Poor little thing ( It IS dead and stillborn I assume)- however, still fairly amazing, I wonder how far it was, elephants gestate for a pretty long time don`t they.

Of course I had to go and RUIN the moment by reading teh comments....So here goes

Realy people....a penis....Really?

From what I see, there really is a fresh grave dug out behind the people....

A woman with manicured nails holding the thing....wonder if it was foind on the side of the road during some kind of safari...Perhaps still clinging to life as all fo the exposed nerves scream for it to just DIE!!!

Ok Ive had a rough night...Its a premee, its dead...It might be an hour old....but its about 5 months to early

I agree w/ Pinxx... This is no "hour-old elephant". Its definitely a miscarriage. Newborn elephants look just like small versions of their parents.

yeah baby elephants are like 77-113 kg, with a height of about 91 cm at the shoulder ... or for you Americans 170-250 lbs and about 3 feet tall

Sadly it looks like a stillborn elephant. :-(

Normal birth weight is over 200lbs, I believe.

As sherrychick stated, that is not a newborn. Newborn elephants are a lot bigger than that.

And, Scr1bblz, I believe that is where the fetus was attached to the umbilical cord. . .

Baby elephants weight around 100 kg at birth, which means the baby elephant is minimum 1 meter tall.

Agree w/ entwife. There is no possible way that`s a newborn. If I had to guess, it`s probably about a mid-term miscarriage.
0
Reply
Female 536
Um....that`s not a newborn elephant. That is a (probably dead) elephant fetus.

Elephant pregnacies last 22 months and the babies weigh between 100-300 pounds at birth. This little guy didn`t make it that far :-(

It would be better if someone changed the title of this thread because it`s hugely misleading. I clicked expecting a cute picture of a baby elephant and instead I get a sad picture of a dead elephant foetus with a grave dug in the background.

I`m questioning whether it was a mistake. Elephants are a byword for huge size - who would think that they were born so small? A newborn elephant is the size of a small pony. Also, it`s obviously nowhere near developed enough. Hour-old calves can walk with the herd.

Who is ignorant/stupid enough to think that is an "hour-old elephant." Clearly it is a fetus and it`s definitely going to die. According to the San Diego Zoo website, African elephants are 198 to 264 pounds at birth, with Asian elephants being 110 to 250 pounds at birth. This picture is horrifying.

Aw, jeez. Poor little thing must be dead. A newborn elephant is much larger and much more physically developed; they stay in the womb for two freaking years, after all.

This made me really sad. I absolutely love elephants. D:
