From age 3 to 12 I was convinced I was a girl in a boy`s body.

To this day I`m not sure why I`m not gay.

That`s kind of my point: why does it matter what sex I see a person as? I can be easily fooled without subjecting your body to surgical mutilation and hormone levels your body isn`t supposed to produce -- don`t go through all that on *my* account.

Likewise, if gender is the way you feel about *yourself* (as I`m often told it is), then your outward appearance should be fine the way it is (or was, in the above example) and no amount of surgery or hormone treatments could possibly do anyone any good.

What`s left are the clinically depressed acting out through radical self-abuse, and other-genitalia-experience fetishists. If that`s the case I suggest therapy and possibly medication rather than radical unnecessary surgery.

And yes, I feel the same way about face-lifts, boob jobs, and tummy-tucks, too.
It doesn`t matter how I define a person`s sex
Of course it does, because that determines what sex you see a person as being and a person`s sex is part of the foundation of this whole thing.

You appear to be defining it by chromosome type, as you think it`s not about a person`s mind or their body.

@Angilion: "How do you define a person`s sex"

It doesn`t matter how I define a person`s sex -- I disagree with the person in the pictures, though: it`s got to be about more than how you look. And to put your body through these radical changes for the vanity of fooling people (and *trying* to fool yourself) isn`t the answer.

Now that`s a good point, but it ties in with the question you didn`t answer:

How do you define a person`s sex?

I think it`s a much more difficult question than it first seems.

To answer your question, I`d say it depends (although I`d pretty it up for an answer for my wife or brother). Useless answer, but it`s the best I have. I`d certainly understand if they wanted reconstructive surgery (and HRT for the man in your examples).

What gives you the impression I said it was?
Without taking hormones and the surgeon`s knife, this guy was just a guy who wanted to cut his genitals off.
No, he was a guy who wanted to be a woman. Not the same thing at all unless you regard a woman as a neutered man.
If he had wanted to cut his wrists we`d provide counseling for his depression and help him adjust to life.
Right - give the right treatment for the problem. In this case, a sex change. It works a lot better than counselling.

Sex changes aren`t about getting a vagina because you`re effeminate, or getting a penis because you happen to be butchy. Sex changes are about getting yourself into the body you feel you belong in. Your mind feels like a boy, so you turn your body into a male one, so that you feel like yourself and vice-verse.

@paulyshore Gender Dysphoria is the mental condition of feeling wrong in your body. I had a pretty extreme case. You`re a guy, and I`mma assume you have a penis. You`re comfortable with your penis. Your sexual fantasies involve your penis, right? I mean, when you think about sex, you think about sex as a guy. Ok, so what if you didn`t have a penis? What if you were born a woman, but still all your sexual desires/fantasies revolved around you having a penis? This is just one of the aspects of the mental dysphoria involved, I`m trying to keep this basic. You go to therapists, try to work it out, and eventually come to the decision that the only way to remedy this is to change your body to match your mental state, since changing your mental state isn`t working, and you`re on the edge of suicide. Does that help you understand at all?

@wake_n_bake I adapt the speech to the guy. Sometimes it`s easy, sometimes it`s not. Usually, I`ll just be very straightforward about it, something along the lines of "There`s something I have to tell you. I was born male. I`m better now, though" :P Most guys take it pretty well, considering. A few have even stuck around for more dates.

maybe someone can enlighten me -

i don`t understand sex changes. how does changing your genitalia help you identify with yourself more? that`s just adhering to gender stereotypes, in`t it? because you act/feel effeminate you must have tits and a cooch?

i guess it`s the same thing as something like a nose job - you want to look how you feel you should look. but again - to me, it`s just pigeon holing yourself (not your body, your actual self) more.

not against it by any means, just simply don`t. get. it.

This isn`t a case of ambiguous genitalia: look at the photos. Without taking hormones and the surgeon`s knife, this guy was just a guy who wanted to cut his genitals off. If he had wanted to cut his wrists we`d provide counseling for his depression and help him adjust to life.
Except it`s not guy to girl -- it`s guy to guy with mutilated genitalia.
I`ll bite:

How do you define a person`s sex?

I`ll be surprised if you can come up with a definition that works. By `works`, I mean that it`s accurate and covers everyone.

I suspect you`re using the simplest genetic definition - XY = male, XX = female.

That doesn`t work and never really did, even before sex changes were possible. Reality is more complicated. Phenotype does not always follow genotype.

The etiquette actually would refer to her as `she` at all times. HRT is used when a person is born in the wrong body for who they are mentally and emotionally. While you can refer to a person who is pre-HRT as the biological gender, it is typically not referred to as who the person truly is. As for the back-and-forth concept, there are a myriad of side-effects and disorders that would arise from that. It`s not as easy as just popping x number of pills every day and calling it good. There are so many adverse reactions involved, I seriously doubt ANY doctor would approve of the go-back option, which is why you have to first go through (in most places) at LEAST 2 years of psychological treatment to be sure this is what`s right for you, then the HRT, THEN gender re-assignment. I have known several people who`ve gone both M-t-F and F-t-M, and it`s not a choice to take lightly, or change your mind about afterward without serious risks to your health.
as far as I`m concerned, she is a she. She used to be a he, but is now a she. You can argue about genes and dna all you want, it doesn`t matter!
That`s also my point of view. Genes are like plans for a body - they`re not the body itself. Usually the body follows the plans, but that doesn`t mean the plans are the body. It`s also possible to have a mismatch naturally. e.g. a female person with a Y chromosome. People aren`t even sure how rare it is, because it could pass unnoticed (hardly anyone has their DNA looked at to check their sex chromosomes).

Say I`m a builder with plans for a 3-bed semi with two garages. At some point, I decide to change one of the garages into a pool. The plans haven`t changed. There`s still a garage on the plans. Is the pool still a garage?

Could be just pills, but there was probably some surgery involved to change their genitals. The rest can be just pills, though. Men and women are nowhere near as different as it`s popular to think and the right hormone mix can go a very long way towards changing a person`s sex.

Going back and forth would be useful, but you`re looking at far too much time and bother and you can`t keep doing the surgery. Besides, most places will only do a sex change after lengthy medical evaluation. If I recall correctly for the UK, it takes a year before they`ll start.

I`d like to be able to switch back and forth. It would be interesting.

It would also be handy if everyone switched sexes every now and again. That would kill sexism pretty quickly.

"I believe that a person can be trapped in the wrong sex. What the mind wants is what the mind wants. The body is nothin more than a physical representation of the mind. So all the more power to HER."

Science backs you up. A neurologist compared the brains of m to f transgendered people to the brains of men and women, and their brains resembled the brains of women more (looking at specific key structures that have previously been identified as linked to gender- don`t ask me what they are). Basically, this and other studies suggest that gender is hard-wired into the brain as much as it is hard-wired into the body- and sometimes brain and body don`t match.

@campofclay Yes, that`s exactly what SHE did, though it was many pills, over a long period of time. The long term effects of hormone replacement therapy are irreversible, however, though they can be somewhat undone with surgery. If you`re looking for easy to change body mods, I`d suggest piercings as a much cheaper and less life threatening alternative. :P Of course, then you`re at risk for a "daddy didn`t love me" post. What number are we up to again?

@msieg007 You`re right, of course. I`ll never be a "genetic girl." I`ll even concede it`s possible for someone to go from knowing they are female mentally to knowing they are male mentally, and vice versa. Going to have to maintain my position on the not being a dude aspect of things, though. I know from experience I`m not going to change the mind of someone like you, who has made up their mind otherwise, so I`m not trying anymore. I`m settling for mocking your close-mindedness today.

When I was 5 my mother went through the process to become a male. Prior to this, she was really messed up emotionally. Afterwards, HE was one of the most stable and grounded people I`ve ever known. AND he was the BEST dad and friend I could have wished for. Sadly, he passed away about 2 mo. ago. Good lord, people.
1. No, not `gentically` a female, but that`s not the point anyway. They`re just trying to get their body to more closely match their mind.
2. Can`t `breed`, not a woman: so my ex-gf can`t have children, and she was born female, does that make her a dude?
3. "IT". just stop. Nobody is an `it`.
4. and this is the big one...WHY DOES IT MATTER TO YOU SO DAMN MUCH? If person A is a female, and person B is a male, and they`re both good people, everythings fine. But as soon as person A wishes to be male, and person B wishes to be female, suddenly they`re bad people? Get over it, already.

The above points are not aimed at those who seem to `get it` already.

Oh, one more thing, what`s wrong with hair behind the ears hairstyle? simple and it`s out of the way.

But if lopping his stem off(assuming he`s gone this far), and adding some silicone makes him happy. Then good for him. :)

Musuko42, not saying everyone must breed, but sometimes, some people have really great genes (mostly appearance wise), so I think it`s a pity that those genes aren`t given to someone else to maintain eye candy down along the generations.

It`s just my quirky way of seeing beauty in someone. It includes straight people too. Like how such a waste it is that Jonathan Rhys Meyers is still not a father. He should be making babies by the dozen.

@rakoonhat

And what the hell does it matter what gender she is medically, unless you`re her doctor?

He/she are pronouns, remember? And what is a pronoun, class? That`s right! It`s a short form substitute for a noun. And in the case of he and she, a proper noun. And what proper nouns are applied to people? That`s right class, their name! And by gosh, people can choose their name, can`t they class? They don`t have to have a doctor certify their name, do they class? Noooo, that`s right children, they don`t. And people can change their name, can`t they children? So what have we learned today, children? That people can change their name, which is the noun that identifies them, and the pronoun you use to identify them is a substitute for that name, and that identity, so it should change too? Very good children!

You all get gold stars.

Relax; don`t let it worry you. Every time you open your mouth (move your typing fingers?) on the internet, and particularly on IAB, that will happen. Don`t let it put you off joining in.

Relax. Smile. Pump 12 rounds into the dartboard with Davymid`s face sticky-taped to it. I know it helps me.

sandra bullock has an adams apple laxdef. and to all of you that made the "im not against them, i have several friends that are...." thats a horrible arguement. thats like me saying i dont hate the evil animals known as cats because my mother owned a cat. its like saying "just because i called him a racial slur, lit his house on fire, and beat him up because he`s a different color than me, doesnt make me a racist. ive got friends of such and such race" find a stronger arguement. (i wont be checking this ever again, so please lay on the comebacks and the rants on how wrong i am. its not that im afraid to check it, ive just got better things to do with my time)

idk still looks like a guy in the face and hairline. So he is not gay, just feels like a woman born in a mans body? I have an awesome friend steven who was born a girl and had a sex change to become a gay man. So to me this guy or now girl is pretty normal.

im not trying to put bi/lesbian/or gay down. im okay with it...i have numerous friends who have choosen that lifestyle, and even family who have done so. thier lifestyle is not the discussion here. it has become something that was taken the wrong way and made into an argument for arguings sake.

and no one is fighting what he what he sees himself as, i dont care what anyone considers themself...you wanna be a flying spaghetti monster, awesome go for it. regardless you being thirtyish doesnt make you right with or w/o being in a medical field, your opinions do not trump mine nor do mine trump yours. its a he..that my opinion it will not be changed.

Obviously SHE sees herself as a girl, so the pronoun would be SHE, not IT. She might not "medically" be a guy anymore, btw.

But congrats to her for a great transformation.

As for he/she/it... you use the word which is how THEY identify. If she now sees herself as a female, you refer to her as "her" otherwise it`s just rude.

It`s rude to refer to a living being as "it" as the title is seen as degrading because it itemizes the subject. When itemized, a subject loses a lot of respect.

She`s wicked pretty! I mean don`t get me wrong the before was nice looking but at least she`s happier now and actually can decently pass for female. Not trying to be rude to other trans people out there but sometimes no matter how hard you try to be the opposite sex you can just always kind of tell something isn`t "right". She actually passes well.

i love how all the girls are talking about how pretty she is, while most of the guys are getting uncomfortable. i really dont care what people do as long as they dont hurt anyone, also as long as you are upfront about this sort of thing and not try to keep it hidden from guys or girls she might try to date in the future. im an open minded person, but i just dont think i would be comfortable with being with a woman who used to be a man. especially if they are not upfront with it right away and bring it up some time down the road, that could create discomfort and anger.

...this doesn`t seem gross. She (I`m sticking with that pronoun) looks really happy in the later pics, so I`m glad for her. However, the transition from 2003 to 2005 is pretty extreme to me, amusingly it is more so than the change within 2008 when she started taking HRT. Maybe it`s just the different stretches of time.

The neck still looks really masculine to me. And there`s nothing she can really do about her bone structure. As a photographer, if I didn`t know any better I wouldn`t be able to say she used to be a guy, but at the least I would notice the masculine build and facial structure. Still, a crazy transformation in only eight years.

Fancy, you REALLY need to work on your face recognition skills, before you end up in this situation:

As for the actual person...

I`ve always been able to pick out people like this, going both ways. Just a natural sense I guess... In this case, it`s definitely the jaw that sets off the alarm, though. I`d be able to detect him/her.

Good for her for choosing to be more comfortable in her own skin, though.
