I TL;DR`d the former posts, so I hope this hasn`t already been stated...
I wonder how many `94 Accords were actually made. Cause if you think about it, even if 58% were recovered and returned, there are still (over the course of 16ish years) SOME Accords either getting stolen more than once (possible) or getting stolen from the thieves themselves (possible). That`s kind of a funny thing. That or these infographics are just tarded. Just saying.

I bet the stolen airbag market goes to supply people who`ve had their airbags stolen.

I`m a mechanic, and I`ll vouch for the cost of the airbags. Some basic passenger side bags can go for as little as $600. But there are some airbags on the driver side that will have the horn(and sometimes other functions) built in, and will go upwards of $1300.

There were problems here in south Florida with shop removing airbags and just using a resistor across the connector.

People were also climbing underneath pickup trucks with a Sawzall, cutting out the cats, and selling them for $100.

Well the most common stolen cars bit is not surprising-they all rank among the most popular cars in the US so it follows they will be the most stolen.

Watching program about Drugs last night, Phoenix has the world`s highest kidnap rate outside of Mexico City - just over one person every day on average.

"The Airbag thing really puzzled me. I understand how, but why?"

Demand. Since buying new airbags costs $1000 or even more, selling them for $150-$200 incites people to buy them more.

Replacement airbags cost more than most high-end speaker systems. They cost almost as much as a used transmission or a semi-decent engine.

And without airbags, your blue-book value of your car decreases significantly.

I can`t look past the fact that they used a 96-98 Civic picture trying to pass it off as a 95 Civic...

Oddly enough, my home is in Elmira, NY. I`ve never heard of cars being stolen, but I thought that was just normal xD.

True story:
My brother had a `94 or `95 accord.
It was stolen, but thankfully they just drove it around for awhile, took the radio, and gave it back.

What matters is the number stolen as a percentage of the number that exist. Of course a lot of F-150s are stolen -- F-150s outnumber each of the other brands. Also, one-third of thefts occurring in CA and TX isn`t remarkable -- 20% of Americans live in those two states.
