theist.

That`s a tautology, not an opinion. By choosing...you are making a choice. Meaningless.
I personally hope that you have faith in anything you decide, whether you support it with gut or you support it with math.
I`ve had plenty of people try to convert me to faith. They haven`t succeeded. You won`t either. I think it`s silly and I don`t need it. I can admit when I don`t know.
I myself have reconciled the two. My faith is why, and science tells me how it`s done.
Which are two seperate things, i.e. exclusive of each other. I explained my position my post in Tuesday, June 01, 2010 3:26:46 PM. I even wrote "There are theist scientists." You`re saying the same thing and also saying you disagree with it.

Also, even if it was a Christian person who said this, not every Christian thinks evolution means we evolved from monkeys. If there was a video with people like this saying "i think black people brains iz smaller den penutz" and it came from a predominantly white forum, would you want someone to think all white people are like that?

There are a lot of people that seem to mind the "flamewars" that occur whenever religion comes up in a post. I personally don`t think that this is a flamewar at all. The majority of the comments have something intelligent to contribute. Two people disagreeing with each other does not constitute a flamewar.

Anyway, I agree with the few here that have said that any kind of extremism is where the problems arise. People who are willing to hold their beliefs despite evidence to the contrary, whether they be theists or atheists, are the ones you have to worry about. The people who wrote the comments used in this clip are ignorant, and probably to the extent that they would rather remain ignorant than learn anything that might contradict their beliefs.

By the way, this video is far more than satire. It was made using quotes from various Christian debate forums. They just acted out what Christians had typed. That makes it ten times scarier than, say, a parody. I agree with Arandanos about Christians having been some of the best people I`ve known, But when it came down to brass tacks, I had to disown my Christian family for my own mental health and well being. Christianity can be very dangerous for those who "CAN NOT" play along. I hope (Inevitably in vain, to be sure,) to see the death of it in my lifetime. I wish it could be replaced by a system that actually cares about the humanity of its members.

Empirical Evidence remember?

He`s not discrediting your views by calling them a fad, he`s saying it has become a fad. "Look at me I`m an Atheist, I`m cool".

It has. The upjump in 13-17 year old atheists is not because of the sudden surge in the popularity of philosophy in that demographic. Sorry.

The propensity for Atheists to evangelize (and Mac/PC debates) demonstrate that the "shoving your beliefs down others throats" is not religious in nature. It is human.

I`m glad you liked it, it wasn`t meant to be disrespectful! I agree with you that fundamental religion is a problem, but I lump that into the same category with extremism. Extremism in any form, whether religious, nationalist, or any other type of prejudice does not allow for tolerance, and must be fought at all costs. That was the main point that I was stating, always fight intolerance.
@Angillion Agree to disagree, I am a man of great faith in people, but my view on religion could not be contained in this small box. In my opinion, by choosing whether or not to believe in a religion (whether based on evidence or lack thereof), you are making a choice. I personally hope that you have faith in anything you decide, whether you support it with gut or you support it with math.

I think way to many people are thinking atheism but meaning nihilism, agnosticism, ect... there are just as many kinds of belief systems based on lack of deities as there are sects of monotheism. This shouldn`t be an argument. Everyone should mind their own souls, spirits, lives or whatever they believe in, pass them on to their children and let everyone else live in ignorance because clearly they are right. Believe in what you want, just don`t push it on others. And if it is part of your system to convert others (I`m looking at you witnesses -.-) then you`re just an non-nice individual and everyone will always hate you and you are probably used to that. Also...it is satire of stupid people, no matter what you believe stupid people are funny...laugh at them it will make you feel better about yourself.

I realize this is sort of a parody video, and I think it is tremendously sad that people think these things. I think it`s GOOD to argue about religion, to an extent, because it MIGHT help some people understand what atheism is about.

More and more people are becoming atheist, and more people are fearful of atheists than are of Muslims.

Theists tend to think that there is some kind of organization or creed behind atheism, and that their lives would have no direction or purpose if they did not have a Bible.

Funny when so honestly phrased, but that is what many theists believe.

No doubt many people will think I`m being unfair, but I can support my statement.

Many theists argue that morality comes from their religion. Some of them acknowledge morality from other religions too, but morality is always an aspect of religion to them.

They are therefore arguing that without their religion they would have no morality at all, i.e. that they would steal, beat, kill, etc, without a care in the world if and when it was convenient for them to do so.

The stated limit is wrong because additional characters are added after the message is sent. Sucks, but we`re stuck with it.
"Science and religion shouldn`t have to be mutually exclusive."
I say that are innately mutually exclusive. Science is about evidence and trying to explain things, religion is about lack of evidence and trying to not have anything explained.

It`s possible for both to co-exist as long as they are kept completely seperate, but that`s a tall order in the real world. It can be done. There are theist scientists. It`s even possible for theists in some religions to regard science as holy work, but they have to put religion aside when they work as scientists. You can swap "hats", but you can`t wear them both at the same time.
Reganomnomnom, the irony that Jamie was pointing out is that the belief of non-belief in itself requires faith. Instead of faith in a God, you have faith that you are right. No one has any proof for or against, so it all boils down to faith in what you believe to be right.
That argument is superficially plausible, but untrue for this reason: Lack of belief in something is not an act of faith.

You`re mistaking a lack of faith for faith, a common but clearly rather odd anti-atheism argument.

You are equating two very different things:

i) Belief in something for the sake of it, without evidence.

ii) Inability to disprove an unsubtantiated and deliberately non-falsifiable hypothesis. Of course it can`t be disproved - it`s deliberately made that way.

Do you have faith in everything anyone tells you? If not, why not? Answer that question and you`ll understand atheism better.

No lUnderground, you`re wrong because shappy is NOT wrong about anything in that post. If you disagree, then what is shappy wrong about?

@Molehouse don`t worry not your fault, being religious have nothing to do with the crap we have see in this video, they are just a bunch of puppet in the hand of some organization. Religious feeling is very distant from what they say.

"After wading through your nonsensical comment, I`d like to say this. Stupid Atheists aren`t actually atheists. Would you call some retard who doesnt know about religion a Christian if he said he believed in god? Probably not, and if you did, it would be for your own self-righteous reasons.

I guess what I`m trying to say is, ACTUAL atheists are usually very cognitive people and have come to their own conclusion based on solid facts. Thanks."

Congratulations on your No True Scotsman Fallacy. You just proved that there are stupid atheists, you drat. Atheism is nothing but the lack of belief in a god. Raeleans and some Buddhists are atheists, but they are still religious and are just as likely to make other supernatural claims. Atheism doesn`t cause you to be more intelligent, reason and logical thinking just sometimes leads to atheism.

Yeah I laugh at how many people are not getting that this is a sarcastic video, aimed at the fundamentalists that preach these things online (as it said at the end of the video), and its trying to put into context how ridiculous these arguments are. The sad thing is some people are actually retarded enough to write these comments on websites in a vain attempt to justify their own beliefs against the torrents of evidence that states to the contrary.

@ T-Marley

Firstly... Thank you =] I like the addition to my name!

Science and belief aren`t mutually exclusive, but for a large part religion is incompatible with science. Well the fundamentalist religion is. A large amount of science contradicts fundamental religion beliefs. I for one, as a scientist, know many friends who believe in a God of some sort and i agree with them. It`s religion that i don`t understand, or at least i haven`t found one that i can accept.

Just want to re-iterate that i think the fundamental religion i.e. that the earth is only 6000 years old. Those parts are contradicted by science.

ElSombrero: They are just quoting from other people. It is meant as a joke.

Faith is belief that is not based on proof. Evidence is information which tends to determine or demonstrate the truth of a proposition: proof. There is plenty of evidence (proof) for the theory of evolution. Therefor, evolution requires no faith.

@T-Marley "the irony that Jamie was pointing out is that the belief of non-belief in itself requires faith."

Incorrect, claiming god does not exist requires faith but simply disbelieving the claim that he does exist doesn`t require faith at all. The basic atheistic position is simply believing that the claims that god exists are without merit. For example, I could easily say "I don`t believe fairies exist" but it would not be the same as saying "I know fairies don`t exist". Get it?

" we can`t prove each other wrong..." "...So, what`s the point? "

Because if the atheists are right then what we do on Earth and how we treat each other is important, not what happens after death. The only time I have EVER experienced atheists with their panties in a bunch is when science, progress and reason get curtailed in favor of a religion.

Okay, as a Roman Catholic, let me say something:

These people... are idiots.

Though they did make me laugh. They made me chuckle warmly.

I wonder, are they Westborough Baptist? They sound like it.

Personally, I don`t care what people are. As long as they`re not annoying.

And I believe some force, scientific or otherwise, created the universe. A few billion years ago. Wherever this 6000 years ago is coming from... I don`t know.

Does christians have more than one faith, because the don`t believe that the other religions are true? That requires faith doesn`t it?

Reganomnomnom, the irony that Jamie was pointing out is that the belief of non-belief in itself requires faith. Instead of faith in a God, you have faith that you are right. No one has any proof for or against, so it all boils down to faith in what you believe to be right. So, indeed there is irony.

What I find horrible is the intolerance that lies on all sides of the debate. The majority of Atheist I have met are so staunch in their beliefs that they constantly harp on anyone with a religious slant as an idiot. The majority of people with religious beliefs that I have met are certain that everyone who doesn`t believe as they do is destined to hell.

Guess what, we can`t prove each other wrong until we are dead (or the sky opens up with a booming voice). The atheists...well, they won`t have anything at all to say if they are right, and the religious will just watch them burn if they are right. So, what`s the point?

Science and religion shouldn`t have to
