OK, I-A-B, as you know, some states allow people with death sentences how they die. This guy is going out old school...

"He was sentenced to death in 1985, but legal proceedings have dragged on since then."

25 years, not bad for the legal department. I mean, he`s only a convicted killer and all.

Yeah I know feiku. I was just trying to say to ten_speed that putting an "express lane" to execution is not really the best way to go about it. Just because DNA evidence exists, it`s not a clear case of "Oh that proves he was there and must have done it, let`s put him to death now".

moefreak- I watch forensic files (the real-life version of CSI) and while CSI is a huge exaggeration of how things proceed in real life, methods of gathering forensic evidence and DNA evidence have improved GREATLY. It`s not like they`ll find a random hair and go "IT`S THEM". It`s only if the person had some sort of connection to the victim and if the hair would be unusual at the scene had it gotten there any other way.

ten_speed, you`ve been watching too much CSI methinks. People have a completely twisted perception nowadays about how often any viable DNA evidence is available in crimes. For example, in CSI they often say "your hair was found in this persons house, how do you explain that". Perhaps the hair was stuck on someone`s shoe, and thus travelled to your house. How many hairs do you think you have from random people in your house right now? The trouble is, juries nowadays are unwilling to find someone guilty unless there is DNA evidence, because they think that`s the only way to know for sure that someone is guilty. Most often there is no DNA evidence.

Problem with the death penalty is it`s not used nearly enough. The rest of the country should follow Texes` lead and put in an express lane to it.
On a more serious note however; the death penalty should be used more often with less appeals. We have DNA and all that other nifty stuff that doesn`t lie. It`s just the way we collect our evidence and such that`s messed up not the system.

"I also always wondered if it would be a good idea to kill people on death row the way they killed their victims."

have the punishment fit the crime... I can see the sense in that but it`d probably be a little impractical.
And I think it was the ancient greeks who thought that up too - if someone burnt a house down, killing the people inside they were burnt to death.

And how about Jeremy Clarkson with a koenigsegg

"Crushed pelvises!"
*all look horrified, Fry and Zapp alternating to grins*

I think that`d probably be quite painful... death by snoo snoo from women twice your size...

"if you have capital punishment it should be as painless as possible, I assume a bullet in the brain is as good as it gets."

I dunno, I`d probably pick lethal injection - isn`t that an anaesthetic then something lethal? That way the only pain you have is the first needle going in then you go to sleep and don`t wake up

what does his mormon heritage have to do with wanting a firing squad? pretty sure mormon heritage has more to do with NOT killing people. just seems weird that he said that, you know?

I`m pretty sure a firing squad aim for the heart not the brain. One guy has a blank but no one knows who.

Apparently not everyone is on the up and up about how exactly a firing squad works...to avoid the guilt of the shooters that is...here is a hint, not everyone has a real bullet.

Well- it is his choice, if you have capital punishment it should be as painless as possible, I assume a bullet in the brain is as good as it gets. The fact that capital punishment is obscene may be an argument for another day!

Capital punishment is such a travesty anyway. Inhumane and a complete waste of money and resources. But if I had to be executed, I wouldn`t mind a firing squad. As long as the people shooting me are excellent shots.

Let me get this straight, he killed a lawyer and they aren`t building a theme park in his honor? Being a recent/former Florida resident, I`d choose Ol` Sparky, because lethal injection is for pussies, and they don`t offer firing squads or guillotines. What they should offer is the "Muffin Monster" from `30 days of night`.HELL YEAH! Just toss `em in! I`d do a swan dive! EEF-`em!

Thoughts?

I kind of feel bad for the officers who have to shoot him. It`s a much more direct way of executing someone than hanging him or giving him a lethal injection. You have to look at this fellow standing there unarmed and pull a trigger in cold blood. Ick.

the housing and feeding of the prisoners isnt what makes death row so expensive, its all the appeals and court fees because you can appeal as many times a you want, most times its actually cheaper for life in prison, and in my opinion i think life in prison is worse, as long as it isnt at one of the pansy prisons that give you nice cells and tvs and crap

prisons have strange ways if operating anymore
i will never understand why its okay to kill someone for killing someone. i ve heard because they cant keep 5 million murders in prison, theres no room. the fix to that would be to quit arresting people and giving them years of prison time for possesion charges...its just stupid and wastes our money

I`ve heard of one other person selecting a firing squad years ago, I am wondering how quick it would be to die providing they hit you in a vital area. I mean if it is quick might be a good choice,
I also always wondered if it would be a good idea to kill people on death row the way they killed their victims.

Choosing the method of death reminded me of Monty Python`s `The Meaning Of Life` when the guy is chased off a cliff to his deathby topless women in helmets :D

If I could choose any method of death I might choose to be given a very expensive supercar or race car to crash spectacularly on a twisty stretch of road or a track. What if I don`t die? A big remote-controlled bomb attatched to the car goes off. Or I could re-enact the end of Vanishing Point.

But I don`t think I could take the knowledge of knowing when and how I were to die.

I really don`t see the point in this. Killing him 25 years after his crime fulfils none of the aims of punishment apart from the two bullpoo ones (vindication and retribution).

""If I had to choose, I would prefer to die drinking a cup of poison hemlock"

Wouldn`t that hurt like hell? I would guess the body would be trying to reject that and the pain would be immense. Or is it like a sedative-type of poison and it shuts everything down?"

Its more like the second kind, It was what Socrates drank when he was sentenced to death and give him enough time to talk about the soul and the after life with his disciples before dying

@fancylady--Harsh! but I think I agree...While I have some problems with the death penalty (i.e. accidentally killing people who are innocent), if there is no doubt at all, then I think the greater injustice is the amount of taxpayer money going into housing, feeding, and possibly schooling a murderer for the rest of his life...:\

They should fill each rifle with as much ammo as it will hold... and give the executioners an extra box of ammo too. Then, they could just shoot at non-vital areas of the bad-guy first, drink a few beers and laugh it up, then, as they get lower on ammo, and more drunk, they could start taking bets on who can get the closest to his heart while wearing a blindfold - even the killer could get in on the bet. I`d like to see the process last an hour or two.

In a firing squad they ,mix up blanks and live bullets so no one knows who`s doing it technically unless you aim at a strange spot.
