konablend, how do you install the resynthesizer?
In case they don`t answer...

Assuming you`re using Windows and assuming you`ve downloaded the 0.16 Resynth compiled for Windows:

You have to place the file(s) manually. resynth.exe goes in the GIMP plug-ins folder. You might need the patched smart remove and smart enlarge .scm files - they go in the GIMP scripts folder.

http://registry.gimp.org/node/24255 for details and locations for downloading the relevant files.

" Give it a try folks, there`s no harm in just checking it out."

But doing something differently than the way we`ve been doing it for the past 2 to 5 years is pure evil. Unless there`s a Photoshop logo on it, it`s wrong...WRONG!

People can be so close-minded. ;D

"HOT DAMN! I`m so buying the upgrade when it comes out!"

Or just download an illegal copy. If you`re worried about "laws", I live in Canada and would gladly burn it, for a price, certainly 500% cheaper than the shelf price (shipping included).

I downloaded The GIMP and the Resynthesizer plug-in because of this video, and the comments below. It looks like you can do it in GIMP just fine, I`ve worked on several images so far, all with pleasing results. I`ve not just been doing small edits, but large changes as well. Give it a try folks, there`s no harm in just checking it out.

I agree with pyre. CS5 is fueled by evil. It`s the only explanation for this actually working.
It was actually creating objects that weren`t in the original image. yet it still went with it.
I didn`t know that was physically possible to program without giving the it some pre-existing knowledge of what a desert looks like.
The person who wrote the Resynthesizer plugin for GIMP 5 years ago (which does the same thing) gives a detailed explanation of how it works. It was part of his thesis.

My guess is that it uses the contents of an area around the section to be filled in. The objects in the faked section of desert were the same as the objects in the desert around it.
all the people saying gimp can do it or that this is the same as clone stamp and magic lasso... you don`t really work in this field, do you?
I think it`s implausible that people have been lying for 5 years about GIMP being able to do it and no-one has noticed they`re lying, not even after all the videos of people doing it with GIMP. I think it`s much more likely that they`re telling the truth.

Photoshop will probably do it better and with a better interface, though. It`s definitely better for pro use, but for amateur use if you don`t have US$700 spare GIMP is just the job.

Did you see the part with the desert?

It was actually creating objects that weren`t in the original image. yet it still went with it.
I didn`t know that was physically possible to program without giving the it some pre-existing knowledge of what a desert looks like.

now that is god like impressive.

If you`re running a business, Photoshop is usually a better deal.

If US$700 is nothing to you, Photoshop is usually a better deal.

Otherwise, GIMP is a better deal.

It`s worth bearing in mind that this new feature that is amazing everyone and which will be in the next version of Photoshop was in GIMP *5 years ago*. It`s not as though GIMP is way behind Photoshop in terms of features.

Then download GIMP and the Resynthesizer plug-in for it. Both free. Available for various operating systems.

GIMP is less polished than Photoshop, but it`s very powerful (especially with plug-ins) and it`s free.

For all the people wondering how it could possibly be done, the author of Resynthesizer (which does the same thing) has full details in his PhD thesis (which is what he wrote Resythnesizer for).

Note the year - 2005. IT`s taking a while for Photoshop to catch up with the free software.

i) This is true.

ii) GIMP, which is a completely free image editing program, has had it for several years now. It`s the resynthesizer plug-in. Which is also free. Like all the other plug-ins.

Someone made a video of them using it to do exactly the same work shown in this video of the next version of photoshop. Same pictures, same work. The video quality sucks, though - he`s obviously recorded at a much higher resolution and resized it for YouTube using a quick and dirty algorithm.

GIMP doing the same thing

saw how long it took on a macintosh to use, now imagine 2-3 times as long on a comparable windows machine...still, less time than it would`ve taken to do most of that, especially the tree. and personally, I would`ve just cropped that last panoramic, I mean seriously, you`re taking away from the original image by making it imaginary/fake

"There`s no way that`s true, how the hell would it know what to put in the missing space?? I could kinda understand the tree thing, but not the desert or the last sky thing."

Quite some time ago they had a tutorial on image editing on how you can scale pictures without distortion; basically the program has a complex algorithm that detects the most emphasized pixels near it and replaces the image best using similar colors.
