George Carlin And His Take On Religion [Pic]

It would be interesting to see a complete opposite argument for this statement.

Here is how this poo is broken down most of the Loyal Christians out there have never even read, look into or, inquired anything in the bible except for the few interesting parts like revelations ,so go on forever believing in it. The reason atheist act like they know it is because they one day were Christians who decided to read it and wondered WTF i believe in this poo am I retarded??!!!

Atheist on the other-hand are the Matthew Mcconaugheys`/Ashton Kutchers` of Religion Strolling around with a superior complex thinking all religious nuts are little kids believing in bedtime stories, and that your the experienced adults with an undeserved sense of accomplishment.

Just so JA know I`m not saying that crazy poo isn`t real(REPEAT NOT SAYING IT ISN`T REAL.. IT MIGHT BE, IM NOT OVER 2000) but most of you don`t bother to learn the Religion you defend and act like you know it better than anyone and i believe the probability of it is the same as zenu dropping soul essence in

Whether or not you believe the Bible to be in any way inspired by divinity - his take on what the book *actually* says is fundamentally incorrect. The Bible absolutely does *not* say if you stray from the Ten Commandments that you go to hell. Surely it`s obvious the myriad views people have regarding the Bible, however that one is highly skewed, especially for someone claiming even moderate familiarity with the book.

I had a convo with a geologist pal abt god, not whether he xists or not, more of a "this is how religion was created and why it is fading out of society...etc." convo. The basic point he gave me was pretty good. That at first "god/religion" was there to explain things we didn`t understand, as we gain more understanding we have less need for it (other than faith of course) from a strictly scientific POV that works, but then there`s the spiritual POV... ugh it`s just too complicated for me!

It`s not a 12 year old understanding. People once actually believed that in some form or another. We`ve now been up to the sky (and beyond) and found that there is no god/heaven there so the various religions have had to reinterpret things to suggest that he lives "in all of us" or what have you.

The interpretations of your chosen religious text change whenever the current interpretation no longer makes sense in the context of what we have discovered about the world that we live in. Ever play Chinese Whispers? It`s like that. Look far enough back in history and you`ll realize that you`re actually worshipping the sun.

If you close your eyes hard enough and push your fingers in to your ears far enough... you may just be able to ignore the vast amount of logical and scientific evidence suggesting there is no god. If someone offers to open your eyes to the world just shout `NO` and keep your eyes sealed. Only then will God let you in to heaven as you have shown him faith. Keep faith people.

The true message of Christianity says that people like homeless, homosexuals, etc are here to see if you are deserving of entrance into heaven. When you get to the gates you will have to explain the actions of you life. If you mistreated any of God`s children you will have ti explain why (there is no acceptable excuse). Then all those who were so self righteous in life will be denied access to eternal paradise. Thats the general ideals of Christianity, though few Christians actually follow it. But maybe I got the message wrong since im agnostic and not christian.

I believe that the Christian religion is a dying fad, but not religion, itself. Christians believe that because Christianity lasted for 2000 years, it will last forever. No sense of history. Christianity in no way resembles what was going on in the first century. Even the apostle Paul, in the Christian bible, said that he traveled all over Asia minor and could barely find anyone who was still faithful to what the teachings were. Not only this, ancient Egypt`s religion lasted much longer, by about 1000 years. It died along with the empire. All we have now is ruins and a few who choose to honor those gods with new pagan beliefs. This will happen to Christianity as well. In fact, the most steadfast religion seems to be Hinduism. The goddess, Sarasvati, was originally considered the spirit of the Sarasvati river, which dried up between 5000 and three thousand years ago. Though Christianity will die, you can be certain some other group of non-nice individuals will take their place.

Technically, you can`t absolutely prove that there is no god, but absolute truth is useless in the realm of day-to-day reality.

However, it is not necessary for one to disprove the existence of a god, as the burden of proof is on the person positing the claim that "A god exists". It is completely rational for another to say that they simply reject this claim due to lack of evidence; this is Atheism.

You need better history books.

The OT was written long before, as it`s essentially the Jewish bible.

The NT was made from the many Christian writings and stories that existed from the late 1st century AD, maybe earlier. The Christian church (only one of them in those days, since Paul`s followers had won the internal war and further divisions hadn`t really happened yet) formed a big council at Nicea to decide which Christian writings and stories would be officially approved of and which were to be suppressed. The ones they approved of became the NT, which was definitely written down. The whole point was for it to be fixed, officially approved and distributed, which required it to be written down.

10th century? That seems unlikely to me, given that the Christian bible was fixed by the council of Nicea in the 4th century. Are you claiming that the pre-10th century Christian bible was completely binned and replaced by a 10th century rewrite?

Atheism doesn`t necessarily preclude an afterlife, but having faith in an afterlife (and it would be faith, as there`s no evidence for it) would be an odd position for an atheist to hold.

George Carlin didn`t make the comment you replied to, so his atheism is irrelevant to it. It`s freddyferret`s religious beliefs or lack thereof that`s relevant, as they made the comment.

No, but I wouldn`t hunt him down and torture him forever.

I also wouldn`t consider him to have turned his back on me and walked away if he failed to obey my every whim without question, no matter how harmful it was.

Would you order your son to sacrifice his son to you simply because you commanded him to and he must obey you in all things at all times? Do so just as a test of how obedient your son is? Torture him if he wasn`t willing to murder his son for you?

Basically, your god as described is a nutjob. Even if they exist, they are unworthy of humanity.

this is the reason i am now an atheist, and the reason i can raise points to which no christian has a credible answer

and yes i can prove their is no god, i can prove it just as well as you can prove there is one.

@TPGman That fish can see the person feeding it and directly correlate him or her with food.

Unlike that fish we cannot sense even vicariously any kind of higher being that for some perverse reason fixates on our species. Food doesn`t magically fall from the sky and sustain us, everything we know and everything we need to survive is right in front of us to touch and examine.

Love of hate it, the fact is there is NO evidence for a god or creator and even religion concedes this fact by demanding faith. Not all of us are willing to believe something without reason which is what religions demand.

How is THAT so hard to understand?

if you believe in the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost while simultaneously professing your faith is monotheastic, well then, you can talk yourself into anything.

Mahaloth, I was talking about the Christian Bible, not any other monotheistic Bible-like book.

I like the second part of this Carlin bit better, where he says he prays to Joe Pesci. Because Pesci is the kind of guy that gets sh.t done.

Obviously I don`t agree with everything the man said, but I do agree he was a comedic `God`.

The Union Rescue Mission takes money people give to God to help the homeless, the abused women, the drug and/or alcohol inslaved, and pretty much all the dregs of our American society. (Don`t know if they operate outside of the US or not.) So, yeah, if I think God wants me to give Him money, I`ll put it there, and know His ministers are using it wisely. Pat Robertson, the Roman Catholic Church, not so much. Although, they both do some good along the same way. I have no doubts about the nature of the Union, tho.

Yeah, if you believe in religion, you`re destined to burn in hell. If you don`t, well, one less thing to worry about. (You can tell me I`m going to burn in hell for not believing in your religion, but I don`t believe you.)

Oh! Not to mention that everyone`s going to burn in hell for not believing in every religion that says you`ll burn in hell for not believing in that religion.

The original teachings in the years following 30 AD? Or in the 900`s AD, when it is commonly believed among historians that the Bible was first written (in Latin, I might add, which most people could not understand)?

@mastrmind How have I taken anything out of context? I`ve got a quote here to work from, I don`t know anything beyond that. If there`s context to be considered then it isn`t me that`s taken it out of it. And it`s more that God is timeless and spaceless, He`s completely beyond our universe and our understanding; and yes even I accept that that does seem to be a bit of a get-out clause

Hah, maybe you should quit taking things out of context then.

He`s simply pointing out that a "god" who supposedly loves and forgives all of mankinds weaknesses, will condemn you to eternal pain and suffering out of "Love" and people Love him for it. And throw money at him.

If god isn`t a man, or invisible or lives in the sky. Then the logical assumption is he must be living somewhere in the plane between mortality and the "beyond", thus... a ghost!

Also your point about age, according to your age group I could be just months younger than you.
Side note, don`t actually know who this bloke is I`m just not a fan of people having a go at religion

@Siyanor, I`m basing this on having studied religion. Admittedly I have overlooked the subdivisions, I`m going to hold my hands up and admit that but the original teachings are that He isn`t which was more what I was getting at.

God is not invisible nor does He live in the sky nor is he a man.

That made me laugh. So he`s a ghost!?

You`re 13-17 and think you have the entire concept of "religion" down.

George Carlin was a god........... In the comedian industry.

Well had to make an account to comment on your very eye opening answer about where nonbelievers end.

Personally i would rather be in a box in the ground than get up top, because then i would have to beat the crap out of the thing up there.

Oh and people in the box in the ground don`t really give a damn about it, because you know, they are kinda dead, and that means your brain is not working, and that means the person is not really a person anymore, that means he doesn`t exist anymore :) peace! Anyone got Satans number?

Frankii, I think YOU need to get your facts straight. You obviously believe your sect-- sect, not religion-- is the only religion in existence. Well, sorry to tell you, but there are millions of Christians-- yes, Christians-- who believe that God is an invisible man in the sky.

I like Carlin, and most people here probably see me as a religious nut.

I was saying this pretty much last week, where we differ though, is minor details, such as if any religious organization ever told me that they needed money I`m not stupid enough to fall for it.

I`m very good at noticing who is trying to take stuff off me. It`s not God.

Now, everyone on IAB, send me your money, it`s for erm, cancer cures.

Notice here, it would be a pretty stupid thing to send me money.
It would be equally stupid to blame cancer cures for wanting your money.

Similarly, if I claim to be a Nigerian Prince or Banker, I`m probably lying. Nigerian princes don`t really want your money, the non-nice individual pretending to speak on their behalf does.

Etc.

He took the 10 Commanment and made them 2:

Thou shalt always be honest and faithful
to the provider of thy nookie.

&

Thou shalt try real hard not to kill anyone, unless of course
they pray to a different invisible man than you.

Nowhere in the bible nor in any religious interpretation is it claimed that God is an "invisible man, living in the sky"

He`s semi-right about the money part - it`s the churches who angle for money, not God.

As bad ass as George Carlin was, that`s way too vague and generalized to make much sense. the whole thing with religion is it was used as a control mechanism a few thousand years ago because people in large groups e.g; cities... act retarded eventually. The deities vary from religion to religion; and where he (and I`m sure a lot of people here) got the idea that there is an invisible man in the sky, I don`t think anyone will ever know. pshhh... "watches us".... GODS are all knowing.

God is not invisible nor does He live in the sky nor is he a man. He is beyond human understanding. God doesn`t watch, He is omniscient. You are not immediately damned for breaking any of the ten commandments. If you`re sorry for it then you are forgiven. I`m not going to try and convert you, but if you`re going to criticise religion, at least get your facts straight.
