No, this can`t be because everybody knows fire doesn`t exist. Photoshoppp. (note the sarcasm)

Actually it`s not gas that`s being burned. The ground itself is on fire. The same thing is going on in the area of the US where Pensylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio meet. It`s coal that is burning. Started the same way here too, huge gas fire and then the coal started. If I remember correctly, they say here in the States it`ll continue to burn for the next 200 years. I`d imagine it would be probably just as long there.

> Trust me, I`ve been there.

Of COURSE you`ve been there. There`s a billion-dollar natural gas mine that`s now on fire and totally useless. It`s OBVIOUS you`ve been there!

:-P

I saw this thru a link on the RT (Russia Today) website. It was pretty cool, tho they had a video clip as well.

Meanwhile the earth is getting a fraction smaller every day as all the gas is being let out.

It wouldn`t have exploded if the oxygen-to-combustible ratio wasn`t right. Hell, if there wasn`t any oxygen, it wouldn`t even burn.

those rocks or whatever have to be releasing the gas constantly for it to burn for so long... if it was just a pocket of gas it would have burnt up once. I`d say exploded but it depends on what gas...

Does this gas hurt the ozone? Hmm. Never heard Al Gore complain about it, so probably not. Why haven`t the found a way to cap in 35 years?

doof, that`s why we Exploration Geologists don`t trust subsurface engineers. Or as we prefer to call them, "Whinge-eners". They`re always whinging about lack of information... and in a frontier setting, the best we geoscientists is say: hey, we dunno. Might hit a shallow pocket of gas, might not.

Oh wow. Can you say "epic poor planning and problem solving"? I`d love to be a fly on the wall at that little brainstorming session:

Engineer 1: All right, guys, we have a problem. The natural gas well we were drilling into has become a big hole that is filled with toxic explosive gas!

E2: Aren`t they supposed to do that?

E1: Yes. Well, no, actually.

E3: We could drill a relief well nearby and cap the leaking one...

E2: Yeah! Then the metric crapload of money we spent drilling the first well can be recovered when the new well goes into production, plus all that gas will not be wasted by just flaring it off! We can salvage this situation!

E1: Nah. Let`s just ignite the whole thing. It`ll burn for just a few days and then we don`t have to worry about cleaning up the mess.

E2: But...

E3: Wait...

E1: No. We burn it. I`m just gonna go out there, light my Zippo and drop it in. Problem solved!

35 years later:

E2: It`s still burning!

E3: Yeah. Sucks.

E1: I sure miss my old Zippo.

From the small amount of research I did, They apparently drilled through a cavern (and didn`t know it?) and then struck a pocket of hydrogen sulfide and natural gas (among other deadly gases). The weight of the drilling rig then caused it to start sinking into the ground, Because it was sitting over a sinkhole. The gas started to collect in the cavern and they abandoned the rig. Normally a relief well would`ve been drilled a safe distance away and the old hole plugged up. Instead they decided to light it on fire so the hydrogen sulfide wouldn`t kill people.

Damn you internets. Every time I think I`m doing something on my own, the hive mind does the same damn thing.
Take this for example: Just two days ago I was reading up on the Silent Hill 2 movie in the works, which reminded me of Centralia, PA. Since we have this big oil disaster thing going on in the gulf, i thought I would show that other man-made mistake to my BF (Centralia) because it`s rather interesting.
A few clicks here and there, and I ended up at a video showing a cluseup of the "Door to Hell" as well as some pictures.
Fast foward to today...and bamn, links to the Door to Hell on IAB.
Friggin Hive mind... -_-
