Submitted by: fancylad 7 years ago in Funny

Wait, is this an April Fool"s Day joke? Is there a new type of green coal in Pennsylvania no one knows about?

Wow Freddy, I think it`s time you went and touched the monolith. The coal plant that powers my house emits zero pollutants because of modern technology. If you think CO2 is a polluntant then you need to stuff a sock in your breather. oh and btw, they can cure cancer.

I see signs like this in Pittsburgh at bus stops and I always want to cover it with print outs of facts on how coal isn`t clean or just write lies over it really big.

I think coal is clean in that new plants will only spew CO2 and water. And CO2 isn`t _technically_ a pollutant. From the right perspective, it`s "plant food". Oh yeah, and it contributes to global warming.

You can make a case that if the energy is used to power an electric car that replaces a gasoline engine, then it has helped reduce the overall pollution.

I think it`s neat you are making fun of somebody for making a terrible comparison and to show you`re point you make an equal or worse comparison.

Wow Stevo, you`re a complete moron. Show me ONE valid, credible source that shows a way to have green coal. It can`t be done. If you burn a fuel, there will be emmissions. Comparing that to an iPad makes as much sense as comparing politics to medicine. It`s like saying "They can pass a law to give health care to everyone but they can`t cure cancer?"

Go back to watching the grass grow genius.

I don`t think that`s a good investment though, IDK. I have NO idea how much coal you got over there..

Is it all in Centralia? Is that where the green coal is?

You can`t have your cake and eat it too people if you want to get rid of our dependence on oil this is one of the most viable options. The US has the largest coal reserve in the world and they`ve done alot to make it cleaner and are still making advances.

Stevo63; yeah, but the issue is always at what cost? Using CCS to make coal cleaner is massively uneconomical at the moment. It can be done, but whether it should or not is another matter...

maybe they took a piece of coal and painted it green.

Those who think coal is dirty are ignorant. What, they can make a Ipad that can practically wipe your ass for you, but, they can`t filter fuel emissions? Get a clue people.

Perhaps they`re using a Carbon Capture and Storage plant? That reduces emissions by over 85%... though it does incidentally reduce the efficiency of the plant still further meaning you have to burn more coal per unit of electricity produced.

It greatly depends on what type of coal is being burned and what actions are being taken to control the power plant emissions after the burn.

Everyone pictures black smog from burning coal but it just isn`t always the case. PA is known for a lot of anthracite coal which is a hard coal type and it burns virtually smokeless. many of the amish communities in PA use this type of coal for heat.

The criticism of "clean coal" is that a company could makes its coal burning plants produce 1% less harmful emissions, then they call it "clean coal."

ITS MARKETING. "Clean" = ever so slightly less dirty.

clean coal is a real "thing," but all it is is increased efficiency in the mining and buring of coal. No matter what you do, however, burning coal will release toxins. But props to the industry for trying to clean up its act. It will never be zero emissions, however.

Whether coal is clean or not, coal is PA`s, and quite frankly the US eastern seaboard`s #1 fuel. Powering more homes than wind, water, natural gas combined, in PA at least, and is a huge revenue source for PA. However because of Obama and environmental scares, that business will soon be destroyed, laying off thousands of jobs... How`s that for job creating, Obama?

There are supposedly new technologies that make coal power cleaner, though I doubt that it`s anywhere near as clean as nuclear, wind, etc.

`Green` in this context just means environmentally-friendly, so its a normal BS public relations ad. What *IS* amusing is calling Coal, the result of millions of years of high pressure deep underground, "NEW" technology! lol!

I wouldn`t be surprised if careful use of locally mined coal is greener than using oil imported from halfway round the world.

Coal is filthy, the only "green" or remotely "clean" coal plant is a prototype in Europe that pumps CO2 into the ground.

Maybe they`re fitted coal-burning power stations with scrubbers to reduce emissions and called the result `green`.

Male 447
Maybe you don`t know about it, but clean coal isn`t that new. It has to do with how they process and use it in order to produce less pollution. Reduces reliance on oil, so it`s good short term solution while we look for improved renewable resources.

Sorry if that sounded PSA-y but I`m from the area and its a good source of jobs for a industry that really needs them.
