Well that was unfortunately stereotypical, thinking USA + France + South Africa = World )-|. Anyway, brilliant for you guys to be through. I was routing for you. Best team of the group. Now you can get to the semis if you play your cards right.

Nothing stereotypical about it; the title is play on "The Shot Heard Round the World", a reference to the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and the subsequent heralding of the Great War (first World War). Additionally, this phrase could also be in reference to the American Revolution in regard to the shot fired at Lexington and Concord, but I`m not quite sure on that one.

Heh, I actually said after watching the USA`s first game that this is going to be the world cup that people stop making fun of the USA`s football team.

They`ve been doing pretty solid, their fitness level is *way* up, though their skill levels still need work.

England played far better in the USA/Eng match than the USA did though, you`re just lucky you have an excellent goalkeeper.

England is playing minus their captain (Rio Ferdinand was injured in practice) and with their worst of 3 goalkeepers (David James is the most experienced, Joe Hart has had the best season).

    as for AuburnJunky:
I saw America play Algeria. I`m surprised it wasn`t 3:4. America plays an offensive game with near 0 defense. They will lose as soon as a good European team locks them down, or an African team outpaces them.

You will score more goals. It will cost you the cup.

Also, for the non football fans:

This is why football is awesome.
It`s actually also why American football is awesome.

Games like Basketball and Cricket are like action movies. Every 3 seconds there is an explosion (Yay point number 87).

In football (either), there *isn`t* that. It`s more about the suspense. You can wait an entire match waiting for that one goal after 30 minutes to turn the tide, and when that happens, it is *awesome*.

Auburn, stick to games you know.

Read up on why in goalkeeping, you always need a second barrier. Green didn`t have that. That is his error, for a simple kick.

Goalkeeping in highschool will teach you that.

The fact of the matter is, the USA got a goal, because of Green`s screwup.

I was going to suggest seeing how far each team gets, however:

The USA have a 50:50 shot of beating Ghana, will probably lose to Uruguay, but could make it to Brazil.
    (Rankings of opposing teams: 32, 16, 1).

England has a lineup of probably:
    Germany, Argentina, Portugal, Brazil.
    (Rankings: 6, 7, 3, 1).

The only way we`ll see a fair rematch this year is if we both make it to the final. Good luck. England always do better the second time around. ;)

You know, while some Americans will arrogantly say that the US is going to win the whole damn thing -- and we`re CERTAINLY rooting for them to, make no mistake -- I`m not sure we entirely believe that. What this is about to me IS how we`ve pulled each game out of our asses. It`s movie-esque. It`s captivating enough that an entire country is getting behind a sport they normally don`t care about. I don`t know if it`s ever going to beat any of the major American sports but the longer this goes on the more it`s going to catch on. We`re late to this party, guys, but we`re finally here. All the way? It`s a longshot, which is exactly why you don`t need to rain on our f*cking parade. Let us enjoy this magic while it lasts.

Yay for USA and England in the final. :)

    Peloos:
    1) When countries compete, we argue. If a Slovakian was present when England beat them, I would berate him, he would accept it, and berate me back.

This makes us friends, not enemies.

    2) If you yell "Go <team X>", teams A, B, C, D, ..., Z, get to shout you down. The more you yell, the more they yell.

    3) Americans yell a lot. "USA WINS 1:1!". You cannot expect the rest of the world to let comments like that go without at least a little mockery. :P

Like we do with Germany, and they`re one of the best teams in the league, and of all time.

eh, I actually said after watching the USA`s first game that this is going to be the world cup that people stop making fun of the USA`s football team.

Or notice that the USA *has* a football team.

They might not have got through without Green`s roosterup, but they look like a team who deserve to be there.

It should be called assball in the USA. Seriously, it`s completely logical :)

The origin of the name `soccer` that`s used in the USA is `association football`, i.e. football played under the rules and regulations of the Football Association.

The obvious shortening of that is ASSociation footBALL, i.e. assball. That makes much more sense than asSOCiation football and pulling `CER` from nowhere.

    So...assball.

Erm, it`s not pulled from nowhere actually.

Soccer was a term first used in the UK to differentiate it from other rules systems.

Basically you have football, which then branched off into:

    Cambridge Rules Football.
    > Rugby Rules football
    >> American Football (Later)
    > Association Rules football

The British differentiated it between Rugby and football by calling it "Soccer" and "Rugger".

When we started calling it Rugby, we had no need for the differentiation, so called it Football again.

The Americans however, whose rules are a form of Rugby football, never stopped needing a differentiator, so continued using Soccer.

This is a summary. I`m aware of the bits I have missed. Feel free to look up the full lineage if you`re interested.

    Baal,

You`re actually arguing with class and respect. The people I`m talking about are the ones who comment with a simple "It`s sad that the US gets so excited about a stoppage time goal against a team they should have beaten easily" and "Let`s see the reactions after Ghana beat them 3-0 Saturday". The guys trying to debase our excitement. All you`re really doing is being realistic (while still giving us the credit which is due). No bones to pick with with you.

Not much point, as I knew it already and referred to it in my post.

However, it`s not as amusing as a logical argument for the use of `assball`.

And the `cer` is pulled from nowhere. Do you see it in `Association football`?

The earliest known rules of the game, Of soccer, were written in 1815. Up until then it was just a chaotic game of `kick ball`.

In 1823, Ebb Ellis was the first person noted for picking up the ball during the soccer game and running with it, thereby breaking and changing the rules. In 1876, at the Massosoit convention, the the first attempts at writing down the rules of American football were made.

So American football is an evolution of, And I believe an improvement of, The game of `Football`.

First of all, its Web Ellis, and second, its not an evolution if you cheat and play your own game.
If you play tennis without a racket, its not called tennis.

@LightShaded, Don`t hate bro, just cause Argentina kicked Canada`s 5-0 prior to the start of the Cup. It`s no reason to be a bitter.

    Crakr,
    Read my post.

Ellis, when he picked up the ball, invented Rugby Football, which American football is derived from.

Why, the heavenly drat, are you using "soccer" in your sentences 65 years before the term was used, but using the term football instead of Rugby when talking about American Football`s origins?

Ah it helps your point, so lets just make up names as we go along.

    Drat it.

American football was originally made from milkshakes. It`s a type of meat served on mars. I look forward to many sdjngsuinui sn nfgsdjkngk. Thanks for your sjkgnsi.

Yeah goal heard round the world... i know most americans may disagree with me, like the one who argued with me saying that American Football is a more popular sport around the world than real football aka soccer, but american is not the whole world.

what a bunch of drating clowns. If this isn`t evidence that the human race is worthless, I don`t know what is. They are cheering for a bunch of apes kicking a drating ball.

It was nice to see Americans supporting their team for a sport the majority don`t care about.

However did find it a bit pretentious saying "the worlds" (implying whole), France a country which hates the English wouldn`t watch us, and the US fans in SA don`t make the world. Like World series....

will sound arrogant but most of the foootie fans across the globe will have watched the England match on at same time, as we`re ranked a higher team, with our league and players being more high profile around the world. And we`re playing atrociously so people would want to watch and see if we got knocked out.

But congrats on winning (by goals) and bad luck about Ghana

Lol at the suggestion that American football is more popular than actual football. I`m guessing people don`t see the irony that "American football" is just for the US, and proper football is supported by everyone else??
