Holy crap, there were plenty of moments there where his head was extremely close to snapping off

"His car all but disappeared around him."
Just like it was supposed to.

If you really want to see a car disappear, look up Gordon Smiley.

Those roosterpits are built to withstand some massive crash forces. Still that was bad and scary from every angle.

Safety in the top end classes (Indycar, WRC, F1, NASCAR) has dramatically improved over the 20 years I`ve been watching it. That would have killed him a few years ago. Wearing a HANS device sure as hell will have helped, that`ll be for sure.

I`d be pretty damn surprised if his helmet DID come off considering it`d take his head off with it. Then there`s the HANS device Fwoggie mentioned, the monocoque safety cell he`s sitting in...

It`s a given that no-one would want to me Mike Conway in that situation, but I wouldn`t want to be Ryan Hunter-Reay (who he hit) - did you see how close he was to getting hit in the face with a car?!

I would normally say more than that on a car-related thread, but I`ve seen this elsewhere twice today already...

they design these cars now with a shell around the driver, basically encasing him in hardcore materials that wont burn or break in even the most horrific crashes (like this one). The seatbelts fire with small pyrotechnic charges that snap the harness so tight it probably broke a few of his ribs but also means he cant fly out of the seat. Its the same technology they use in fighter jet ejector seats to stop the pilots neck from breaking when they hit the wind stream at 600mph (ever tried sticking your head out of a car window at 60? yeah). Luck has nothing to do with it, this guys survival is a testament to the amazing safety precautions indy cars have now.

the car did what it was suppose to. engineering at its finest. what i was surprised by was the fact that i heard nothing about debris hitting the crowd. i realize there`s a fence but that`s a lot of carbon fiber shrapnel flying everywhere.

i agree with mildcorma. when carbon fibre breaks like that it shreads into little tiny jagged pieces that would severely hurt someone. unless those fences have chicken wire or something to catch the big stuff. in which case all the little stuff would probably loose momentum before it hit anyone
