most of the food at my school aren`t all that bad, some of it is really good, like the BBQ sausage sandwich.

my poor godson decided to have school lunch last year. his family is mostly vegetarian and he only eats non-meats at school (we hope). keeping his regular activities (playing outside, homework schedule, ect) he gained weight. now I`m looking at a seven year old boy with moobs and two love handles. the worst part is when he first started school, they sent home a note about what foods NOT to send you kid to school with (like junk foods and such). hypocritical bastards. we started making him lunches again.

The pizza`s crust at our school is a very dark brown, instead of a light brown/cream, which makes me think it is cardboard.

And the cheese to sauce ratio is all messed up.

The hamburgers at our school bounced, and the vegetables squealed in pain when stabbed with a fork..
And the hospital food... that stuff would try to eat you -.^

"A lot of these kids I work with are poor, so they aren`t packed lunches," she said"

I`m lucky :/ where I`m at my school has several small "shops" and at least you can get wilted salads, semi fresh fruit, those crustable sandwhiches and baked chips, not really a lot of healthy hot options though...but I am a fan of the disgusting nachos...

I went to a very high-end public school and ate lunches there every single day. Honestly, what they served was better than a packed lunch. We were lucky, there were many choices everyday. I recall the worst thing they had was the daily peanutbutter and jelly sandwhich which was about 95% bread, 4% peanut butter and 1% jelly. Sometimes it was 0% jelly.
But there were baked potatoes, salads, and pizza everyday along with the daily entree. No soda or juice, but there was milk, flavored milk, and for some reason Fruitopia, which I absolutely hate.

they could pack a lunch chunky however if you read it through it says a lot of the kids from that school are poor and can`t afford to pack a lunch.

I used to like our school lunches, however I was in school in the mid 70s and 80s It seems like lunches now adays are much more different than they were when I was in school heck we even used reusable trays and bowls none of the throw away ones.
I grew up in a very small town too, we really didn`t have soda machines and we only had chocolate milk and ice cream offered to us once a week.

Ugh. I hate school lunch, I never eat it :/ I just skip lunch and wait until I get home to eat. Cause that stuff is just gross. I mean, I had a hamburger once, and the cheese had a GREEN tinge too it, GREEN!

I always brought a lunch from home in school. The cafeteria food was passable, but I preferred to just pack a sandwich, rather than play the roulette of "will the school lunch be edible today?" In college now, I do eat the campus food, and it varies. We have a good cafeteria, but there is also a lot of fast food on campus. Sometimes I go for fast food just because there is little variety if you eat at the cafeteria for every meal, every day. I wish we had more options.

Ooh, East Baton Rouge Parish schools got called out! I went to school the next parish over, so I never tried theirs, but I remember I was always finding.. foreign items.. in my food. Plastic, bits of Brillo pads, a piece of carton. Better than finding roaches, I suppose (which seemed to be frequent in my middle school days). Most of the food we were served tasted okay, though. Not great, just okay.

Well let me put it this way. I went to school and ate the lunch if you can even call it food. I also went to jail once (County) and I can tell you right now I would rather eat the food in jail than eat another school lunch. The jail food was surprisingly decent and about twice the size of a school lunch. So basically they feed out prisoners better than our children...

True story from my 4th grade year. I looked over at my friend who was eating the school lunch while I had packed lunches that year and I said you actually eat that sh*t all the while the principal was standing behind me listening. Dad wasn`t very happy with me when I got home that day.

When I was in grade school (private), and high school (public), both schools had in-house cafeterias and kitchens.

grade school felt more "homey", simply because there was maybe 300 meals being served per day. Food was cooked in smaller batches, and there was very little processed foods, except for the hamburger patties (the buns were baked at the school) and the "chicken" rings. They stopped serving those after they ran out, simply because of the outbreak of students calling them chicken sphincters. Seriously, what other part of a chicken is in a ring?

In high school, there were 2 lines - a "fast food" line - burgers, chicken sandwiches, pizza, french fries; and an "a la carte" line, where you had a choice of two entrees, and two side dishes. While this had a more institutional feel to it, it was nothing like the lowest bidder, pre-packaged, tv-dinner meals that seem to be the way some of these school districts choose to save m

I was just talking about this with my husband. I remember in our senior year (4yrs ago) when our school started serving 3 bread sticks and cheese as the main meal. Absolutely pathetic. I grew up as a child who depended on the school to provide my nutrition, my family was poor and my mom didn`t have her priorities straight. I feel bad for the children in that position now.
