PETA Roped In Olivia Munn As A Spokesperson [Pic]

Normally we loathe PETA and their self-righteous message, but we"re willing to listen to them just this one time...
Many people in first-world countries can not or do not manage their diets well enough already. Replacing every high-nutrient meat with seven different plant products will not help matters. Even if it is possible to eat a balanced vegetarian diet, most people would fail.
Which is pretty much why I don`t do it.

I was thinking on an individual basis though, not a worldwide basis. It`s a sound choice for individuals who could do it right and have the resources to do it right. I agree that it isn`t a sound choice for all people.

Although if it became more widespread it would become easier to do in wealthy countries because there would be a big market for food products to meet the demand for vegetarian food with a suitable variety of plant-sourced amino acids and wider knowledge of what`s needed for a good vegetarian diet.

"Why not? You acknowledge that it can be done healthily, so why do you think it isn`t a sound choice? "

Many people in first-world countries can not or do not manage their diets well enough already. Replacing every high-nutrient meat with seven different plant products will not help matters. Even if it is possible to eat a balanced vegetarian diet, most people would fail.

And in the majority of the rest of the world, the people do not have the luxury of variety. It`s simply not an option.

B12 is ultimately obtained from bacteria. Ironically, the cleanliness of modern food production stops whatever B12 you could get from plant sources. You can get enough B12 from some organic crops fertilised with animal dung in bacteria-laden soil. Yummy.

But yes, vegans should suppliment with a microgram or two of B12 daily.
Just because it`s possible to eat healthily without meat does not make it a sound choice.
Why not? You acknowledge that it can be done healthily, so why do you think it isn`t a sound choice?
As someone who`s lived in several countries far poorer than ours, I can say that livestock is a staple.
As I said before:
Meat is an efficient source of nutrition, but it`s only *necessary* if you only have access to a limited variety of plant food.
If, on the other hand, you have access to a wide variety of plant food transported in from all over the place, meat doesn`t have to be a staple and isn`t needed at all.

If you`re living as a hunter-gatherer or a small-scale farmer living solely on locally grown food (especially if you`re also poor), then you are going to need at least dairy products for a healthy diet.

Does that apply to anyone here?

Your reply would be relevant if I was arguing that humans are adapted to being herbivores.

Since I`m not making that argument, your reply is avoiding the question.

I was replying to the argument that humans are physiologically geared to being pure carnivores.

My position is that humans are physiologically geared to being omnivores.

Can you answer the question I posed (to Baelzar, but this is a public forum so anyone is free to have a go)?
vegetarians are healthier b/c the protein we get is better for you.
Can you answer these related questions off the top of your head:

Which amino acids do you need to get from your diet?

What plant sources do you get them from?

Note the plural - no one source is anywhere near good enough. Unlike meat, which is a good source of all of them.

Any vegetarian who doesn`t know the answers cannot make the assertion you make.

I`ve noticed that not one of the vegetarians posting in this thread is even mentioning amino acids. Some talk about protein, but that`s only a part of the issue. You could get more than enough protein from plants and still be suffering from "protein" deficiency. It`s the amino acids in the protein that matter, because that`s what your body actually uses.

that has to be the most retarded, misguided thing i have ever heard. you know where the myth came from that we need meat for protein? the USDA. the same people that let the poultry industry redefine feces and chickens absorb 11% of fecal soup. USDA inspectors only have TWO SECONDS to examine each bird, checking about 25,000 a day. like they give a poo about your health. vegetarians are healthier b/c the protein we get is better for you. the ADA has acknowledged that. your an idiot on a message board, you think you know more than the ADA or the WHO? i dont normally give people crap for eating meat unless they act like tools and make up excuses. the only excuse is that you think it tastes good, so it`s worth the bad health, the bad environmental effects, and animals being tortured and genetically manufactured to suffer MORE. people say vegetarians are the sentimentalists, but its people who eat meat that value what they feel over what`s logical. factory farming is not SUSTAINABLE.

I imagine he/she is referring to B12, which can ONLY be obtained from meat and dairy products. It helps DNA synthesis during cell division, and a deficiency of it produces eczema, skin lesions and anemia - and guess what most Vegans we all know look like?

Even the most serious `Veg Only` person should be at least eating eggs OR taking vitamin supplements specifically to make up for this absence.

This is my stance as well. Just because its POSSIBLE to live a healthy life on nothing but plant life, does NOT make it ideal. Truth is, vegetarianism is just way too complicated and annoying to choose it over just eating what makes you happy. Which brings up another point.

Vegetarians/Vegans that take the militant stance of crapping all over people who choose to eat meat NEEDS TO STOP. (I`m not accusing anyone in particular, just a general statement.) Your choice is your choice and thats fine, but don`t push your ways on anyone else because that just makes you look like the ignorant douche, no matter

PETA is an organization that glosses over the facts of living in most of the world. It`s one thing to plan a vegetarian diet from your local supermarket and buy vitamin pills if you live in America or West Europe. It`s another thing entirely if you`re part of the other 80% of the world population that barely has enough food to eat at all.

We still retain incisors and bicuspids for a reason. I don`t disagree with the notion that it`s *possible* to get all the same nutrients from plants, but PETA and their ilk can`t seriously expect every person to manage their diet in such a fashion.

Just because it`s possible to eat healthily without meat does not make it a sound choice. As someone who`s lived in several countries far poorer than ours, I can say that livestock is a staple.
Our body requires nutrients that eating just vegetables doesn`t provide.
The nutrients you refer to are probably the amino acids that humans can`t make. Meat is a good source of all of them. No plant is...but different plants are good sources of different amino acids. If you eat an appropriate variety of plants (not just vegetables - fruits, nuts, grains, etc) you can get enough of them all.
I know people who were vegetarian for several years and looked like cancer patients.
Then their diet was poor. As the saying goes, they were doing it wrong.
So yea... You`re thin. You have a low BMI. But to be healthy, you NEED to have body fat and continual intake of protein.
All of which you can get from plant sources. You just need to have enough knowledge to "mix `n` match" different kinds.

Try an image search for "raw food bodybuilder". They eat only raw plant food.
Angilion, we can survive on vegetable matter in lean times, but our systems cannot even break down raw plant cell walls to get nutrients.

We have to heavily process and/or cook grains and vegetables to get to the nutrients. Even then, most just passes straight through.
Humans can live healthily on raw plant matter and nothing else. Not even cooked. You`re just plain wrong about that. There are even bodybuilders who eat only a raw vegan diet.

Humans are far more versatile in their diet than you think. Meat is an efficient source of nutrition, but it`s only *necessary* if you only have access to a limited variety of plant food.

Incidentally, why do you think humans have evolved such a high proportion of large flattened teeth, i.e. the type associated with eating plant matter?

Reptilia, life is too short to worry about that stuff. EVERYTHING causes SOME form of cancer. And most heart disease is hereditary and has very little to do with the food we eat. (This does not include fast food addicts and people who eat horribly.) We as an animal are omnivores. Our body requires nutrients that eating just vegetables doesn`t provide. I know people who were vegetarian for several years and looked like cancer patients. So yea... You`re thin. You have a low BMI. But to be healthy, you NEED to have body fat and continual intake of protein. And your Flu argument... The flu is the flu.... The name has nothing to do with where it came from... They just give each strain a different name to push the new flu shot on people. The only time I EVER got a flu shot is the only year I ever got sick with a flu.

How about the fact that chickens are legally allowed to absorb up to 11% of a chlorinated liquid that`s been nick-named "fecal soup?" How about the fact that "animal protein intake is linked with osteoporosis, kidney disease, calcium stones in the urinary tract, and some cancers." The American Dietetic Association released this information. They also went over some health advantages of a vegetarian diet: "lower blood cholesterol, lower risk of heart disease, lower blood pressure levels, and lower risk of hypertension and type 2 diabetes. Vegetarians tend to have a lower body mass index and lower overall cancer rates." 25% of the annual deaths in America are because of heart disease. Another 25% because of cancer. 50% of the annual deaths in this country are related to the way that we eat. Not to mention that Swine Flu never would have happened if we treated the pigs better. The World Health Organization has a list of ten concerns about the next influenza p

Because she is...

Its not just that she`s a "nerd chick" or "part-Asian"... She`s genuinely a gorgeous woman. I don;t think they`d have placed her naked in an ad like this if she wasn`t.

Cool for you and your gf, Altaru (and props for hooking a catch, my good fellow), but is your girl a model? Or on a show on a nerd friendly cable channel?

Olivia Munn just happens to have a great audience behind her, and since the majority of her fan base is computer and gaming nerds, and a lot of those nerds also frequent forum sites, I`d assume she`s gonna have a lot of fans on I-A-B, 4chan, Ebaums, etc... It`s only logical.

But I do recall some organic spinach and spring onions wreaking deathly havoc. So does that mean "organic" means "sprayed with organ juice"?

i love how people actually think that vegetarianism is bad for the environment, when the #1 of global warming is factory farming. the way we get our meat right now isn`t even sustainable with the water we`re using and the land degradation it causes. not to mention that industrial fishing has "come to resemble wars of extermination." look up the term by-catch. fun fact: if every American removed just one serving of meat from their diet in a week, it`d be the equivalent of taking 5 million cars off the road. there are way more reasons to be a vegetarian than just animal welfare. it`s 1000 times better for your health. did you know the poultry industry reclassified the term "feces" to "cosmetic blemish" about 30 years ago? that way, all you dratheads get to eat SH IT.

Baelzar: I`m going to disagree a little.

Humans have a longer and more complex digestive system than would be expected of a carnivore our size. Our teeth are also somewhat different to what would be expected from a carnivore, with very short canines and flatter molars.

I think it`s more accurate to say that we evolved as omnivores rather than as carnivores.

It`s more of a spectrum than the neat discrete groups suggested by the names, though. For example, dogs and cats are both classed as carnivores, but dogs will cheerfully eat plant matter and can live without meat, whereas cats naturally eat only meat and cannot survive without meat. It`s probably possible, if you`re very careful and use lab-made special food, to force a cat to be vegetarian without killing it nastily, but even vegetarian groups explicitly advise against trying it.

Actually I would probably have felt super awesome because I`ve never talked to a rocket scientist before and it would have been cool.

Also, yes let`s just agree to disagree- I swear I`m not a giant mean person, I just feel like when it comes to animals I`m not speaking the same language as others, which is annoying. We can agree on that point, at least.

However, our methods and understanding of how to achieve this goal are clearly different as night and day.

I suppose, on that end, we`re just going to have to agree to disagree.

For future reference, try not to make assumptions about the other person in debates. You end up sounding like an idiot when they tell you about themselves and they`re nothing like you thought they were.

Altaru - eating fruit does not kill any lifeform. But that`s neither here nor there in your `have some sense, people` argument.

and yes - as a species i think we should be restricting our expansion somewhat. we`ve all seen what happens to bacteria on a petri dish when they run out of agar.

people are inherently selfish. If there were a super advanced pill (made from waste products and sunlight, whatever - made in some non harmful manner) that would meet ALL our dietary needs for a day (like on the jetsons if you recall) and all you`d need to do is take this pill once a day and never eat again - I dont think it would be terribly popular. People LIKE eating. and they like eating meat especially. it is enjoyable. we are all slaves to our own brains. Guilt, pleasure, fear, sympathy, all these are mediated by neurotransmitter interactions. I guess we could force the whole population to feel guilt at the thought of meat.. but it would be an ethical trade off, of s

It would be impossible to have 100% blood-free hands in the western world when it comes to animals. It`s not about being a perfect little poster-child for a cruelty-free life-- it`s about reducing as much as possible your support of needless animal suffering. Pointing out the shortcomings of veg*ns doesn`t quite invalidate what we`re attempting to do.

Boadicea, who arbitrated any rights? My points have been that people are biologically and psychologically attached to other people, and that`s the basis for people caring for none another. These attachments can only be applied on a personal level to animals, not on a biological one. My other point was that you`re the one who is discriminating against humans by expecting us to treat animals in an unnatural way. You can`t expect a lion to not kill a Gazelle, so why expect a human not to kill a cow?

Look, the only way for humans to NOT kill SOMETHING, is for us to not exist.

As a growing species, we need space. Space requires that we take space that was at one time an animals home.

Are you going to tell me that we should just stop growing as a species so we won`t have to use more space?

Well, good luck with that message. In the mean time, I`m going to go do what I`m biologically told to do and pro-create.

And eat meat, which my body, especially those flat teeth in the front of my mouth, evolved to do.

And , another quick note: Look at ALL the species considered most intelligent in the world. Look at their diets.

See what they include? (And yes, pigs do count because they eat damn near EVERYTHING, meat included.)

Sure, humans overdo it a bit, like those guys who eat at McDonalds three times a day, but you`re not going to stop people eating meat. PERIOD.

Boadicea - this is true. Animals eat plants - but then they also dont have moral quibbles about it. Herbivores dont morally choose not to eat meat - they are physiologically limited in their choices - their bodies are designed to process plant matter only - in most cases. carnivores in the animal kingdom generally dont spend extensive periods of time feeling guilty about their last meal.
At the end of the day - is it the choice to eat meat you are really unhappy about - or the organised manner in which it is raised and killed? the brutal efficiency? our population is quite large in the meantime and having everyone hunt and gather would leave less time for computer programming and the production of entertaining tv dramas.

npdarren: The basic right of humans not to be treated as things does not guarantee that humans will aid other humans, or that we are obligated to intervene to prevent harm from coming to humans from animals or other humans. So the right of animals not to be treated as things means we can`t treat animals as our resources. It doesn`t mean we have moral or legal obligations to aid them or prevent harm from coming to them (from other animals obviously).

I know, I`m incredibly harsh, a little evil, and DEFINITELY going to rot in the fieriest pits of hell. But that`s not the point of this discussion.

"We have no biological reason to do anything other than drat and eat. Should we stop everything else? "

No. Because we are a species with the ABILITY to do other things.

Cows and pigs don`t. You know how I know they don`t?

Because they don`t even have the brains to rise up as a whole and fight back against the cruelty they`re subjected too.

"butcher: I hate oatmeal, some fruits, an avocado sandwich and some crap with salsa. What`s that got to do with anything?"

He`s probably trying to bring up that you likely ate something meat involved.

HOWEVER, even though you didn`t, you do realize that everything you ate was grown on land that was once an animals home, right?

actually we are concerned about the welfare of other species on two levels. on the personal one - things with faces (simple eyes, nose mouth) inspire sympathy in us. the larger the eyes, the more sympathy is evoked. (Its why pandas are way cuter than polar bears. and seals cuter than sea lions) this is simply due to biological imperatives to protect our young. it transfers.
then on a more abstract cognitive level we have the will to preserve species because we have observed in the past how some species have become very useful for something (e.g. pharmaceutically) later. theres no way to anticipate this usefulness so we should try to preserve as much genetic variation as possible. This is quite a utilitarian and cold explanation.. but there you go.

Speciesism fails hard too. In a twisted sort of way, claiming people are speciesist is speciesist. If you expect people to care about and stop killing animals by calling it speciesism, you must also expect animals to stop killing each other, otherwise you`re singling out humans which is speciesist.

On a side note, a year or so ago at the elementary school near my town, there was quite a ruckus when some PETA members showed up after school and handed out fliers that graphically depicted what goes on behind the scenes at a meat factory to the students. Needless to say, the kids, (who did nothing wrong at all) were very scared and upset. I`ve seen that happen at my college too, and it annoys me. My rule of thumb is - If you eat meat, that`s fine. If you don`t, that`s fine too.

in addition - living on vegetables is as bad if not worse than living on meats - plants scream ultrasonically when you callously kill them for your own selfish consumption. Only difference is - they dont look cute, they dont inspire sympathy, they dont bleed in any visible way and you cant hear them cry because of your own physiological limitations. (you also cant see them grow and respond to interaction because of your temporal limitations).
really - if you are unable to manage your feelings of guilt at killing `earthlings` - you should really live on a diet of fruit. Although.. i suppose thats basically like subsisting on nothing but semen. Plant semen. Pleasant tasting and brightly coloured semen. however.. if you crap in the bush then - you have the warm fuzzy knowledge that its what the plant wants and you`re contributing to the `circle of life`

Not sure when this debate ceased to be about using elephants in circuses (fair enough - they are endangered and there are plenty of other ways for people to see them these days as well as youtube clips if you really desperately need to see an elephant doing tricks for whatever reason) and became about dietary preferences..

You know.. this could fast forward into a debate on creationism vs evolution since one of the reasons the human brain was able to evolve into its current state was the change of diet from mainly plant matter to fruits and meats (which have way way more energy). Subsisting on a purely plant matter diet now requires careful attention to vitimins and minerals - which may often need to be supplemented artificially.

I hope you realize that your position is human-centric. No other animal is capable of willfully overcoming the impulse to protect one`s own species than humans. So to say there`s no moral criterion to prefer our own species over another or use differences in species to justify killing animals puts the human species in another realm altogether because no other animal can even come close to sharing those sentiments.

Look, I`m not completely heartless. I think there are a lot of situations where people should treat animals better. Zoos and Sea World depress and anger me immensely, I try to educate people against purchasing an animal from a pet store and I even think we could be nicer to the animals we eat for food. However, comparing a beef farm to something like the Holocaust just disgusts me. We kill those animals to eat. Those people who died at those concentration camps were killed because of religious and racist intolerance. That is completely different and if you can`t see why, you`re the heartless one.

People eat way more protein than they need to eat-- plenty is found eating a decent plant-based diet. Needing "meat protein" is bull. And the amount of feed grown for meat animals is more than humans themselves could eat. So we`d have plenty if it stopped going to meat production.

cows can move. Flooding, draught or varying natural disasters can wipe out a whole field of a crop while animals can be moved to a different location to ensure their survival and the food the comes with them.
that is not to say animals cannot die to disease (plants can as well) but there is a reason for everything

What I`m trying to say is, either way there`s problems, because if you cut out one resource, then you need to make up for the lack of IT with others.

And 3/4 of the time, you need more of the others than the original, that`s why we were using the original in the first place. Just like you need to eat a lot more of certain plants to make up for the lack of meat protein. That is, if you want to be a strong, healthy person as opposed to one of those worthless toothpicks...

If everyone were to cut out the middle man, and just ate plants, then what would happen to plant consumption?

Not to mention, plants are being used in a variety of other things right now, which further increases the need for farmland. If I heard correctly, there`s a shortage of feed in some places because of the increasing use of ethanol, etc.

I wonder if hardcore vegetarians ever stop to think that, in consuming more plants to make up for the lack of meat, they`re increasing the need for farmland, which in turn increases the need to use whatever land available, which, in turn, means the destruction of animals natural habitats for farms.

Of course, this is quickly becoming less of an issue, what with more efficient farming methods and all that, but still...

No it`s not. Racism and sexism are based on extremely faulty stereotypes about biology. In general, racist and sexist sentiments are false. Specieist (or however its spelled) ideas, however, are based on the concrete separation or differences between us and other species. I have no reason to cherish the life of a pig or cow, but I have a very biological and psychological motive to cherish human life.

Are you kidding me? Your comparing the killing of millions of people killed and tortured to a slaughterhouse? Does it even make sense for a slaughterhouse to torture animals instead of killing them as quickly and humanely as possible to maximize profits? Slaughterhouses are inspected, and really if they were that bad, the government would be shutting them down.

Obviously if you`re an inherently uncaring individual, nothing will change that, but to people who do care about animals on some level- that movie is difficult to get through and will hopefully jar them into being more conscientious with their dietary choices.

To be a bit clearer then: Prohibition of the Use of Exotic Animals, by circuses or individuals, is a nationwide concern, BUT successive Federal Governments have refused to take a policy on it. It is therefore left to individual councils to enact their own legislation/bylaws.

Exotic Animals are banned in 471 of the 562 Local Government Areas in Australia. If yours isn`t one of them, you need to be writing to them and asking why the hell not.

Almost all of those councils who enacted bylaws, did so in the 1980`s following an investigation of Silvers Circus, which revealed animal abuse, malnutrition, violence and disease on a sickening scale, was the norm.

Peta goes way way over the top to "help" animals. Inhumane treatment of animals MUST stop and Peta has drawn alot of attention to that but No one takes them seriously anymore because of their tactics.

Remember when they went after your President because he swatted at a fly?

Rant over cause burgers are on the bbQ.
No pho for me.

So... they`re all for the ethical non-exploitation of animals, but they`re willing to exploit women sexually to get what they want?

BTW, there haven`t been ANY animals whatsoever in circuses in Australia (or visiting Australia) for over 20 years, thanks to Silvers Circus and the shocking mistreatment of its animals, and legislation that was passed as a result of that investigation, banning any animal acts.

"I think the majority of you "hate" PETA because it`s the cool position to hold. The in thing to hate."

No, I hate PETA because I`ve actually had to put up with their BS since I was in 3rd frickin` grade. They forced their way into my school, to start with.

Three PETA parents damn near got the school menu changed, until other parents stopped that. Not that the PETA non-nice individuals backed down...

From there, there are plenty of other Animal Rights/Liberation groups that do the job better, but they don`t get the money because they don`t pull BS publicity stunts, and they don`t publicize because the money they receive goes to actual worthwhile causes.

I`m all for humane treatment of animals. I HATE circus`s, and other torture for amusement or "fashion". But I also hate PETA, because what they do pretty much only succeeds at pushing people farther away.

I never liked her in the first place, but now I have another reason. She fits in quite well with PETA, being a hypocritical b*tch and all...

I honestly agree with you to a certain extent, alot of people hate on PETA because it`s totally cool and hip and all their facebook friends do it but that doesn`t mean PETA isn`t a bag of dicks. I recommend Penn & Teller: Bullpoo (episode 1 or 2, Season 2 IIRC), not only because they`re smart and make good points (although probably biased) but also because it`s a funny show.

I think the majority of you "hate" PETA because it`s the cool position to hold. The in thing to hate. Ooooh look I hate PETA! They`re bad they euthanize dogs. When in reality if we were treating animals so well there wouldn`t have been a need for PETA.
You don`t have to agree with their positions on everything to recognize they have been a force for good to those who have no voice.
The message here is righteous. Elephants shouldn`t be shuttled around from city to city so some monkey can ride it for the joy of humans. They should be free.

Try seeing it first hand angilion! have you ever bled any animial out...EVER?
Its so easy to quote something from the wide wide world of webs, but to do it, and watch a lamb look at you, eye to eye and to know, it knows what going on....(and yes almost all the blood does drain out).
When I killed I showed compassion to each and every one of them. "read the details. they`re nasty."
Try living "the details"

[quote">I mean look at Kosher meat, I`m sure the animals are specifically well kept and not harmed, and then killed in the most humane way possible.[/quote">

Kosher is the rules of an ancient religion. It has nothing to do with modern morality. The main requirement of kosher slaughter is that the animal`s throat is cut while it is alive and fully conscious (no stunning allowed). Lifting the back of the animal is usual. The point is to drain the blood, although that`s silly because there`s no way all the blood will drain out.

"She told me that the first time she visited a kosher slaughter house, she heard screaming cattle from a half kilometer away and wondered what was different in this place."

Still kosher. Read the details. They`re nasty.

Kosher slaughter

Kosher has nothing to do with treating

i`m vegetarian and try and avoid leather and products tht require an animal to die as best i can, but i dont think eating meat NECESSARILY entails animal cruelty. i accept tht bottom line, humans are biologically supposed to eat meat. all anyone should ask is that we do so in as humane a way as possible.

How does anyone not know what PETA is really like? It`s not as though it`s a secret. Yet they have a steady stream of famous (or fairly famous) people eager to support the PR facade of PETA, which they have mistaken for PETA itself.

Female 3,562
It`s not just that Elephants are simply not meant for circus life, but the circus literally has to constantly torture them just to force them to be tame. And they`re especially cruel to the young ones to break their spirit early. You could go to the zoo to see a much happier elephant, there`s no reason for them in circuses.

paddyt07>>" I mean look at Kosher meat, I`m sure the animals are specifically well kept and not harmed, and then killed in the most humane way possible."

No offense but kosher and halal meat is less humane. The animal is raised the same way as any other food baring creature. When its is ready for slaughter a rabbi or whatever will bless the animal, say a prayer and cut it throat. It will then bleed out, while fully conscious. A typical food baring animal will be "bonked" or "stunned" rendering it unconscious and then be allowed to bleed out. My point is.... kosher and halal is just waaay more inhumain simply because the animal can see its blood and life gush out of it, panic for a minute or less and slowly die. Make it unconscious (properly) and its dead without the shock and trauma..
Dammit Fricken Frig the fricken Kosher and Halal bastard food killers and the way they torture our food.

Thank you and have a nice day
