I see it as, if someone just drank out of the glass then it`s half empty. But if someone just filled the glass up it`s half full. Does that mean I`m a realist?

Haha! Nice. According to this, I`m an optimist.

And I hate to bring this up again but it makes no sense to say "the glass is half empty", since the purpose of the glass is to hold liquid, its redundant to say how much air it contains.

I always thought that you would say half-full or half-empty in whichever direction it was going. If it was being emptied, then the glass would be half-empty. If it was being filled, then the glass can be considered half-full.

i never understood the pessimist vs optimist comparison. it seems backwards to me. shouldnt the pessimist see the glass as half-full? its not full, its only half-full. and the optimist should see it opposite of that, only half-empty.

Actually, no. A UCSD Psych professor named Craig McKenzie figured this one out. "Half-Full" and "Half-Empty" are NOT equal. If a glass is "Half-Full" that means it used to be empty and now it is half full. If it is "Half-Empty" it used to be full, now it is half empty.

Here`s how he proved that. Take a full glass and empty glass. Pour half the water from the full glass into the empty glass so they are both the same. Then say "hand me the half-full glass."

Almost everyone hands you the glass that used to be empty.

The economist would say that.... in real terms, the glass is 25% fuller than at the same time last year.

The psychiatrist would ask.... "What did your mother say about the glass?"

The banker would say that the glass has just under 50% of its net worth in liquid assets.

The Alcoholic would say that the glass doesn``t have enough ice in it.

I say this for pessimism. If you`re already prepared for failure, and you fail then it`s what you expected, If you succeed it`s a pleasant surprise.

If your an optimist then you`re prepared for success and if you succeed than it`s only what you expected, If you fail you are unpleasantly depressed that you failed.

Personally, I`d rather be a pessimist. Pleasant surprise is better than unpleasant depression any day.

Physicist: The glass is full, half water and half air.

The Alcoholic: It doesn`t matter if the glass is half full or half empty, as long as there are many glasses.

The Dictator: "Everyone has a glass that is half full, or half empty, but you all have to give that glass to me."

The Engineer: "The glass is twice the size it needs to be!"

    Sadist:

The Psychologist: "...and how does the glass FEEL about the water?"

Waterboarding survivor: "Get that vile stuff away from me!"

The Militarist: "I could kill several people with this glass...."
