In my opinion, it depends on whether you were pouring water in or out. What does that make me?

@sourkrauter: I suppose the glass will soon be completely empty to you.
Realist/Solipsist (HOW???) Either that`s a glass, or none of you exist.

I`m more of a glass half empty - not due to my pessimism, but to my slight alcoholism.

I like that :D

The glass is currently containing 50% of the fluid volume it is capable of containing.

That`s realist, right? Or is it just pedantic?

what about if you half fill a glass, put a beer mat on top and turn it upside down? - then the water is at the top technically but there is air at the bottom...

That`s my philosophy

whether the glass is half empty or half full is dependent on how it was previously. If you put water into it, its half full, if you take water out of it, its half empty.

I say this for pessimism. If you`re already prepared for failure, and you fail then it`s what you expected, If you succeed it`s a pleasant surprise.

If your an optimist then you`re prepared for success and if you succeed than it`s only what you expected, If you fail you are unpleasantly depressed that you failed.

Personally, I`d rather be a pessimist. Pleasant surprise is better than unpleasant depression any day.

The economist would say that.... in real terms, the glass is 25% fuller than at the same time last year.

The psychiatrist would ask.... "What did your mother say about the glass?"

The banker would say that the glass has just under 50% of its net worth in liquid assets.

The Alcoholic would say that the glass doesn``t have enough ice in it.
i never understood the pessimist vs optimist comparison. it seems backwards to me. shouldnt the pessimist see the glass as half-full? its not full, its only half-full. and the optimist should see it opposite of that, only half-empty.
Actually, no. A UCSD Psych professor named Craig McKenzie figured this one out. "Half-Full" and "Half-Empty" are NOT equal. If a glass is "Half-Full" that means it used to be empty and now it is half full. If it is "Half-Empty" it used to be full, now it is half empty.

Here`s how he proved that. Take a full glass and empty glass. Pour half the water from the full glass into the empty glass so they are both the same. Then say "hand me the half-full glass."

Almost everyone hands you the glass that used to be empty.

I always thought that you would say half-full or half-empty in whichever direction it was going. If it was being emptied, then the glass would be half-empty. If it was being filled, then the glass can be considered half-full.

i see the glass half full OR empty, depending on what action brought it to such a state

Male 10,440
Haha! Nice. According to this, I`m an optimist.

And I hate to bring this up again but it makes no sense to say "the glass is half empty", since the purpose of the glass is to hold liquid, its redundant to say how much air it contains.
