I can`t tell you how many times I`ve seen this, you see this more in construction zones than anything else, and I hate it when these people -force- themselves into a gap ten inches long, in front of you, and then wave like they`re trying to be polite. At this time I get just far enough away from them for my headlights to shine right into their rear window, and then hit my brights, daytime or not.

Unfortunately I see a lot of drivers who pull this stunt - What I`d like to see is their license revoked for being the cause of unnecessary traffic jams.

hmm, i understand if it happens when you are in a rush then its your own fault, but what about when you dont know you have to turn and suddenly you figure it out and are past the end of the line of cars, i dont see whats wrong with being nice enough to let some one in, i do it myself, unless this guy looks like hes trying to beat the line...

Also if your trying to get in my lane from the left hand side and you hit me while im stopped or barely going 10 mph, 90% of the time the insurance company will fault the person who is merging into the lane,

This just happened to me a few months back, the insurance guy i talked with basically said that the guy merging is F***ed and i got paid 3500$ for a small paint scrape and dent on my 71 benz that i took care of myself. So think people before you do something like this.

Too all the people saying "Ohh i do this all the time because im in a rush or something" Maybe you should try leaving 15-25 minutes earlier so you dont have to rush..

To Mcfudge "I do that all the time, its either let me the FCK IN, or smash up your precious beamer."

Your part of the reason we have congestion in the first place b/c your such an impatient person and just HAVE to get there and push someone out of the way you make them stop which makes the person behind them slow down or stop. Thus you create a wave of stops which makes traffic more of a pain.

And for anyone who doesnt know what im talking about in the state of maryland (and other states of the US) your allowed to make a right turn on a red light as long as theirs no oncoming traffic.

Male 1,193
My biggest issue is when there`s a red light where you can turn right on anyways except the people in front of you are gonna go straight and you cant get around them. where i live my route to work and school consists many of said right turns.

"Yeah, I had that situation once. `Cept I was in my Audi TT Coupe and he was in a 15 year old Peugeot sh*tbox. "

same happened to me (sort of), me in my 5-series him in a 1960`s ford pickup (rusted, not painted). sure enough he hit me, I being sensible moved out of the way so traffic could flow (and this wouldn`t happen to others) he left his car in the middle of the road (idiot). had 3-4 people come by and gave me witness statements, took pictures, cops never showed. his insurance shelled out $5000 (repair and rental) after dicking me around for 2 months.

and you become "effing crazy idiot" when you try to turn the corner from the only forward lane

or when you go strait and cut through the gas station on the right and then merge with traffic from there

both of these are very illegal and stupid, do not attempt

""Don`t know how it is on the US side - but over here, if I lean on you and you run into me - best you`ll get is 50/50."

Wrong, if you change lanes and run into someone, you are at fault, even if they are purposefully keeping level with you - the deciding factor is who has crossed the white line."

Not if one person cuts the white line in front and you willfully run into the back of him.

Keeping pace is fine, a smart press on driver will get you to speed up to make a gap behind...

"Doesn`t the blame lie on whoever hit the other person? No matter the situation?"

Not quite - if the person comes into your space and you can`t phsyically brake intime then its not your fault - but for insurance purposes that might not be so easy to prove. Even if it their fault its not worth the hassle for a point of principle.

Joanielspeak is the voice of reason on this one - see below...

yeah you`re allowed to change lanes as much as you want to but when you drive into another car, when you`re the one turning into their lane, it`s your fault.

Nope. If there`s a cut white line in the middle of the road, you`re allowed to change lanes as much as you want. I just took the driving test, and you`re from Europe so don`t be commenting on the American traffic law.

Nope, I was watching a cop show and they said you should just let the person over.

I do this often, not to be rude but because i`m in a rush and not trying to wait behind stand still traffic. But I HATE when other people do it. hahah

The odds of merging in this situation are proportional to the $ value of the car getting cut off divided by the $ value of the car trying to merge.

So our city decided to put in a merge lane at an intersection. I suppose it was meant for people turning right that didn`t want to wait for the long line of traffic to go by at 40mph. The problem is is that before you get to that intersection it`s a two lane road at 40mph. Even before you get to the intersection you can see the merge lane from hill you go down.

Yet for some reason non-nice individuals think it`s alright to speed down the hill and cut off the line that has formed on the left. I`ve seen other people speed up to make the other people slow down. So I know I`m not the only one that gets pissed. >:(

I`d let him over because I am more of a defensive driver and I don`t want to get into an accident when he crowds me. Yea, he`s a douche, but it`s not worth a potential accident to "prove a point" to no one. I am not looking for reasons to be angry at other drivers. I guess I just don`t care enough to get all worked up about it. Road rage doesn`t rule my driving life.

Yea it pisses me off but if I focus more an being a safer driver, myself, and not focus on how crappy other drivers are, I can save myself a lot of pain and frustration, and I have saved myself from a few accidents as well.

These people who cut don`t bother me nearly as much as the people who rear-end me at stop lights because they are texting... broke off my damn license plate...

Cars were lined up for over a mile in the right lane, and this Texan passed the entire line on the left. We got up to the bottleneck about 20 minutes later, and he was still sitting there signalling to get in. We honked and flipped him off, just like everybody else that he passed. For all I know, he`s still sitting there! LOL, f*** `im!"

Say it is the states and I`m in a hurry to get to my next coke deal, what`s to stop me shooting you?

Male 2,220
A variant of this is the merge-in-turn end of dual carriageways in the UK. You get mile long queues in the `slow` lane with lots of righteous indignation when cars pass by and try and merge in the last 400 yards. Thing is - its the people insisting on queueing in the slow lane who are being stupid. You`re pushing the queue twice as far back as it should be! Of course people are going to pass you!
[ Note someone who trys to merge in the last 50 yards at 70mph is also an idiot ]

Anyway lighten up people, you`re shortening you`re life by getting het up about it, and forcing confrontations - not wise - I know - I`ve swapped paint with a few people over the years.

Lemmingboy15 you`re 100% correct... I moved here to Texas about a year ago and the drivers are the worst I have ever seen, they will pass you on the right side of the road like it is a lane, they cut in front of everyone constantly and never use their signals, and no drivers aren`t this bad everywhere lol...

yea i have people try that every day after school...i absolutley will not let you in, you can try to merge in on me, but all you will do is wreck both our cars (buying mine). sometimes if im generous, ill let people from the otherside on since they really had no opportunity to get in that lane. just dont assume that ill let you in, thats where the problem is.

Yes, this. I hate them even more now that I have my 335; it`s forced me to be uncomfortably tolerant :P

I will, however, gleefully straddle the line in the case of merging highway lanes where I`m not going to be blocking other traffic...

If there are gaps and you go for it that`s one thing, but the guys who fly past just to sit there at the front and try to edge their nose in? Die.

except that walking around old people in a hallway doesn`t potentially cost you a car and thousands of dollars if they hit you.

Unless it`s a millionaire.

Also, unless the people in line are going reasonably below the speed limit, there`s no reason to actually speed to get in the way.

first of all i mentioned my POS tiburon because i was saying i drive a crappy car not some "camaro my dad bought me"

second, I`m driving home from work during rush hour. so driving like an "asshat" doesn`t shave seconds, it shaves a good 10-15 minutes.

third, if it were a game of need for speed i`d complain that all the race tracks were nothing but interstate 275 twice a day 5 days a week.

fourth, my insurance isn`t bad at all because i don`t have any accidents on my record, i`m married and i`ve been driving for over 10 years now.

ForAllTheSin, get your head out your arse with your "I can drive with precision and you can`t" in your "POS Hyundai Tiburon". I don`t care who you think you are, there is no excuse for driving like a tw*t.

Life isn`t a game of Need For Speed Underground. Impatient asshats are the ones who get in accidents, huge self-confidence or not. Impatient asshats your age or younger are the reason that (in the UK at least) insuring a car for a young driver is an utter nightmare and young drivers in general have a bad image.

Me? I am a car enthusiast before anything else. I hugely enjoy driving, even in my slightly underpowered Grande Punto. However, I don`t act recklessly to shave a few tenths off my journey home, and frown upon those who do, just like everyone else does. It just isn`t necessary. I know the roads near where I live that I can enjoy myself on (luckily there are many in South/West Berkshire) and get it out of my system there.

As others have stated, just because you can control your vehicle that well, doesn`t mean others can. Also, life isn`t a race about who`s home first, or wherever you`re going. You ARE being a road hazard and you`re endangering a lot of people`s lives. My husband is probably the best driver I know, and would most likely out-drive you. This doesn`t mean he`s a total douche in traffic, like you. Someday you`re gonna end up in a really bad car crash, either because of your stupid and douchefaggy behaviour or because someone LIKE you does what you do and OOPS the road was a little more slippery/that other driver went a little bit faster/insert any situation here that involves you and someone else on the road and something you just can`t calculate to the point of absolute certainty. Have fun in the hospital, and I hope for your sake that you don`t end up killing someone else while you`re at it.

And so what if they do, wow it added a couple seconds to your commute. Your not in line to buy tickets to your favorite show and by them getting in front of you they got the best seats. Lighten up people. If there were no idiots allowing huge gaps by not paying attention this could never occur. fact is it does and SOME of us take advantage of that. So ForAllThSin, you think it`s amazing when people risk the lives of everyone around them just because they wanted to get somewhere 2 seconds faster than they would have otherwise? You know, some people are absolutely great drivers BECAUSE they are careful and not reckless. Simply because you can barely get away with something without causing an accident doesn`t mean you should do it. Let me guess, you`re 16 years old and your parents just bought you a Camero so you`re ALWAYS the best driver on the road! And yes, I see that you claim to be 18-29, but I know that`s bullpoo.

@shnard-dog

why am i an A-hole?
just because i can control my vehicle with precision and you get scared to even merge into traffic?

i`m not about to wait 5 minutes in a long line of people turning when most the time i can ride along side it, wait for that opening where someone is slow off the break and jump in line right there. it doesn`t change the flow of traffic at all. unless i pull in front of you and you pee your panties because you got scared of a real man who can drive

Don`t misread the turning lane signs?

The ones that piss me off are the guys that get into the right-hand turn lane at red lights, so they can pass everyone in the actual driving lanes when the light turns green. This is especially galling when there are five or more cars all trying to do it at the same time.

"@ajd121: It`s probably a good thing that we don`t live anywhere near each other because if you ever did that to me I would ram your ass into oncoming traffic. you sir are a real prick."

That`s probably a good thing for you then

"Those people that drive too slowly (in this situation) are doing so because a-holes like you are causing everything to slow down by trying to sneak in at the last second. If you got in line like everyone else things would run more smoothly."

Most people in line waiting aren`t even paying attention I can sneak in before they even notice the only time I`m costing is the time it costs them to drive the length of my car.

If you see some a-hole do this - don`t let him in.
Better yet, follow him and then knife his tires.

"To all the people who do this: What about the people behind you who you are making wait while you sit there hoping someone will let you in. That`s who you really piss off."

I always leave enough room for people to pass me on my left.

"You are not special, and you are not a beautiful and unique snowflake - you should wait in line like everybody else. You are by definition selfish."

That`s great and all but I get home five minutes faster than you.

Maybe they did not realize it was the street that needed to turn on till it was too late. Maybe they were from out of town. Would it kill you just to let them in?

To all the people who do this: What about the people behind you who you are making wait while you sit there hoping someone will let you in. That`s who you really piss off. Adding one car to the right turn lane isn`t a big deal. Once you are in the lane you aren`t causing much more wait. It`s all the time sitting there waiting to get into the lane where you hold up EVERY car behind you that makes you a true jerk.

I never let you tards in.

Also Mp3Daddy says: "And how come there is never a cop around when this happens?"
Answer: Because its not illegal. Theres a dotted white line there meaning the fellow can change lanes (so long as he dosn`t do it at the end of the road and in the intersection).

@ajd121: You have entitlement issues and shortsightedness. Nobody likes traffic. Everybody else is patiently waiting their turn. What makes you think the rules do not apply to you. If everybody did what you did it would be a clusterf*ck for the people legitimately going in the lane you`re sneaking up in.

You are not special, and you are not a beautiful and unique snowflake - you should wait in line like everybody else. You are by definition selfish.

You know what is fun? Baiting people like that with a big open space in front of your car, and then closing it when they race to get in the spot.

I have successfully made one of these jerks go over the Bay Bridge to San Francisco when they were trying to do exactly this. Sucker!

"I`ll be thinking about THAT while I`m passing you laughing that nobody will let you in."

There is always some rube that will let me in, and until they stop letting me in I will continue t do it while everyone else waits. I hate traffic.

Too true.

Wimp.

Shouldn`t filter until the turn, or better still, until oncoming traffic after the turn.

You`ve got to make some ground to overtake the old bat causing the jam after all.
