And that means what? There is nothing in FCC regulations about the placement of cell phone antennas. Need proof? Look at a satellite phone. Where is the antenna on those? Oh yeah, the TOP. Same in most smart phone. The fact is, cell phone antennas are not powerful enough to penetrate skin. That`s why there is no proof using a cell phone gives you cancer. Stop believing every email your mom sends you.

People who have the newest iPhone, iPhone4, can`t hold it in their left hand. The antenna is on the lower left side and if you hold it there you lose most of your signal. Super mega epic fail for Apple.

@Deviros "The HSUPA/GSM/CDMA/[insert your network tech] unibody phone almost ALWAYS has it`s antenna at the bottom of the phone. FCC regulation - has to do with the amount of radiation to the head"

Really? You really believe this. Cellphone antennas are omni-directional. They radiate in every direction, every time they radiate. Three inches won`t make a difference in the amount of radiation your head receives. And the radiation isn`t strong enough to penetrate your body. That`s why this problem exists. They stopped selling cell phone radiation "blockers" in the early 90`s for a reason. And most blackberry style smartphones have their antennas in the top of the phone.

"THANK YOU!! People forget that just a few years ago phones were monsters that were used to...talk on!! What a concept! God, I remember the cell phones from the 90`s..."

The word "phone" may still be used, but these devices are much more than phones now. Only about 20% of my time for the phone for actual talking and the rest on other things like email, referencing materials, and of course entertainment. So you can still call them "phones`, but they are much more. And new phones should be judged on things other than whether they can make call because these aspects are quickly becoming more and more essential to more people.

For all of those who don`t get it...

There have been complaints that the iPhone 4`s signal goes down when you hold it because the steel band around it is used as an antenna. Others` are saying that the people having those problems are holding the phone wrong. However, in these screenshots, the people in the ads are holding the phone "wrong".

The antenni are located in the bottom left corner. It`s not iPhone specific, it happens with other phones too. Using a bumper or case lessens/removes the problem.

a) The HSUPA/GSM/CDMA/[insert your network tech] unibody phone almost ALWAYS has it`s antenna at the bottom of the phone. FCC regulation - has to do with the amount of radiation to the head. You can block/short out the signal on most smartphones if you try hard enough.

b) I`ve never actually had this happen to me yet - ok, so i`ve had the thing one day - but i nearly always hold the phone with my left hand, and honestly, even if i try i can`t get it to drop a call. If i try hard enough, i can get it to reduce the bars - supposedly the bumper case thingy fixes it. So far it`s really been a non-issue for me.

Apple should charge people a couple of hundred for the privilege of being allowed to have an `i` tattooed on their forehead. After all, many people are eager to pay to advertise Apple and consider an `i` worth a couple of hundred added to the price of an item, so why not?

More proof that Apple lives in their own universe. The first Nokia bricks that were antenna-less had the same problem. Nokia fixed it by putting internal antennae in the top of the phone. In the 90`s. Way to research your design, Apple.

Male 1,122
Explanation: The entire outer frame is actually 2 separate antennae. 1 is dedicated for the phone, the other for network communication.
The problem is if you hold it where EVERY IPHONE COMMERCIAL shows users holding it, it bridges the gap between those two antennae and wrecks the signal as they are not supposed to touch. The same thing would happen if you held it at the top right. The irony comes in that Steve Jobs blames the users, but their commercials show people doing the same thing.

For those who don`t read the news, the new iphone has its antenna on the body of the phone on the lower left corner, so if you hold it like the pics you will gradually lose signal until you have no signal left at all. Epic fail for the apple fags.

if you buy one you are not buying anywhere near the best smartphone on the market, no matter how badly you think you are.

andriod phones have had better capabilities for over a year now. this new ifail can barely do what andriods were doing with ease 6 months ago...

Steve Jobs loves that you buy his crap anyway!
now go download the iHover app for your phone so you can actually use it w/o having to hold it!

Ok I think I get it, so you can`t touch the bottom left corner otherwise the iPhone 4 breaks? That`s pretty darn flimsy. I hold my iProd - sorry, iPad Nano - in my right hand and use my right thumb (unless I`m typing, then I use my left finger), so I would be OK... if I wasn`t saving up for an HTC instead.

The fact that I felt compelled to tell you how I hold an iPod has caused me to die a little inside...

long and skinny of this, the iphone 4 or whatever has a defect where if you hold it on the edges, you drop all bars (seems like you are shorting it out, by making a circuit with your hand) however, Apple says there is no problem with the phone...or something.

Here’s Apple’s official response to the problem:

Gripping any phone will result in some attenuation of its antenna performance with certain places being worse than others depending on the placement of the antennas. This is a fact of life for every wireless phone. If you ever experience this on your Phone 4, avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of many available cases.

I had to look this up since I had no idea what this was all about. wired.com has more on it if you want to read more about this.

It shows clips from Apple commercials advertising the iPhone 4. In every picture, the person demonstrating the phone is holding it in a way that covers the antenna, which is blocking signal, making the phone not very usable.

Steve Jobs apparently insisted that the consumer is just holding the phone "wrong" and that the problem is not due to the phone being poorly designed, but as you can see the commercials even show the phone being held that way because that is the way you`d hold ANY phone.
