Went to Amsterdam a few months ago, it`s legal there and from what I found it`s no more/less harmful than alcohol. If you ever have the chance try `laughing buddah` on a vaporizer, was hilarious XP

What this video doesn`t share is that Cannabis grows in many varieties, and that you can get good quality hemp from a low-THC producing plant. Hemp can be made without producing enough THC to produce the drug. Link

Yeah, this is all pretty accurate. Hemp really is a rather fantastic plant, and not just for getting high. It being illegal is one of the most stupid things the government has ever done. And it wasn`t even for the drug properties. It was because timber lobbyists didn`t want hemp replacing wood as the primary material for paper, so they strong-armed the government into banning it.

Wow, you can use hemp for "Instillation" I better go get some!

Legalizing pot always makes me laugh because the people who get all up in arms about it don`t realize how dumb they look most of the time. In theory I have no problem with the drug; I, personally, have never used it and don`t really plan to.

Show me a scientist SHOWING me these wonderful properties and I`ll be more inclined to believe it. Show me a video with annoying reggae music and horrible wipes and flying text and I`m grossly underwhelmed.

Sounds as if Jack Herer may be the (single) source.

Baisicly all the claims are right, but some are wildly exaggerated.

But even tho they are exaggerated, there is still no rational reason for criminalising hemp except that some some people retain power and some others make money of off the ban.

God... I`m in favor of a full legalization and tax pull, and even find this in bad taste. These people are a perfect example of burn outs, they are the reasons its not legal now. Maybe once they learn to shut their mouths and push the weed culture underground for a little while, we might make some progress in getting this stuff legal.

Well jakflak- the lies work both ways on that. Hemp is indeed a productive crop. Marijuana has numerous documented medical uses. Huge amounts of misinformation has been spread by the authorities to try and ensure its illegality has not been questioned. This clip is rather OTT, but the sense is there, albeit rather exaggerated, so it isn`t total fiction.

    @ JAbba

kid, before you start popping off at the mouth, or keyboard in this case, stfu and educate yourself a little bit.

most of what is presented in that infographic is TRUE. You really sould educate yourself on why weed was made illegal...here is a hint, it had to do with keping jobs after porhabition ended...

and yes, you can make thousands of products out of hemp, which cannot be smoked, and it does grow very very fast, HENCE is is called WEED...

clothing, paper, rope, shoes, etc can all be made easily from hemp.

    thetas,

you cannot tell the difference between clothing made of hemp and that made of other materials...

for thousands of years until it was made illegal nearly everywhere, clothes and paper were made from it.

it is true that if we switched to hemp crops for paper we would not need tree mills for paper at all. they companies that used the hemp would make more money because hemp is much easier, cheaper, and friendly to grow and produce product from.

those of you that think of hemp as bad only do so because your were brainwashed by a governemnt looking to pick a fight with any drug after prohabition ended...hemp was a good place to start laying down bans and keeping jobs.

I studied this while taking my second pyschopharmacology degree...but what do I know

Some of these weird uses were kinda..dumb. First of all, in order to use hemp for fuel, we`d have to devote acres upon acres of land just to grow it. Second of all, there`s NO sources. Third, it doesn`t cure anything. All it does it help relax people who are in a lot of pain due to cancer and what not. It doesn`t actually get rid of the cancer.
Me no like this video. A lot of false claims and over exaggerations on the pro`s.

I personally do not have any issues with people who smoke pot. My roommate smokes all the time. Only correlation I see is that people who smoke AND drink a lot during college tend to be very lazy and usually do poorly grade wise.

    YOU CANT SMOKE HEMP

and by the way, most drugs that treat the things MJ is used to treat...ONLY DEAL WITH THE PAIN AS WELL, aside from chemo there are no known drugs that cure cancer...that should be obvius.

and we have plenty of land here in the US that could be devoted to growing it. I dont care for it as a fuel but it has so many other uses that does not matter.

you want to end cutting down trees for paper...use hemp, it takes less hemp to make paper than it does fiber from tree, is easier on the land, requires no chemical spraying for bus and makes a damn fine paper at that...the bill of rights is still around is it not?

also, clothing made from it last longer, look and feel the same as other clothing and can be made cheaper because the crop requires less work to produce and grows ANYWHERE. they call it WEED for a reason.

Because hemp was poised to overtake the timber (wood) industry for the manufacture of paper. Hemp can produce more raw material cheaper, cleaner, and faster than trees can. Timber lobbyists strong-armed the government to ban the crop for its "drug properties" to eliminate competition. And it worked.

The conservative elements of government were also desperately looking for something to target after alcohol prohibition proved such a colossal failure. Religious conservatives love to control people, and while booze was too ingrained in American society to be eliminated, there wasn`t a big enough outcry over weed to overturn the ban in its infancy. Now we have decades of misleading societal stigma to fight through to end the ban.

A number of studies have shown an association between chronic marijuana use and increased rates of anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, and schizophrenia.

Marijuana increases heart rate by 20-100 percent shortly after smoking; this effect can last up to 3 hours. In one study, it was estimated that marijuana users have a 4.8-fold increase in the risk of heart attack in the first hour after smoking.

Numerous studies have shown marijuana smoke to contain carcinogens and to be an irritant to the lungs. In fact, marijuana smoke contains 50-70 percent more carcinogenic hydrocarbons than does tobacco smoke.

Several studies associate workers marijuana smoking with increased absences, tardiness, accidents, workers compensation claims, and job turnover.

Hemp oil is indeed highly unsaturated, and this is exactly why it should be avoided. Hemp oil is over 55 percent omega-6 fatty acids. Diets containing an excess of polyunsaturated fatty acids, particularly omega-6 fatty acids, have been linked not only to heart disease but also to cancer and autoimmune disease.

I am saying one thing, and one thing only. I think weed should be legal. Simple as that. Too me, the only reason it is illegal is because the government hasn`t figured out a way to tax it properly. If things like alcohol or cigarettes are legal, weed should be too. End of story. Weed is no where near (in terms of how the person acts after using the product) as bad as other drugs, or even alcohol. So meh.

It`s illegal because it can`t be taxed, since it`s a plant.
That`s... totally wrong. Lots of plants in the US are taxed. Trees are plants, and there are tons of taxes on wood. Tobacco is taxed to high heaven.

It is only food crops that don`t get taxed. So only the portion of hemp crops destined for food would be exempt from taxes. All other uses would still be taxable.

On the same note. They call it a gateway drug leading into other worse drugs but that is a lie. The only reason most who smoke marijuana move on to other drugs is because it is illegal and they are forced to deal with people who deal and or use other more hardcore drugs on a regular basis.

"A number of studies have shown an association between chronic marijuana use and increased rates of anxiety, depression....etc

-Same studies showed however that the correlation was not caused by use, but by already having the preexisting condition.

Marijuana increases heart rate by 20-100 percent shortly after smoking; this effect can last up to 3 hours. it was shown that marijuana users have a 4.8-fold increase in the risk of heart attack the first hour after smoking

-Yet there is still not ONE SINGLE DEATH that can be associated to it.

"Numerous studies have shown marijuana smoke to contain carcinogens and to be an irritant to the lungs."

-Yes smoking a burning plant isn`t good, but weed isn`t terribly bad either, even chronic users have been seen to not develop any sort of lung problems.

The problem with marijuana studies is that they don`t take into account that users also tend to smoke cigarettes, and drink alcoh

Not the only reason. Others are:
    1. You have to be a criminal (willing to break the law) to smoke pot. From that the step to other forbidden drugs is not so big.
    2. Information and education about hemp is mostly biased (and frequently outright lies are taught).
Once you discover that little of what you`ve been told is true, you don`t believe the (more accurate) warnings about other drugs.

I call BS on some of these statements. However, if cannibis was so widely used in the past and in our United States so much, why did they ever make it illegal? There had to have been a good reason, as major change in this world is hard to accomplish. Furthermore, why don`t they use it for paper and as a fuel already if it is infact that effective?

Also, a very IMPORTANT NOTE ON THIS:
It is also untrue, simply because they assume a correlation means cause and effect. They look at heavy drug users, and they see that many of them use(d) marijuana, OF COURSE THEY DID, marijuana use is widespread.
Also, over 80% (or more, this fact should be checked) of people using marijuana, use ONLY MARIJUANA

It is illegal, at least in the US because of a fellow named Harry J Anslinger, he stigmatized it and used propaganda films in the 1930`s to get a nation to make it illegal. He blamed marijuana on the problem of poor immigrant workers from mexico, and thereby stigmatized BOTH the plant, and the immigrants (this was after the great depression, remember).
Also, lobbyism and such as kept it illegal, imagine how big the paper industry is, or ANY other industry that this plant will REPLACE, for a less cost. It`s all about the money...

carma234, yes, but the economic effect of ECONOMIES OF SCALE would allow for a lower cost, and therefore a lower PRICE to the users. A private growing booth would simply not be worth it. Even if it was, would you go to the trouble to save a few dollars, spending months, money and time doing. Most people wouldn`t, it would only be done on a hobby basis. And you could certainly not sell it on, as I explained, larger institutions would outprice you...

I call BS on some of these statements....

The original outlawing of weed started back in 1910 when Utah outlawed it due to Mormons getting high.

But, due to tensions with Mexican-Americans, other states slowly began to prohibit it. Finally, Harry J. Anslinger became head of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics in 1930, realizing two things:

-Hemp was a viable competitor to Anslinger`s timber industry money.

-Mandates on opiates and cocaine weren`t enough to further his power as head of the bureau; making hemp illegal would spread his influence out enough to keep him in power.

Most of the propaganda they spread to pass anti-weed laws was centered around making Mexicans sound crazy with their "loco weed" and scientific research was kept quiet; politicians didn`t read the facts before they passed anti-weed laws.

... and politics. The ban on hemp is a worldwide treaty and hemp is only a smaller part of it. Its mostly about opium and I guess no politician is going to touch that in the near future.
Some countries have found holes for industial use, tollaration of medical use or small size personal recreational use, but nowhere (I know of) is hemp fully legal.

The one thing everyone pro and con seem to forget about the canibis plant is that if it is grown in colder climates, such as Virginia, the hemp fibers are stronger but the THC level (the drug in marijuana that makes you high) is so low, it would not be an effective crop for smoking. On the other hand, the crops grown in Hawaii (Hawaiian thai stick), mexico (dirt weed) and places like florida and Jamaca where the climate is much warmer, the thc leve would get you really high, but the fibers for hemp would not be very strong and therefor not a marketable product for hemp products. Either you grow it for rope, or for drugs. You can`t do both.

Hmm what other plant is being grown for fuel?! The up side of using hemp instead of corn is that weed is not a significant food source for many nations and therefore would not inversely cause a food shortage to these people.

Cure - well... heres the thing with that. #1 there has been some recent documentation showing a correlation between marijuana use and shrinkage of brain tumors. #2 there is a significant relationship between nutrition and the ability for the body to heal it self (I won`t even delve into the bigger issue on that one) for some people with chronic illness using pot is the only way the can eat. Before someone makes a comment about munchies marijuana is also an anti-emetic.

I vote for legalization just on the simple fact that weed is no worse then alcohol. Plus all the billions of dollars a year we will be saving in the housing of criminals with pot related offenses. Then we can finally concentrate our efforts of Anti-Drug programs on drugs that are actually bad. It would save allot of money, create allot of money and make a new industry in a time when it`s desperately needed.

I am 100% for the legalization of hemp. However I will say your references are absolutely correct; ~smoking ANYTHING will cause lung damage the same carcinogens also increase risk for MIs (vaporizers are considered lung friendly, and the studies show no harm from eating or drinking thc)

~metal illness has a variety of forms from anxiety to psychosis, each one may be exasperated by different chemical be is caffeine, alcohol, or THC

I`m totally for legalizing pot. However, hemp may be "environmentally friendly" but it could never be sustainably used as a fuel source for the whole world. For this to happen it would be competing with food crops for usable agriculture land. However, biomass from other production processes using hemp could be used as PART of the total biomass needed for sustainable energy production.
    Just saying...

The reason hemp could be used as our fuel supply is because it grows so quick and has so little agricultural damage to the earth it grows on that if we used all the space we use for tree farming for hemp growning we would easily be able to sustain our energy needs.

Of course it`s no miracle plant. Simply a highly useful plant. It grows very quickly with little resources, causes almost no environmental damage, and has a multitude of uses.

To use a basic example, hemp vs cotton for clothing. Hemp can produce upwards of 4 times the usable fiber of cotton on the same amount of land, while using less water and no pesticides. The clothing has better insulating ability, better water resistance, and is resistant to mold.

    patticakes,

I challenge you to show one independent (non-government funded) report or study that shows that marijuana usage causes cancer.

You show your own propaganda induced ignorance on your last point: Bob Marley did NOT die from cancer induced from smoking weed. He died from acral lentiginous melanoma, a form of malignant melanoma, in a wound reportedly picked up in a friendly football match which metastasized and spread to his lungs and brain.

George Harrison did die of lung cancer that had metastasized to his brain but he had been fighting cancer off and on for the last part of his life. He, himself, believed it was linked to his heavy tobacco smoking in the 60`s.

    Correlation does not prove causality.

Since most all studies are in one way or another connected to the government either through grants or through universities funded by the government that might be hard to do. Even If She, Or I, Did you may then claim it was paid for by an Anti-pot source, Thus rendering it`s conclusions null and void in your mind.

The reason it should be legalized is that doing so will take money out of the hands of gangs and give it to the government and people. Cut gangs off from a huge cash crop and bam, they lose some of their power. Prohibition saw gangs become the most powerful they had ever been in the history of America because they made so much money selling alchohol, and every time something in demand has been legalized gangs have lost some of their power.

And to the people that claim cannabis causes cancer, two things: First cannabis doesn`t cause cancer, smoking does. Second you don`t have to smoke cannabis, you can eat it.

Out of all the studies I`ve come across on marijuana smoking, they`ve all fallen into 1 of 2 categories.

    1. Marijuana smoke contains carcinogens (known cancer causing agents)

    -or-

    2. Smoking marijuana does not increase the likelihood of cancer (might even slightly lower the risk of cancer though not in a statistically significant amount.)

At first those two results seem contradictory but I don`t believe this is the case. While there is not denying that marijuana smoke does have cancer causing agents, it seems that the cancer fighting ability of THC (or other compounds in the smoke) completely counteract the carcinogens.

Harleq: "Words cannot express how retarded you are."

Luckily they CAN express how retarded YOU are:

CDC shows heroin deaths per year at ~2000. Cocaine, ~6000.

Want to guess how many alcohol related deaths? Or tobacco? Go look it up, brainiac.

The kind of Marajuana plants that you grow for agricultural reasons is not the same kind you can get high from. For some reason the government lumps the two kinds together... And NO I don`t smoke pot. I just read.

Using it in, say, chocolate cake mix, is a lot healthier than smoking it

only the female plants produce THC in any considerable amount. weed farmer (thc producing farms) plant the female crop with good space between and frequently trim them to produce a bushier plant with more growing tips (more buds) where a hemp farm uses mainly male plant planted in tight spaces, so the plants grow tall and thick competing for light
