For anyone who still has doubts, check the video at the bottom of this page from the company that made this. You can see the building from different angles and see how it looks distorted when not viewed straight-on/from the intended viewpoint, like those sidewalk drawings others have mentioned. Yup, as insane as it looks, it`s real.

Other key things to point out is that, because the building was mapped out and scanned before the program was created. The program itself knows when the surface that a particular image is to be projected onto is farther away than another area. For example, the pillars. When the projectors go to move an image from, say, the middle door to one of the pillars, which is closer, it actually dynamically enlarges the projected image so that the effect of distance change is negated.

Another interesting thing to keep in mind in this is that "ambient effects" such as the glare from the laser-like effects in the video, are also projected images, just like adding lens flare to a photo. Everything you see on the building other than the dark areas, is projected from the camera, even the things that seem like just natural effects. You have to remember that the fact the building is completely dark only helps, rather than hinders.

@Prejudiced: First the building is scanned for shape and features. Then an artist uses a custom program to draw in the animations and such how he sees fit. 3D effects are created not by the presence of light, but actually the absence of it. Hence why this is best done at night. Shadows and depth are created by certain portions of the building remaining UNLIT.

@r3tr0r0ck3r: The entire system uses multiple projectors (LED I believe, from what I read about the technology) scattered in an array formation. That`s how the three dimensional effects are created. And the projectors themselves are usually housed on a lighting beam above the common flow of traffic.

It looks really good and is very clever, but there`s no way to tell from the video that it is projected and not just edited in post. But wouldn`t this only work when viewed from one point? And where is it projected from? If something gets in the way it`d ruin it.

its just regular projection... but it uses the same concepts of perception that sidewalk art uses... from other angles it would look totally f*ed up...

Once they make the home version, no one will buy paint.

To clarify, I`m not saying that this isn`t possible, I`m just saying that THIS video is just showing what can be done.

"I repeat, there are no light projectors. Don`t believe me? Pay close attention to the street lights. You can tell it`s fake."

I`m not saying it is real, nor am I saying it is fake, but I don`t see how you can use streetlights to gauge the authenticity of this? Elaborate.

I assume if it is real it would be similar to 3d light technology... Think those 3d TVs (the ones you don`t need glasses for) that project the light at different angles so it seems to be projected in front of the screen. I assume the light rays intersect and that is what provided the projected image... But that could be totally wrong too.

This is known as Architectural Projection Mapping and it`s 100% authentic. This video MIGHT have been doctored a bit, unsure, but the technology IS available. You can see another version where they used it for the Iron Man 2 AC/DC promo here: http://vimeo.com/11160666

You guys, this is all fake as hell. How can you not tell that? This isn`t light projectors at all. All the effects are done after filming the structures for a while.

I repeat, there are no light projectors. Don`t believe me? Pay close attention to the street lights. You can tell it`s fake.

I think a couple of these are not light projected....Theres a few where the buildings fascade completly fades from view....Not like the building collapse where u can still see the building....But excelent nonetheless

That was the best thing I`ve seen in a long time !!
So.. people standing there can see it in 3D?? or would the perspective be off. I did`nt see many of the pedestrians really stopping and gawking at the building.
