I love the way that these mongooses aren`t looking at the snake in fear, but with an expression of "MMMmmmm... foooood."

Lionhart: "Not a pointless point to ponder at all, actually, and the simple answer is to look at the root of the word. Words that came from Greek, for example, such as hippopotamus, become hippopotamuses, whereas Latin-derived words such as octopus, become octopi."

Mongoose is an English-ized version of the Indian word "mangus." So it doesn`t really follow any traditional rules. I looked it up.

He might not win, but he`ll try to take out as many as he can before he goes down.

Not a pointless point to ponder at all, actually, and the simple answer is to look at the root of the word. Words that came from Greek, for example, such as hippopotamus, become hippopotamuses, whereas Latin-derived words such as octopus, become octopi.

Of course d3, but not much stranger than mooses or plural goose.

It sounds weird only because we are accustomed to hearing the words as they are acceptably pronounced.

That in and of itself does not explain the absence of a singular rule to bind the plural format of an `oose` suffix. (Though surely there are some etymological explanations for the disparities, I`m just too lazy to find them.)

Besides, the question WAS pretty pointless.

Pointless questions to ponder:

Why is the plural form of goose, geese?

Why is the plural form of moose, moose?

And

Why is the plural form of mongoose, mongooses?

A meerkat is a type of mongoose but these are what people classically refer to as a mongoose when they mean the one that eats cobras.

Cobras strike downwards, Unlike a Rattlesnake that can strike upwards. Mongoose know this, They are able to jump up out of the way and then crash down on top of the cobra`s head and kill them.

A Mongoose vs. Rattlesnake fight would be unfair for the mongoose. It would jump, get bit by the rattlesnake, and die.
