Photo is a staged physc photo, thanks loc.gov. The stuffed bear is an interesting prop that was used to prop younger children up during the exposure process. Plate photographs took up to 5 minuets to expose which explains the strange facial expression.

i`d say the dog is asleep, hot day maybe?, his eyes are closed...had he been stuffed his eyes would have been glass; and open...nothing wrong with the kids expression...just a normal kid blosomming into a later Dame Edna

Plate photographs were not inexpensive at the time and the family was most likely compensated with a family photograph by whomever commissioned this work.
Nidonemo about the time this photograph was produced male children above the age of 5 were usually wearing high water pants attached with buttons to a shirt with long socks and wore the same type of outfit made or a lesser material when playing or working chores.

If I`m not mistaken, this looks VERY much like the picture seen in my psych class about known records of gender identity disorder (known now as Transgender) in which they person saw themselves as the opposite sex. Maybe I`m just so used to seeing this photo it doesn`t even seem weird. Anywho, can be considered a medical photo.

@ CrakrJak, yeah....Doesn`t seem to be working with this kid. Punishment doesn`t really work when they enjoy it. Props to you, little frilly dress boy; you show `em :)

Didn`t they use to dress little boys up as girls a long time ago or was that only when they were babies?

I agree that the size of the head compared to the body makes this photo slightly suspect. Also the lighting on the face seem just a touch off.

If this is not shopped, then this is the beginnings of the man-boy love association and he was made to wear girl`s clothes, or it`s really a girl.
