also it said blame shoddy chemists for calling it a form of lead, its quite sensible since they thought carbon couldnt conduct electricity like other non metals and they didnt have any better equipment to find out what it was

i prefer the English name HB, it allows much more opportunity for innuendo. (it stands for "Hard and Black")

...This wasn`t very strange, I already knew most of them. Or maybe I`m just weird that way. :-) Well some of them were just kind of obvious, like the reason we use #2 pencils on scantrons. :-P

Were a few of these questions worded weirdly just so the author could add an odd sidenote of knowledge?

Yes, in fact the author knows so many weird things that will never come up in normal conversation that he often poses these questions in real life.

When I found out about the other hardnesses of pencils, it blew my mind! I had no idea what "#2" was about, especially when I started using mechanical pencils.

I like it. Trivial knowledge is so wonderful, especially when it pertains to an object we all use often.

OldOllie: Can`t you ever say something nice like: "Oh, that article had some really useful information which I did not know, and I do not feel the need to rant about." ?

It`s interesting that no one knows how to make a pencil. To do so, one would have to know forest management; logging and how to make logging tools and equipment; transportation and logistics and how to build trucks and all the parts to make a truck; woodworking and how to make wood working tools and machinery; iron mining, smelting, and steel making and machining; oil exploration, drilling, production, and refining; chemistry and chemical engineering (to make the paint and erasers); and that`s just skimming the surface. How about the integrated circuits in the machinery or writing the code to program them? Or how about building an electric power plant to run the factory?

In fact, it takes many thousands of people just to make a pencil.

Relieving boredom is our small contribution to humanity. And we do it for free, while ignoring all the crap we get. Our reward awaits us in heaven. Or something.

xmastree, I think they meant when it was discovered that there was graphite in New Hampshire.

The article never claimed the New Hampshire site was the first graphite ever found. It explains that the american pencil numbering system stems from that discovery.

Read before posting "corrections".

"When graphite was discovered in New Hampshire during the 1820s,"

Only 300 years after it was discovered in borrowdale.
