::When the institution`s values include an official policy of covering up paedophilia and helping the criminals avoid facing the consequences of their crimes - no thanks, I`ll blame the institution AND the people.::

Those that are covering up are the very same less-than-savory types running things. It`s not congregation member Joe Smith`s fault. As far as he`s concerned, he`d like something done about it as well. Blame him all you want though. I`m sure that having that in common with the Westboro Baptist Church doesn`t bother you that much.

The typical child sex offender molests an average of 117 children, most of who do not report the offence. (National Institute of Mental Health, 1988).

Bentovim and colleagues from London`s Institute of Child Health identified 224 adult male victims of child sexual abuse whose childhood medical and social service records were available for review. They then searched arrest and prosecution records to determine their later criminal activity. Most of the subjects were 20 years old or older when the study was conducted.

Twenty-six of the 224 sex abuse victims (12%) later committed sexual offenses, and in almost all cases their victims were also children.

12% of 117 is 14. 1 Pedophile potentially produces 14 more. These statistics were only based on those that were caught, The researchers believe only half are ever caught and convicted So the actual amount may be much more.

Lion, 93% is way high. I suggest you read the "results in brief" section of this report.

Some notable quotes from it:

"These studies varied in terms of their estimates of the percentages of such offenders who had been abused, from zero to 79 percent"

"Respectively, about 7 percent and 26 percent of sexually abused children in these studies were found to be sex offenders as adults"

"The two prospective studies concluded that the majority of victims of sexual abuse during childhood did not become sex offenders as adults"

"the majority of retrospective studies concluded that most adult sex offenders against children did not report that they were sexually victimized as children"

"childhood sexual victimization would probably not be sufficient to explain adult s

No, a LARGE percentage of victims become abusers... roughly 93%.

CrakrJak: "It`s well known that people that were abused, Have a much higher tendency to become abusers themselves."

Keegan31: "The vast majority of victims of abuse never go on to hurt others."

But you see, you are both right. Abuse damages people. A small percentage of those damaged people are so badly damaged by it they become abusers themselves, thus making both of your statements correct.

CandyClown: "All arguments aside, I really like the flash animation and graphic design in this video."

Me too. It was simple but very eye-catching.

@CrakrJak "It`s well known that people that were abused, Have a much higher tendency to become abusers themselves."

People often see the fact that a large percentage of pedophiles were victims of abuse as an indicator of this. However this is a misconception. The vast majority of victims of abuse never go on to hurt others.

Please stop spreading this, as it is simply not true and could potentially hurt people who were already victims to begin with.

The Church isn`t the only order that does this.

If you were to go into corporations and world government....

Do not blame the institution and it`s values just because it is run by less than favorable people. Blame the people.

The current pope put the image of the church ahead of the lives of children. Both those that had been abused and those that hadn`t. This ex-hitler youth, ex chief-inquisitor should be tried for crimes against humanity.

I was a catholic

I am not a religious person by any means. But this video made me really sad.
Something that fills so many people`s lives with hope and fulfillment, full of evil and wrong. No religion is above the government. IMHO

GoSuPaul "Maybe it`s just the amount of access they have to these little boys as well as the amount of power they hold. It`s easy to keep a kid quiet when you`re an authority in his life of all things spiritual. `Shh...God told me that you were special, little one.`"

As the "Brother" (RC religious order) told my adolescent brother in seminary school "I had a vision of the Blessed Virgin Mother - she said it was ok to do"... add perversion here. The Roman Catholic church is the Whore of Babylon, fornicating with the kings of the earth, drunk on the blood of the saints. "Hate" and "Distaste" are not strong enough for what I feel for the lot of them. (And I still have family that belongs.)
The question no one seems to be asking is how the incidence of pedophelia in the church compares to pedophelia in the population at large. Without that, we can`t tell whether this problem is mostly real or mostly media hype.
The main problem isn`t the paedophilia - obviously that IS a huge problem, but it`s not the main one.
The REAL problem is the Catholic Church`s hand in covering up instances of abuse. They`re helping criminals get away with their crimes. This from people who claim absolute moral authority. The policy of secrecy was promoted by a man who now claims to be God`s representative on Earth.

It`s disgusting.

ElDavo: You propose a standard of perfection. Something that is always unattainable. If one really cares about eradicating pedophelia as opposed to using pedophelia to bash the church, then the comparison for which I asked is relevant.

@D3rAnG3d - I see what you`re saying, but really... of course there were laws about killing and murder. You create laws out of necessity. I don`t want my stuff stolen - I make a law to keep my stuff. I don`t like dying (I figure), no more killing! Those are known things that suck balls. I being a normal human don`t think that I need to prevent someone from wanting sex with a boy. Therefore, I don`t see the need to make a law against sodomizing young boys... UNLESS you see a need through rampant abuse. Bang! They create a law 2,000 years ago. Probably WAY before that though. The video wasn`t trying to inform you that they made laws back then for stuff... it`s just showing that it was a big enough problem in the Catholic Church alone. Also, Cathoplublicans can all die on their high horses.

Ant: No, nobody needs to ask that question. The fact is that church officials are supposed to have a moral compass, and there should be NO pedophilia in the church. It`s like saying "Yeah, Nixon broke the law, but that`s 1 out of 43 presidents". Well, the president is supposed to protect the laws, so it should be 0.
(Before you say it, I know there have been 44, but I`m counting Cleveland as only 1)

I agree with "vfr4" this is interesting, but obviously biased. There were laws against pedophilia dating back a thousand years?...No poo. Just like there were laws against steeling or murder. (>_>)

It`s well known that people that were abused, Have a much higher tendency to become abusers themselves. Since many of the abused boys were altar boys & choir boys, It`s no surprise that many of them also grew up to be priests themselves and become abusers. Thus, The cycle continues, grows, and begins again.

While I`m waiting for the Catholics to come in and make fools of themselves trying to defend this, the title is a little bit misleading. It wasn`t really a history of their sex scandals, it was more a history of their policy concerning sex scandals.

If a criminal can commit a crime knowing he will not be turned over to the authorities, that`s where he will go. Pope Rat-face is protecting these sick pedos, and fortunately for us, when he dies, we know where he will go.

I like the ideas behind these videos, but I cannot help but think that these are a) horrendously biased and b) motivated by one person`s view. I don`t think they are a clear representaion of what has been going on in whatever affair the video discusses.

Maybe it`s just the amount of access they have to these little boys as well as the amount of power they hold. It`s easy to keep a kid quiet when you`re an authority in his life of all things spiritual. `Shh...God told me that you were special, little one.`
