Link: Switzerland Giving Out Small Condoms To Their Kids - I-A-B, good idea or bad? Their 12-year-old boys will be getting extra-small condoms to prevent pregnancy. Nice?

I don`t see why they advertise them "for 12-14 year olds". Just call them extra small and put them on the shelf, that`d get rid of all of the possible controversy o.o

It`s unavoidable. They`re having sex. That`s a fact. So it`s best to supply the protection that they need.

This is better than America, who prefer to say to kids/teens that abstinence is the way. America is one of the country that have the more abortions in the world.

very misleading title. Nobody is giving out condoms to 12 year olds, they`re making smaller condoms to fit them in case ugh!

But anyways not a bad idea, if the 12 year olds are getting busy then provide protection for them. And if their is some tiny guy out there ashamed to buy the small ones he can just say they`re for his son lol

@magalo: I don`t know what "America" you are talking about. When I was in school we were taught sexual education and the use of protection, not just abstinence. Also China is the forerunner for abortions. Do your homework before you spout nonsense.

That being said, it is interesting in the article that the head of the development said "They do not have a very developed sexual knowledge." Here`s an idea...sexual education to pre-teens in school. I agree that the smaller condoms are a step in the right direction, but it doesn`t help them being ignorant of the consequences.

This is ridiculous, Kids should be preoccupied with `kid` stuff, Not sex. There is plenty of time later for sex, When they are mature and can handle the consequences both financially & emotionally.

Honestly I don`t see what the big deal is. Just because you give kids condoms, or market some for them doesn`t mean they are ALL going to suddenly decide to go out and have sex like crazy. Do I like that 12 year olds are starting to have sex so very young, no not really. But at least if they do they won`t have the potential to get a girl pregnant, or possible STD`s.

@Gerry - they`re already basically labeled as extra small. Getting a larger condom because of pride issues is ridiculous, the girls going to see their size anyway and wearing a non-fitting condom will just result in pregnancy ;X Labeling it as condoms for 12-14 year olds could result in pride issues for the adult male who may need that size too, so that`s not really an argument anyway.

CrakrJak - You can say that and believe that all you want, but there are still going to be kids who are going to have sex and when they do they should be able to try to prevent pregnancy/STDs. Not providing condoms to fit them isn`t going to stop them, it`s just ignoring the issue.

Meh, I could care less. I don`t think kids should get condoms. Or abortions. I think the coolest way to teach a kid about sex is to let them get STD`s/pregnant and then make them deal with it.

It`s like lying, as long as you don`t get caught you`ll keep on doing it. Want kids to stop doing it? Let them get caught.

LillianDulci: ...there are still going to be kids who are going to have sex...

So because a few might we have to make it acceptable for the rest ? That is a fallacious argument. That`s like saying "There are still going to be drunk drivers, So we should just continue to let them drive."

It`s unacceptable for kids to be having sex before adulthood, It costs society in many ways. Pregnant teenage mothers, Children without fathers, Mothers on welfare because they never finished school, and more.

If it`s wrong for a teacher to have sex with a 12yr. old boy because he doesn`t have legal consent. Then it`s just as wrong for a 12-17yr. old boy to have sex with a 12-17yr. old girl because neither has legal consent. Get it now ?

    1)Education good.
    2) Having said that, abstinence only programs have never been shown to reduce the number of people who use condoms, as is often claimed. There is 0 negative effect of an abstinence only program (though there is extremely limited positive effect).

What this shows in part, is that the kids know about condoms either way, what the dutch system does is incorporate discussions about responsibilities and relationships. Not just "This is how you put a condom on".

    3) America has all kinds of sex ed.

    4) Generally, access to contraception, and abortion, has increased the sexual activity of those with access.

Umm... crakrjack, all of the downsides you just listed about kids having sex before adulthood can be prevented with condoms. Teens won`t become mothers, have fatherless children, and not finish school because they have children if they use condoms and don`t get pregnant. The fact is that underage sex exists, and if we can`t stop it we might as well make it safe.

VV MrBowserPuff, the groups most likely to get teen pregnancies are the groups least likely to use condoms.

From the article (paraphrased) "In 1999, the UK government pledged to halve the teenage conception rate within 10 years... it has clearly failed to make any significant impact."

That`s how well current sex-education has been doing, so perhaps trying something a little different might be a GOOD IDEA yes?

Also: A Canadian NDP Party MP wanted to lower the age of concent to 12 (for sex with adults) from the current (then) age of 14 which the Liberal Party have passed as LAW. Luckily the current Conservatives have raised it to 16...

I`m all for education, and I say put ALL the options on the table and let the children have a choice of what makes sense for them.

While it`s disturbing to me that kids are having sex at such a young age, telling them not to will not make them stop. Thus, we should do everything possible to make sure that they are at least safe.
This includes giving them access to contraception, and very thorough sex education.

I totally agree. I wasn`t thinking about sex when I was 12 but when I was babysitting 3 kids (7, 9, and 12) the 12 year old was telling me about how he had sex. Some kids are thinking about it and doing it at really young ages and it`s better to be safe than sorry

necrobitch: Some kids blossom earlier than others and some act on it. Can blame the media for milking the sex aspect for advertising, but even so some kids just do it because they know it feels good and it makes them feel `grown up`.

Frankly I`d rather they do this. It`s better than having a high school have to fund a daycare for their students (the second high school I attended had one) or go through all those adoption things to give the kid away. I mean it`s not really cool that 10 year olds are boinking, but at least with specially made condoms we can try to lessen teen pregnancies.

han5nah has a more then valid point.

And in all honesty, everything your trying to get them to stop seems to be minimaly effective. If this lowers STD and pregnancy rates, its a good thing, go for it.

Of course, you can still use education in conjunction. You`d want to be, but you know, in case education fails, lets hope they use one of these.

It wasn`t all that uncommon years ago (actually the norm) to have kids at a young age... Thats just the way our biological urges go. You can try to stop them doing the act, which probably wont work, or you can help them protect themselves.

Actually...America has quite a bit of sex-ed. I was in one in 5th grade, and again in 9th grade. Thankfully they didn`t act ignorant and actually taught us how to use things like condoms and what STD`s were out there. And honestly, I am glad for that class. It taught me it IS ok to have sex (Which it is since its natural) but at the same time it taught me how to not be a dumb ass and protect myself. Educating and providing the resources to stay safe are key. Not trying to tell kids "No, sex is bad don`t ever ever do it. Don`t even think about it." That isn`t going to get you anywhere.

Countless studies have shown that providing condoms does not make kids who weren`t having sex have sex. Instead, it just makes those that already have sex, do it in a safer way.

Countless studies also show that abstinence only education is as effective as no education about sex.
