Yeah, it`s a pretty liberal point of view. Honestly though, is it wrong? I didn`t exactly see Teapartiers protesting the PATRIOT Act or the cost of the Iraq War, they were all for them (with a few exceptions, of course). I`ve never heard an explanation from a conservative that wasn`t based on "OH MY GOD OBAMA IS A SOCIALIST AND WASN`T BORN IN AMERICA!"

If you think that this post favors right-wing politics, you`re not reading it right. it`s called satire. The stick figures are the general public.

The joke here is that people took it lying down when we went to war for no good reason and spent billions upon billions of dollars that our government doesn`t have in order to save big companies from themselves. However, when the government actually did something good that helps people, the general public freaked out.

    This is VERY pro-liberal.

I`m neutral on the first two panels (don`t understand enough and don`t really care to) and hate the next two. I remember reading in my economics book that Canada has free health care for all but it really sucks over there (refusing patients due to limited budgeting and cheaper, lower-grade medicine etc.) so that`s why I hate the health care thing.

Here`s a joke that pretty much nails how I think of both parties:

    Republican or Democrat?

A woman in a hot air balloon realized she was lost. She lowered her altitude and spotted a man in a boat below. She shouted to him, "Excuse me, can you help me? I promised a friend I would meet him an hour ago, but I don`t know where I am." The man consulted his portable GPS and replied, "You`re in a hot air balloon, approximately 30 feet above a ground elevation of 2346 feet above sea level. You are at 31 degrees, 14.97 minutes north latitude and 100 degrees, 49.09 minutes west longitude... -continued

Personally, Im not happy with government spending my money in anyways that I do not want. I dont want to pay social security, why? to get it back when I turn 70? Why cant I just save my own money now?

I dont want to go to war, why do I have to pay for other countries problems? I have my own paid healthcare, why do I have to pay for others?

Just some of the questions I do have.

She rolled her eyes and said, "You must be a Republican." "I am,"replied the man. "How did you know?" "Well," answered the balloonist, everything you told me is technically correct, but I have no idea what to do with your information, and I`m still lost. Frankly, you`ve not been much help to me."

The man smiled and responded, "You must be a Democrat." "I am,"replied the balloonist. "How did you know?" "Well," said the man, "you don`t know where you are or where you`re going. You`ve risen to where you are, due to a large quantity of hot air. You made a promise that you have no idea how to keep, and you expect me to solve your problem. You`re in exactly the same position you were in before we met but, somehow, now it`s my fault."

btw, if anyone can prove to me that Canada`s health care is different from what I`ve read, please correct me and I`ll most likely change my stance o

Gomay, it is different than the things you`ve read. Or heard from Fox. We do not die waiting for surgeries any more than Americans do. In fact we die less waiting because we ALL get a chance at it. We have lower infant mortality and we DO count our infants the same way you do. We have a longer life expectancy. We also have a higher degree of harmony because we see eachother as equals, all deserving of care. The divide between rich and poor is bridged with universal care. That creates a better society. Violence goes down.
Our healthcare is cheaper per person, and the fact of the matter is that if people are denied immediate care it`s because someone that needs immediate care simply needs it more. In our system it is the DOCTORS that make the decisions, along with the patients. It is not the bureaucrat as FoxTV tells you. It is not the Insurer.
The doctor is motivated to help the patient. The insurer in motivated to bilk that patient.

    Hey Gomay,
I`m from Canada, our health care is freaking awesome! Had an emergency appendectomy about 3 weeks ago, did not have to get pre-approved, did not make a payment that I was later re-imbursed for. I was sick, so I went to the hospital, they gave me laproscopic surgery (because it has the least chance for infection and heals the fastest, but most definitely isnt the cheapest). No bills, 100% free.

hi2pi, the reason more of you aren`t dying on waiting lists is that thousands of Canadians come to the US for heath care. But if we f*** up our health care system like yours, where are you going to go then?

If you want a truly honest assessment of the Canadian health care system, ask Danny Williams.

Ollie, sure America has some of the best heathcare in the world. For those that can afford it. Danny Williams, who you cite an as example, is a multi-millionaire Canadian who can fly to Florida on his private jet and get that private healthcare.

However, surely what we`re talking about here is the heathcare of the entire population. Let`s look at some actual statistical facts (source OECD)

Canadians have a higher life expectancy and lower infant mortality rates than Americans (two of the most important indicators of a country`s heathcare standards). And Canadians pay about HALF of what Americans pay for the same service (average $3895 vs $7290 per capita expenditure on healthcare).

Now, would you like to address these actual statistics with some of your own, or are you going to throw around more anecdotes and nationalistic hyperbol

Oh God. It`s OldOllie in another universal healthcare debate.

Everybody: OldOllie says what his party thinks and doesn`t back it up with points. Then when you make an argument he repeats what he said before without even thinking about your comment and tosses "insults" like calling you a liberal.

Please don`t argue with him. It`s no better than feeding a troll.

And it`s not just Canada either... This is a telling graph. Again, based on OECD data.

See that big happy cluster up on the top left with better heathcare than the US at less than half the cost, having a big group hug? They ALL have universal heathcare. In fact the only countries on this graph that do not, are the US and Mexico.

Again, in your own time Ollie.

davy: Sorry I couldn`t get my warning in earlier. Ollie`s gonna say the same thing he did before using a few different words. He might cite some lame source, say things without backing them up with evidence, or try to discredit your source/statistics. Everything else be "personal" attacks. There is no chance he uses truly relevant statistics like the ones you did.

Really, what`s the problem with a public healh care system? Is it really ok that not eveyone can afford to pay for health care in the US? I`m from the UK, and while I`m not saying that the system is perfect, at least everyone who needs health care over here can get it when you need it. All you seem to be worred about is how it`s going to be funded correct?

The healthcare debate is not likely to be going anywhere as pretty mcuh everyone who are pro healthcare has it in their own country and those against healthcare dont have it.
I believe the basic point to the problem is not the actual healthcare but the cost.
Many americans "like" the their low taxes and are not ready to pay 40-60% taxes of their income in order to ensure a clean health. Because why should they pay if they dont need.
Im from denmark and our healthcare system works incredibly well. Im a construction engineering student and have free college, free healthcare, cheap housing and i get goverment funding (not scholarships) for studying. This is due to taxes. Personally im from a middelclass family so i cant use myself as an example but i study with several people have recently imigrated here because of the wars around the world. These people have less money and would otherwise not be able to afford said studies much less healthcare

In any case the low class americans who cant pay for basic healthcare, are not likely to be in here anyway. Sorry for wall of text ^^

"Many americans "like" the their low taxes and are not ready to pay 40-60% taxes of their income in order to ensure a clean health."

But they`re already paying it; just in health insurance rather than tax.

Do they seriously not understand that the taxes will go up, but their health insurance payments will disappear. And on balance, they might even end up paying less (no profit margain at the insurance company level).

Well, with a government-provided insurance system, like the British National Insurance, anyway.

And that`s not even on the table at the moment.

I love that Obama gets rid of the god damn public option to appease all these crazy republicans who`ve got no idea what the drat is going on in the first place -- then we pass health care reform WITHOUT the public option -- and they`re still screaming about socialism. We may as well have just included it, because it obviously makes no difference to those assclowns what`s actually happening in this country. They just need a reason to be angry at the black guy.

Heh. I`m really loving that so many Americans don`t understand socialised medicine. Watching them burst a gut is really funny.

Don`t ever ask them why the people in nations who provide such care are so eager to keep it. If they think about it too hard the`ll probably explode.

One thing I have to say on this topic of Obama Care is that the Democrats passed a bill that they themselves didn`t read. Nancy (I`m in the popular crowd now) Pelosi said,"Pass the bill to find out whats in the bill." Nobody could read that bill in so few short of days to actually understand whats in the thing. I couldn`t and wouldn`t put my trust in something that hasn`t even been read by the people who presented it as a new LAW in the country. It`s almost like a pilot skimming over a manual at flight school and then proclaiming that she/he is ready to fly a Boeing 747. If you knew that would you want to be a passenger on that flight? Why should I as an American citizen have a bill forced on me that has been barely glanced at by the people who passed it.

Wall poster spotted in NY NY, by IABer MrHyde:

You didn`t get mad when the Supreme Court stopped a legal recount and appointed a President.
You didn`t get mad when Cheney allowed Energy company officials to dictate energy policy.
You didn`t get mad when a covert CIA operative got outed.
You didn`t get mad when the Patriot Act got passed.
You didn`t get mad when we illegally invaded a country that posed no threat to us.
You didn`t get mad when we spent over 600 billion on said illegal war.
You didn`t get mad when over 10 billion dollars just disappeared in Iraq.
You didn`t get mad when you saw the Abu Grahib photos.
You didn`t get mad when the government was illegally wiretapping Americans.
You didn`t get mad when we let a major US city drown.
You didn`t get mad when the deficit hit the trillion dollar mark.
You finally got mad when the government decided that people in America deserved the right to see a doctor if they are sick.

Looking at it from a doctors point of view, they chose to become doctors to treat patients from whatever it was that called to them to become doctors. Knowing this, should they be DICTATED to whom they can treat and how they should be treated. The freaking IRS is going to be in charge of this, telling who can get what and when. Where do the the doctors get a say in that. These doctors who were graced with the skill to become doctors put forward more times than not their own money to receive the knowledge to treat patients. They could just as easily quit due to the demands that this bill is going to put on them. Then I ask you, where will this country be in terms of getting the RIGHT to see a doctor when there could possibly be none left? What will we do then, see the local witch doctor, shaman, etc. Maybe there will be those traveling salesmen that come to your door with the MIRACLE elixir to save your life. Doctors are a LUXURY in this day and age, they are a MIRACLE in of themselves.

What a uniquely and strangely twisted view. Doctors become doctors to treat sick people, agree there. It`s their calling. Under the current US system, they have to turn away sick people who can`t afford it, so long, tough love. I have many Doctor friends, who would find this current US system abhorrent in the extreme, and contradictory to the Hippocratic Oath.

In my paltry experience, Doctors become Doctors because they want to help sick people, not to phone in a private (let`s never forget, profit-driven) insurance company to make sure that the poor sick individual they`re about to treat is covered in their policy, before actually helping the poor bastard.

I wonder at America sometimes, I really do.

There`s a law in America that says doctors cannot turn away patients for any reason, even if they cannot pay.

It isn`t completely true. A lot of the people I know (not all the people in the world, but the people I really know) were mad during a lot *if not all* of these other things being posted about. They fought and were called crazy and conspiracy theorists.... Ridiculed at every turn.

    I see a pattern arising.

You guys finally figured out why Bush`s numbers were so low. He wasnt a conservative. CIA operative, how funny. She was married to a diplomat, went to diplomatic functions. Ya, bet she secured some real secrets, prolly the kind of misinformation they want us to believe. Just like when her husband went to Nigeria.

This too will fail. Just wait till all your parents retire and your tax rates fly through the roof. Social security is in trouble. Do you realize 48 percent of american pay no federal tax. That will change. This program will fail, it makes no sense. America is on the cusp of failure, tottering on the edge. When we go down, so will the world. Yeah China even more so.

@auburnjunky that may be true but they save the persons life, or try to in some cases, and the patient and or family members get slapped with a bill for it later. whether that money comes from a paycheck or other means, they still have to pay.

    @bassdee:

No that`s not true. Medical bills pile up, yes. Here`s the thing.

Federal law says that medical bills cannot affect your credit. ALSO; medical bills, no matter the size, fall off your record after 7 years (like bankruptcy).

I agree that this is no way to live, but to say that with no health care that you will die/ not get help, is preposterous.

Here`s a simple solution. Get a job with health care. If you don`t/can`t get a job with health care, get medicaid. If you are making too much money to get medicaid, cancel the cable, quit smoking, and go buy a personal policy. (I just saved someone 600$ a month! :))

Davy: Yes, health care is horrendously expensive in the US, but that`s not due to a LACK of government ownership and control; it`s BECAUSE of it.

Some things that make it so expensive are:

    1) States mandate that policies cover all sorts of expensive stuff like in vitro fertilization, marriage counseling, "alternative medicine" quackery, drug rehab, and free or low-cost checkups and screening. Also, it`s illegal to shop for a better deal across state lines.

    2) Juries can award huge jackpots for punitive and non-monetary damages. Malpractice insurance can cost over $250k/yr. Doctors order unnecessary tests just to cover their asses.

    3) Most services are paid by 3rd parties, so patients don`t care what anything costs. "Sprained ankle? I want an MRI!"

    4) Medicaid and Medicare pay only 70-80% of cost, so providers have to jack up the price to everybody else to make up for it.

    Obamacare won`t fix these problems.
