Aren`t Boeing 747s the only 4 engine commercial planes? What if the plane only has two engines? Or does it not work that way?

[quote]And, usually, commercial airliners have four engines. They can land with either three, or even two engines still running. If you get all the way down to one, you`re pretty well screwed. With one engine on a modern 4 engine passenger plane, you might still be able to fly (just) or at least lose height more slowly.

Even without any working engines, you can glide. You can`t get a net lift, but you can get a controlled descent. You`re not screwed if there`s an airport close enough. A modern large passenger plane at a normal cruising altitude could be glided about 100 miles and then landed, if the pilot is good and conditions aren`t too bad.

The last thing I want to see flying? Heck, I`d be pressed against the window wanting to get a better look.

Pilots can safely land a plane with only one engine.

All you need to worry about is how you`re going to make it to your connecting flight. :)

"You mean apart from the balance of the aerodynamics of the whole plane changing?"
That would be a slight change in aerodynamics. Pilots experience much more turbulence from clouds than what would be produced from that.

"Maybe because, oh I don`t know, that cover panel is there to protect the mechanics that are necessary to keep that engine going, and hence you in the air...?"

Yes, but it will only take damage to force it to shut down if there is debris or moisture. Otherwise it should hold up. The air is being guided away from the mechanics still.

Regardless, pilots are trained to fly with one engine. Even with only one running flight is still easily possible.

Don`t worry guys, I know it could still land with one engine intact, but still, not a great scenario.

old pic!!!...and this is about the time `belivers` start praying to nothing to `prevent a catastrophe` or `ask for forgiveness`...but what they will actually have in common is the outcome...

I would most probably not realize the level of possible horror. I suspect my mind would just block it out, and I`d instead be terribly fascinated by the workings of the engine. ^^

Looks realllly cool when you aren`t in the plane... I can just picture a little 8 year old kid staring out the window "oh look at the cool thingy, mom!" mom-"Not now Timmy, I am watching the movie"

A plane can be landed with no engines and a bus-sized hole ripped in it. A very good pilot can glide a full size passenger jet much better than most people would expect. You`re going down, but the pilot might well be able to make a survivable landing at an airport.

Knowing that sort of thing probably wouldn`t do much to calm me if I was looking out that window.

No, planes are safer in both, dolt.

Davy`s joke says it best.

That plane would have been fine even if the engine *fell off*.

Back in the passeneger cabin, Paddy turns to Seamus and exclaims "Jaysus! Sure if this fourth engine goes, we`ll be up here all feckin` night!"

See, told you it was a bad one...

Reminds me of an old (bad) joke...

Paddy and Seamus are onboard a 747 on their way from Boston into Dublin Airport. Halfway across teh Atlantic, the captain comes on and announces "Ladies and Gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. I`m afraid we`ve just power in one of our engines. Nothing to worry about, as we can still fly perfectly fine on three engines, but we are going to be around 15 minutes late arriving in Dublin".

A little while later, the captain comes on again... "Ladies and Gentlemen, I`m sorry to inform you that we`ve just a surge in engine number two. Again, nothing to worry about, but this will mean we`ll be arriving 30 minutes late into Dublin".

Later again, the captain addresses the passengers again, this time with a hint of panic in his voice "Folks, we`ve just lost engine number three. Doing all we can on the flight deck to resolve the situation. We`ll be about 1 hour late into Dublin".

So the engine is missing it`s skin. Hardly fatal, it takes a lot more to incapacitate an engine than to rip off its exterior casing. Even if the engine failed entirely, any modern plane can land safely on one engine.

Just looks like someone was doing maintenance and forgot to latch the cowling down completely. Doubtful that its FOD related. Could even be a test

That is horrible, how could a plane possibly fly without the casing around one of its engines?

/sarcasm off

The quality of care that commercial aircraft get is astounding. Some times things go wrong, but planes very resilient. The casing flying off of an engine, while leaving the engine operational, doesn`t even show up on the list of "oh poo" scenarios.

Planes are designed to fly with just one engine if need be and worse comes to worst there is always a corn, or wheat field that the pilot can try to land in. LOL. No seriously though from the landscape outside it looks as if the plane is already on approach to land

tstybluecryons, relax, you`re in several tons of metal at 30000 ft. Gravity might want to take the plane and smash it into metal kibblets far far below.. but a little itsy bitsy flow of air over the wings will keep you safely aloft.

Probably.

domisgood. You can see the ground most times when you`re flying. Just look down out of the window....

perhaps what you mean is ... the last thing I`d want to see if I was flying would be the ground coming through the forward bulkhead.
