It sounds like a thousand soul getting ready to be dropped in the depth of hell, and then the fiery door opens and they are dropped, and then it`s utter and absolute silence!

">It`s just you. The glowing on the stick is arcing, the sounds is steam escaping the still-green stick, the steam is produced via ohmic heating, and the final large arc is pretty standard fare in >100kV lines.

flingspoo "Aren`t those things supposed to be insulated?"

No. That would make them much more expensive and much heavier requiring closer tower spacing. They are insulated from the towers and poles where they connect, but other than that, the only insulation is air.

When all three power lines are connected (via the tree branch) this is one of the worst failures you can have. The same electrical effect can be created using a Jacob`s Ladder:

Jacob`s Ladder effect

Yeah... its neat and everything, but someone DEFINATELY threw that branch there.

Which prolly knocked out the supply to what, a whole neighbourhood? a whole town? Maybe the entire east coast.

The branch is green wood, with a lot of moisture in it. As the electricity passes through the branch, the moisture heats up to the boiling point, and the branch whistles like a teakettle as steam escapes. As soon as the branch dries out enough, it catches fire, and this causes it to carbonize, enough to conduct an arc, which is a short-circuit made of plasma. The arc rises due to the heating of the air, and then a fuse or circuit breaker disconnects the power from the line.

Some roosterbag threw that branch up there it looks like. I would be a murderous fool if my power went out because of that.

Ha yeah it really just fell on there all on it`s own and conveniently someone just happened to catch it on film. More like someone got a camera and tossed it up there so they could film the results lol.

"I just...imagined...a squirrel..."

I saw the aftereffects of that very thing. I went to a guy`s house to pick up a car I was buying from him and when we were talking outside there was a huge "BOOM!!!" from behind the house and his wife hollered from inside, "WTF was that?! The lights just went out!" We all went behind the house and found a well-cooked squirrel on the ground under the power line. Apparently it crossed from one line to the other and got zapped. We could see the path of the electricity burned onto it`s body. It went diagonally from front to back, singed the hair off a narrow strip of the belly and exited at the hind leg. The leg was blown apart at the top but there was no blood, the shock must have instantly cauterized it. Yeah, it was gross and it smelled bad, but that squirrel never knew what hit it. Instant death.

hehe, batmanners is right. sadly i`m not an electric nerd tho, a shame really. air was probably ionized or something allowing the electricity to follow the path of least resistance through it. *shrug*

It`s caused by the differences in the current and voltage in the wire. You get fried by the current not being able to ground itself, because it`s running into another current that`s a different voltage.

batmanners, wouldn`t that just be an electrical fire? An electric arc would be a direct jump of electricity from one spot to another (from the clouds to ground in lightnings case)

in this case, the direct path would be the stick, so . . .

"Is the blue stuff at the end plasma?"

Nope, it`s what`s called an electric arc. It`s the same as lightning, technically.

I didn`t pay attention in all my workplace safety videos, so I don`t know all the science behind it, though wiki will teach me one day. But I am sure some electrician nerd will come on here boasting about his big electric arcs that were "That big" stories...

Cool! An electric arc!

There must have been something peculiar about that branch, wet, or something because wood isn`t the best conductor, despite those being high tension wires. Assuming they are high tension from the third cable, but the low altitude tells me they may just be medium or even low tension.
