This College Student Was Arrested In Her Class

Submitted by: porky pig 7 years ago in

Did her throwing a water bottle in class warrant this manhandling in front of her classmates?

No, throwing a watter bottle does not warrant the manhandling. Resisting arrest does.

Clearly, yes. Sheesh.
Black people thrive off of their aggressive genetics. Fact. It`s only when their blood is tampered with other races that their fighting behavior wanes.

Shnard- until certain racial groups can STOP pointing out how different they ARE and STOP continuing the stereotypes they have established for themselves, I highly doubt anyone else will see them differently either.

Unfortunately, certain groups feel they HAVE to act certain ways. And, as you can see, being ghetto with that particular attitude I can`t stand (out of respect for other humans, in general) and thinking you`re ENTITLED to everything (She MADE me get all disrespectful) is working great for her.

Forgot to add a little extra to 1.
Don`t forget that the student was also being a disruption to class and wasting the other students` time and money spent into these pooty courses.

To put it in a little further clarity. How would you like it if some drat was a disruption to a class you paid 400+ to learn from? You`d want to shoot the bastard.

I caught that too and I don`t know anything about pins :(
Could be better reinforcement than holding the thigh, he could have also been "feeling" her out since keeping her hands behind her back and a knee to the small of her back minimizes any leverage she could have.

Well, to be frank, this is a teacher-student environment, not a peer-to-peer. Whatever the teacher says, goes. IF the teacher is out of line, you are able to file a grievance complaint.
2. Did the cops honestly feel it necessary to tackle her to the ground?
Seems rough, doesn`t it? Usually, you want to subdue the person instead of slowly increasing force. With a quick subduction, there is a mighty less margin of injury, compared to the student pulling away then swinging away with her fists.

@ Strangedays - So let me get this straight, some girl from your school who has a "Black sounding name" filled out a form differently and got less money. Yup, I`m convinced that Black`s have it much better.

I guess I prefer actual research studies that are based on actual scientific methodology rather than the kind that start with "A girl who goes to my college...", the kind that show how African Americans continue to be less likely to be hired for jobs compared to Whites, get paid less for doing the same job as Whites, are continued to be denied access to buying homes or renting in desireable areas (which is illegal now, but still happens all of the time) just to name a few examples. Before you spout off about how persons of color have it so much better than Whites in this country, try doing some research.

Or scale it up more. Some country is on the warpath with 100,000 soldiers, 1000 tanks and 100 planes.

Which is better:

Match them and go to war to defend yourself.

Bring a million soldiers, 10,000 tanks and 1,000 planes and order them to stand down and shut up because they can`t win.

In any conflict, an overwhelming advantage reduces the harm that the conflict does.
3 men was totally uncalled for though, seriously? Unless, they are the 3 weakest men in the universe.
A common misconception. If you want to take someone down with as little injury as possible, you make it as much of a mismatch as possible. So the use of 3 (or however many are available) coppers is deliberate policy in order to *reduce* the chance of injury (both to the coppers and the person they`re arresting).

The principle always applies. Say, for example, you needed to restrain an adult equal to you in strength, speed, training, etc, and you had to do it by yourself. You might have to knock them out. You`d certainly end up injuring them. Now imagine the same scenario with 3 of you. Much easier to do without a fight and therefore with much less chance of injuring them.

she was verbally abusive and should have left. The cops should not have shoved her to the ground like that or even made any physical contact. And because she was apparently packing up her things I don`t think she meant what she said about having to be carried out. Cops should have more common sense and while throwing a water bottle is violent, she was not being violent in the sense that she needed to leave in cuffs.
Also I read the news articles so I`m not basing my opinion on this vid alone.

Lol she shoulda let that go and made a complaint later but at the whole black women can`t let ish go its not black women its just some people in general you see it all the time. I go to an international university all types of people all colors men and women every once in a while someone takes a disagreement with the teacher too far during class time, its a lack of respect for teachers that seems to be an issue more than race. I`ve never seen the police called before though, but her cursing at other student did escalate it further.

1) 3 Cops is too many!

-Three may not be necessary, but it will often be sufficient in such situations.

2) She didn`t need to be cuffed!

-It`s standard procedure. Also, the cops don`t know exactly what has happened prior to their arrival.

3) She didn`t need to be tackled!

-Her skirmish when the cop first tried to cuff her (no matter how small) constitutes resisting arrest. This is sufficient for a forceful take-down.

4) RACISM!

-Seriously?

4)a) But the cops were white males!

-So if a white male cop sees a black woman commit a murder, it would be racist and sexist for him to arrest her?

These seem to be the most common arguments against. If there are more, I`m sure you`ll make sure I know.

Why does it always seem like its the black women who can`t shut up? Is it a pride thing? Do you really have to dig at the subject and get the last word to feel proud of yourself, so you can tell your friends later that you told someone off? I`m not saying that its specifically just black women, but it sure seems like 9 times out of 10 that I see this happening that its a black woman who tells the other person to let it go but won`t let it go herself.

Continuing my post incase anyone`s wondering how the state found out she was not black... when you apply for student aid filling out your race is optional. She didn`t fill it out one year, but did the next year. She got $9000 less because of this.

@Shnard-dog:
Being black actually does have some advantages. For example, a girl goes to my college, her name is Keisha, but she is white. By looking at the name, it sounds black. The state gave her a $12,000 grant per year because of her name, but once they found out she was white it was taken away. Yeah, I`d say reverse racism is alive and well in today`s society.
This girl deserved it. Doesn`t matter what color she is. She was being loud and obnoxious, threatening her classmates and cussing out the teacher.

She deserved what she got. You don`t go blaming other people for your actions (ie: "YOU are making me act like this). Had she shut up a long time ago and went to the instructor`s superiors it could have been handled efficiently. Instead she acted like a child and obviously had history threatening people in the class, according to the dialogue that is.

@LtFurpie: I just meant, the whole situation should have been dissolved way before the professor felt the cops needed to be brought in. Professor could`ve diffused it better, Main antagonist (being in college) should`ve known how to act properly in a learning environment (i.e. not like you would in a riot). And when the police got there she should`ve just left. I agree the police did their job.

She`s an idiot. If you`ve got a problem with your teacher, or your class you file a formal complaint. It`s one thing if it`s an open debate, but this wasn`t. Then she resisted the cops trying to remove her. I`ve got no special love for the cops, but she`s not gonna win that battle, so just do what they say for Christ`s sake. I hope this dumb girl gets expelled over this, then she might think twice about being a moron next time.

This almost happened at my college in Algebra class. People need to act like adults. Also, her paying for the schooling does not mean she can assault people with her personal belongs while on campus.

If someone did this at my college they would be expelled immediately.

In my opinion the color of her skin has nothing to do with this. She was acting like an immature 15 year old and paid dearly for it. She should grow up and treat her peers with respect.

This situation was handled badly all around. But I think that chick brought it on herself with her pooty attitude. She didn`t have to antagonize everyone, and clearly she was threatening more than one person in the room. I don`t think she had to be tackled and cuffed, but that was her choice when she said that they`d have to carry her out, instead of leaving like they asked. Calling the police in wasn`t a bad idea--she wasn`t leaving voluntarily, despite being asked multiple times by the professor. Meh, you reap what you sow.

If you pretend to have a different position depending on who you reply to, you don`t have any position at all other than "troll".

You can`t disagree with my position, because you don`t know (and probably don`t care) what my position is. Of course, since you define and judge people on the colour of their skin, you could be disagreeing with me because you assume my skin is the "wrong" colour.

Ehr, no. she resisted arrest. "you`re gonna have to carry my ass out". remember that part? she refused to go with the police volentarily. the police is not there to argue with you and they are not there to listen to your point of view. when you are around a policeofficer. everything you say will be taken 100% seriusly and treated 100% seriusly.
-They wanted her to leave.

-She said they had to carry her if she was to leave.

-Officer sees that as threatning. take actions.

anyway, i hate other students like this. I just lose my respect when people do like that. dammit people. just listen to your teacher. talk to her outside the classroom as he/she will listen to you then.

It`s a controlled takedown. Using fewer people only reduces control and increases the chance of injury to the person being taken down. Think 3 is a lot? I`ve seen psych workers do an 8 on 1.

If she had a problem with the course coordinators answer, then she should have discussed that with them after class or aranged to meet later. It`s rude and inconsiderate to subject the rest of your class to that sort of behavior, particularly telling another one of them to "shut up bitch". Colleges and Universities have proceedures in place to remark papers etc.

She behaved poorly, and was dealt with accordingly. I say fair enough.

Why is this a race thing? The long and short of it that people who see this as a race thing are in themselves racists because this is what they consider "acting black" and wanna see people get away with.

If that`s how all the black people I knew acted I`d be a racist.

LolBoy - "Have you stopped to consider that the reason blacks are "targeted" so much is because the commit crimes. I dont believe this is because of race, but like mentioned earlier, growing up in an environment where that kind of mentality is necessary."

So you aren`t denying that persons of color are at a disadvantage in the U.S.? If they are in environments where committing crimes is necessary, it seems there would be a reason why this is the case. I would argue that centuries of institutionally racist policies have prevented persons of color, particularly African Americans, from having the same access to opportunity as Whites. Though not as overt, this clearly continues in present day. If the expectation is that Blacks are dangerous and prone to commiting crimes (like you say), isn`t it plausible that those cops were a bit more quick to tackle and cuff her than if she were White?

Shnard-dog (Whatever that means): You`re being just as ignorant. Have you stopped to consider that the reason blacks are "targeted" so much is because the commit crimes. I dont believe this is because of race, but like mentioned earlier, growing up in an environment where that kind of mentality is necessary.

If anyone grows up in that environment, they will more than likely wind up in jail, regarless of race.

Angilion (whatever that means) "Oh, except for lots of them, including the most famous. Don`t tase me!"

I`m not even sure how to respond to your ignorance, but the reality is that persons of color are targeted by police far more than Whites. Nearly one in every 10 Black men in the U.S. is in prison versus 1 in every 100 White men. The vast majority of cops are White.... even you can do that math. Let go of your defensiveness for two seconds and try to see beyond what is convenient for you to believe.

Oh grow up... I hate people like you, who see the world as all sunshine and daisies, and that you shouldn`t be allowed to stop something at the "high potential" phase, as opposed to the "full blown" phase.

Seriously. Taking this out of the videos context, are you saying that a cop should only be allowed to use force when they have a gun aimed at them, or the perp is flailing his knife?

An officer`s official duty in this type of situation is to prevent things from escalating to the point where someone gets hurt.

If someone willingly volunteers to get some bruises ("you`re gonna have to drag me out") for that to work out, then you can damn well bet they`re gonna get some bruises.

1. Maybe she threw the water bottle before the video was started. We cannot see anything that happened prior to the video.
2. Your rights do not need to be read at the time of your arrest. They need to be read if you are under arrest and they are interrogating you.

@alisia: Brutality? Where? I saw no nightsticks, guns, tasers... They responded quite appropriately to the circumstances. Especially when a major goal is to keep things from escalating and endangering themselves, the girl, or any of the other students. If they could only use force `if they were being threatened`, wouldn`t you end up with a verbal stalemate? If a police officer issues a lawful command (in this case to leave with them) they have every right to use force to arrest, detain, make compliant, etc.... And if the command turns out not to be lawful, that`s for the judge to decide, not the girl.

I think everyone`s forgetting one key thing. The girl obviously comes from an area were slang and aggressive body postures are used (e.g the city). So, she might actually be talking generally to the teacher and her class mates, but because shes been put in an awkward situation and feels she is in the right, she naturally reverts back to the style of speech she is most comfortable with.
A lot of adults mistake this sort of thing for aggression. I don`t condone the girls behavior, as the smart thing to do to start with is sit the drat down and shut the drat up, but its good to remember some people have less common sense.

Dude. Police Brutality! This poo annoys me to death. Police are civil servants who are supposed to understand there are irrational people out there and deal with them accordingly. Not jump to wrestling them to the ground. They should only be allowed to illicit force if they`re being threatened. They could have tried discussing it with her before hand. Only the teacher was talking to her and had actually almost calmed her down. I hope she uses this video in her defense if the state even gives her one! Public defenders are a joke, they trick people into pleading guilty and accepting whatever a DA throws at them.

Only necessary if they wanted anything she said to be admissible in court.

They can use her spontaneous outbursts in court without Miranda. They are only required to read Miranda if she is under Custodial Interrogation i.e. not free to leave and being questioned. Absent questioning, anything she says can be used in court.

i agree with what most people have said here, not only was she being disruptive but she was also being rude and in a way that was entirely inappropriate for the class room, she obviously had no intention to learn in the class as you can see from the fact that she is playing with her phone at the start of the video, the teacher was definately right to ask to leave the classroom, also when the girl refused to leave the teacher was right to call for support of some form. In this school or colleges case it would appear to be what I assume are on sight police officers, these then ask the girl to move and when she tells them that they`ll have to carry her out they do their job and do exactly that. As far as I see it the only one doing anything wrong here is the girl, she was given plenty of chances to act like a civilized human being and she turned down all those chances and was so removed when she refused to do so voluntarily. If she had been polite none of this would of happened.

NO. You don`t just ignore a disruption, you deal with it or it will get worse. Cursing - repeatedly - at an instructor and being insubordinate in class is probably grounds for expulsion under the student code of conduct.

Don`t be so reactionary. This bitch was disruptive as hell. College credits cost $$$, I`d be pissed if she wasted my time, cursing and threatening students. When she saw the cops, rather than get up and leave - like any calm, rational person would have - she said she wouldn`t and that they would have to force her out.

SHE LITERALLY ASKED FOR IT. They weren`t going to arrest her but for her stated intent to not leave.

Entirely justified. I missed something - other than her being black, how is race a factor at all?

She was beligerent and disruptive. She refused to leave when asked, and in fact cursed and continued to disrupt the class.

Then, when she sees police, she said she wouldn`t leave and they would have to wrestle her (or something to that effect). Then she struggled when the attempted to remove her.

People who struggle against the police always blow my mind. How is that EVER going to work out well???

If she would have left, she wouldn`t have been arrested. She`s an idiot.

"When you are under arrest, they have to put you in cuffs. It`s part of it. Why do people always fight? Put your hands behind your back, go with them and sort it out afterward."

That`s my philosophy.

Due to a few "unfortunate" incidents involving people I hang around with, I`ve actually been taken in three times.

All three times I calmly went along, and quickly proceeded to talk my way out of anything they might have brought against me.

It`s the stupid people who fight and antagonize that end up getting hurt, then scream "excessive force" and garner a whole boat-load of sympathy from people who only listen to half the story.

Like with this particular IAB description.

Shnard-Dog, NOT ONLY is this not a race issue, since no matter what race they are people need to learn when to stop running their mouth, something she clearly didn`t (which is something I could quickly make a race-issue but won`t right now), but the teacher also states, MULTIPLE TIMES if you listen to HER, that she was just going to "talk about it later," and other things along those lines.

As for those people saying there was no need to call the cops...

The teacher politely asked the student to leave the premises. The student refused. The premises are owned by the people who run the college, and they give professors the right to kick students out, right?

That means she was effectively trespassing, a crime that the cops can be called for.

She should have just left the class when her teacher told her to. She could yell and curse while she was doing it though. If she has a problem with the teacher, then she should have gone to the dean or principal. Disturbing the class isn`t going to get her anywhere.

I agree that the student could have made her point in a more appropriate way, but so too could have the teacher. It seemed to me the teacher could have let the issue rest until another time, but kept pressing the issue. Since when did disagreeing with someone lead to being thrown to the ground and cuffed? Because those rights come with responsibility, and there is a time and a place for freedom of speech. When you impinge on the rights of other people (in this case, by deliberately interrupting the learning of other students), you are failing to live up to the responsibility that is inherent in freedom of speech.

I don`t think it should be made into a race issue. I do think calling the police was a bit extreme. With that said, why is it that some people who are being arrested physically resist but say the opposite of their actions? Seems to me some people think that if they say "I`m cooperating" out loud for people to hear, they can use that in their defense, even though they are physically resisting the cops and not automatically doing what the cops are telling them to do. To them, they`re thinking it will get them out of trouble and will be their excuse to say they were unreasonably targeted and were brutally handled.

to mogman45: i don`t think opinions would change, but i do think that if the race of the person was changed, that it would be less likely to be on the news.
