Yeah, you know what I find "classy?" I find it "classy" when you guys rip on a woman who has to resort to selling her body for food. That`s super "classy." Also, funny no one is mentioning that the guy got away without even a slap on the wrist. Of course, it`s entirely the woman`s fault for "choosing" to trade sex for food. It`s not like she`s poor or anything...Yeah, you guys are "classy" alright.

No one HAS to resort to prostitution to survive. It`s a choice people sometimes make when they can`t make ends meet, but a choice nonetheless. She probably could have gone to a homeless shelter instead (as long as she could have stayed clean).

@Depthofcuz - There`s a difference between having sex purely because there`s no other way to get food, and having sex because someone offered food in return. A big, BIG difference. This isn`t Sudan or Ethopia. This happened in America.

The prostitute is a slut with no standards and therefore we`re perfectly justified to look down and laugh at her. End.

Sudan and Ethiopia are NOT the only countries that have people who can`t afford to eat. America has people who live hand-to-mouth, too.
"Choice" is a completely BS term in this case. I`m sure she has a multitude of options she can choose from (that`s sarcasm, in case you missed it).
Right, she could go to a homeless shelter...If she was homeless, meaning she had NOWHERE ELSE TO GO. Many sex trade workers have homes, but without prostitution, would be homeless and therefore worse off. No one "helps" women like this. Worse still, they are blamed under prostitution laws. Forget the fact that the men who "buy" them get away scot-free...It`s these "sluts" that are the REAL problem, and all under the notion that we`re concerned with "accountability." It`s not funny to me. I could say nothing, or I could say something. I`ll choose the latter.

If you own it, you have a right to rent it out. The shame for being a prostitute is the fact that it is a very dangerous job with no social standing. Many women end up working to support drug habits and can find no way out of a life that is demeaning and erodes the last vestiges of self worth they have. Prostitutes are human, some have made a concious choice to work in a profitable job - they try to minimise the risk and stay healthy, others are not so lucky. why not respect the lucky ones and try to make sure the unlucky have a way out. Sex sells- it has always sold, get over it.

madduck, please tell me where you are getting your information. How many sex trade workers do you know or have you worked with? Which ones of these that you know have "chosen" to work in a "profitable" job where they are likely to be beaten, raped (if you even BELIEVE a prostitute can be raped), or murdered?
I don`t think I will get over it, thanks. I have considered the suggestion, and I think I`ll keep on mouthing off on this one. It`s repulsive to me that people don`t want to get uncomfortable about this. Women are essentially being groomed into this "occupation" that makes them a commodity, a non human being, and now you tell me to "get over it?" Why don`t you tell that to the faces of the women that are actually doing this work...or would that make you uncomfortable?

Most of the posts on here are posted because of their potential to elicit some good jokes. Prostitution is bad, but you`re not going to find a solution in a website that prevents boredom.

dotrom, I couldn`t agree more. It`s so sad that the women are being arrested for this and the doucheballoons that pay for it not only get away without a lick, but often get sympathy, too. "He was having troubles with the wife at home." Boo-effing-hoo.

And Brassbull, why would I shut up about things that piss me off? That makes no sense. I`m not telling anyone to shut up...So why should I change my mind or shut my trap if it makes me angry when people make fun of prostitutes? I`m not a prostitute, so it`s not technically "personal," but there is a lot of poo that happens that I get pissed off about on principle. I won`t apologize or back down for having those principles.

Fining them both would seem fairer (being broke is not considered a valid defence for breaking the law), but the law is using the "punish the supplier" model. Most people agree with that model with other laws, e.g. punish drug dealers and not their customers.

Being pissed off isn`t going to hurt me or anyone else.

It hurts your credibility. Take, for example, your reply to Madduck. Did you even read their post before ranting at it? Your reply has no relevance to their post. You look like a raving fanatic who`s utterly dedicated to leaping down the throat of anyone who isn`t as fanatical, regardless of their position, and who has a tenuous grasp on reality.

You`re undermining yourself by raving away any credibility. So if you do actually care about what really happens and you`re not just seeking power through an issue, you are hurting yourself.

I have known sex workers who chose the work. I used to live in a "red light" area of a city - some of them were my neighbours. I`ve known a couple of people who quit the job I work in in order to become a sex worker. They said it was a better job. Of course, you`re free to order them to change their minds to suit you, and I`m sure you`d do

"Sudan and Ethiopia are NOT the only countries that have people who can`t afford to eat. America has people who live hand-to-mouth, too."

Yeah, it`s interesting that many of these people seem to be able to afford cigarettes and booze, yet apparently have a hard time feeding themselves. Considering how ridiculously cheap fast food is, not even the homeless people in America should be going hungry, nor, from the looks of them, do they seem to.

I won`t pretend that I know what it`s like for many women who choose to go into this line of work, but there must be some kind of more respectable, safe job that they could find. I`d much rather work my ass off at multiple minimum wage jobs and be on welfare than go into a profession as degrading and revolting to me as prostitution.

Well, it is the prostitutes who are providing an illegal service. They`re the ones roaming the streets at night. You can`t necessarily track down and persecute all the clients. But I agree that the prostitutes are not the only real problem; it`s a lot more complex. Prostitution is a societal issue that has been with us throughout history and isn`t likely to go away anytime soon.

So anger hurts a person`s credibility? Being passionate about something that gets women killed all the effing time all over the world hurts my credibility?

If that`s fanaticism, then I think we need more of that. I`ll take it over calmly ushering women to their deaths any frickin day of the week.

I`m not ordering anyone to change their minds, least of all the women who do the work. I don`t agree with the decriminalization of prostitution, but I support the sex trade workers because it`s the workers who are put in harm`s way when it is legal or illegal. I won`t mock them or degrade them with cruel jokes aimed at obscuring their lack of choice.

By the way, who`s judging my credibility? You? How exactly has your credibility been established? You lived in the red light district? So is that like someone who lives next door to a gay person knowing what it`s like to be gay? Have you worked with prostitutes? Have you actually asked them why or how they got into it?

So anger hurts a person`s credibility? Being passionate about something that gets women killed all the effing time all over the world hurts my credibility?

Your relentless spewing of propaganda in place of reason hurts your credibility.

You accept only the most extreme scenarios as the only possible things that can ever exist anywhere. For example, Madduck referred to the possibility of some people choosing sex work in addition to explicit statements about the bad side of it and you went raving off at them because they had acknowledged the reality of the existence of anything other than worst case scenarios.

You`re a fanatic. You have no credibility. I`m only replying because I have some time to waste - you will never see anything other than your own determination to see only the worst.

I think it`s a shame that prostitutes will continue to suffer because people like you lobby to deny them the protection of legality, but I can`t do

Right, now the rhetoric comes in...I get angry at the treatment of prostitutes and I`m the one doing the harm. Sure...and you accuse me of using propaganda.

You may think they are worst case scenarios, but they are much more commonplace than most people think. That`s not out of ignorance, truly. These things are ridiculously underreported and no one talks about them. That was really my primary motivation for discussing it. I honestly don`t have time for this, but I still think it`s important enough to make time. I don`t expect it would be important to other people. I`m not surprised.

How is there something wrong with feeling passionate about an issue? The last time I checked, no one was dead because I ranted about something. I really don`t think I`m that influential. I also don`t think I`m so important as to prevent legalization of prostitution in one fell swoop on IAB.

It`s amazing when it`s put into this perspective. Having sex for chips illegal? Don`t lots of women have sex for steak dinners? I`m not saying it`s right or wrong, but it`s all labelling. Arrested for having sex for chips, that`s just a lot of wasted tax money.

Ok- I went to bed, so delayed answer- I have two friends who chose to work as prostitutes. One who needed to support a child, one to finance her education. They were incredibly lucky- I did point out the LUCK part. They worked, in effect, for an agency, the money was good- it is not a job for the faint hearted. I also pointed out that many women are not so lucky- they don`t have a choice. The fact that it is a job with huge risks does not mean anyone should treat these women as less than human- those who are not in it by choice means they should ( as I said) be helped and supported- not ridiculed and fined. We won`t make the sex trade go away by treating the workers like criminals. Of course prostitutes can be raped- which is wrong- but how often does the law protect them? The point I was trying to make is just that- just because some people have a moral issue with sex for money should not mean that we treat people in that trade as undeserving of legal protection.

To cont..... this is a very sad piece to read. Especially as she was fined. But the gender politics is a whole issue we don`t have space for here.Suffice it to say- I don`t think the moral issue is with the job- but with the way we treat the workers.

Prostitution in and of itself is not wrong. It is legal under USA federal law. Making it legal would make the government huge amounts of revenue, girls would be safer, pimps would slowly disappear, the pros go on and on.

I find it so sad that so many women and children are treated as objects to supply a trade that has been around for millenia- they need our help and support and the full protection of the law. When we imprison and fine women who are victims and refuse to admit that what they are doing is not a crime- but that what is being done to them by others IS.

...so, let me get this right, she`s so poor she rents herself out for food... so the court give her a massive FINE!? I actually think a little jail time would have been more apt, here. at least she would get a meal and she wouldn`t starve because she has to pay over a grand in fines.
