Garter removal Does anyone else feel uncomfortable about this part of the wedding reception?

@ Epiphany101: It would be bad enough if it were the new hubby doing it, but in most weddings the man to remove said garter is actually the man-of-honor! Basically, the groom`s bestie!

#25 is a win.

Though...she`s not very good at hiding facial expressions. He`s probably like "dang it, woman!"

I did the garter thing at my wedding, but the garter lived below my knee, I kept my legs together, and I lifted the skirt so he could see what he was doing. It doesn`t have to be as crass as some people make it. We auctioned it off to the highest bidder and threw the money in our make-a-home pot.

I`m very relieved to say I`ve never seen this done at any wedding I`ve ever been to. Seeing a bride`s new hubby rummaging round under their skirt in public just seems a bit crass...

I`ve never been to a wedding like that. Is that common?

I heartily agree with Moefreak; from any angle you look at it this just seems degrading. I can`t imagine taking a girl`s panties off in front of her father and my mother. I would not want to watch a guy, approved of or not, take my daughter`s panties off.

Back in the middle ages, people used to rip off the bride`s dress so they could get a piece of her clothing for good luck.

So they started tossing the bouquet and garter so people would stop trying to strip her.

There is nothing sexier than a woman in a wedding dress. That`s why I never complain when the wife turns it to Say Yes To The Dress on TLC.

Not happening at my wedding. I like to imagine that we could have fun without all these ridiculous "traditions", like having my new husband shove his head under my dress while my grandmother watches. (Well, she`s dead. But you know what I mean)

When i was about 11 i was at a wedding and they got the groom to throw the garter into a crowd and who ever caught it would have to take it off one of the brides maids. I caught it....that was a fun night!

Meh, not a big deal. At my cousin`s wedding no one was embarrassed, it was more of a funny point since the groom was so hilarious and sort of made it a joke.

We had a few rules at our wedding - one was no garter ceremony and the other was no playing old time rock & roll or lady in red.

Hmm, part of me wants to keep up tradition, but when I watched m stepbrother just dive under his wife`s skirt at their wedding, it, er, gave me pause... Seems a little too private of an activity for a wedding!!

It`s like the most bizarre tradition at weddings. We didn`t do it at ours because I have more respect than that for my wife and hated watching my sisters have it done.
