Christians don`t need extremists to give them a bad name. And I think in this case it`s the bible that is getting a bad name. Eventually they`ll have to change the bible so much due to absurd dogma like this that their version of christianity will be indistinguishable from the original and they won`t be able to call themselves christians anymore. So abandon this silly charade now or all you christians will just fade into obscurity and irrelevance. You have 48 hours to comply.

They should kill the whale. All things being fair we hunt down and kill pit bulls and bears that maul people. Why not killer whales? Seaworld is nothing but a giant corporation worried about profits so they claim freeing the whale would be the equivalent of a death sentence. I think the Whale earned that death sentence. Free him.

That whale should DEFINITELY be taken care of, but not killed. The least they could do is separate it from others and take it out of the show (even though they wont do that cause this particular whale brings in too much business), the best they could do is release it. Its old, its killed 3 people in its captive life... it could do well in the wild.

It`s a KILLER Whale, what exactly did they expect it to do? Plus, it is a wild animal, in captivity, but wild all the same. I think the animal trainers forgot this fact and became to relaxed around the whale resulting in the animal acting as nature had originally intended.

ScottSerious, to be fair a dog is a domestic animal that can`t really be set free because it probably wouldn`t survive long in the wild, and they don`t want to re-home the animal either. A whale is perfectly capable of surviving in the wild, and by putting it in the wild, won`t cause any more issues with humans.

I think an appropriate punishment would be banishment. Open his tank up to the wide open ocean and tell him to never come back.

In fact, I think the whole species should be punished. Banish them all to the open ocean.

It`s a wild animal, release it into the wild. And for the point that dogs are put down for biting owners; you can`t release a dog into the wild for various reasons and so there really is no alternative. If killer whales were domesticated animals that couldn`t be released into the wild, then putting them down would be the correct option, but that`s not the case here.

As for the religious side of this - Stoning? C`mon now. Also, I would interpret the scripture they sited as a death threat against the manager guy.

Why can`t they just put it back in the ocean? If it dies, well too bad, it would have died in the wild eventually anyway. It if lives, yay for it, but we never have to deal with it again.

Skooby Doom, many killer whales have been rehabilitated and released into the wild. I live perhaps 20 minutes from the SeaWorld in San Diego and I read in the paper maybe once a month about a killer whale being successfully released.

Dogs are domestic, but they have absolutely no problem without humans. have you ever heard of a dog starving to death because they did not know how to survive? of course not. There are stray dogs and wild dogs that survive on their own in almost any environment. This is because they are at the top of the natural food chain everywhere except sub-saharan Africa.
Whales are very different. They are not at the top, sharks and other pods of whales are competition that can be dangerous to a released whale`s food supply. read up on what happened to the Orca that starred in the Free Willy movie. It was raised in captivity and was released into the wild after the movie. It starved to death in less than a year.
the difference is that captive whales don`t learn their survival instinct when they live in a sterile tank their whole lives, it would be like if you kept a dog in a blank room its whole life.

Your kinda wrong on both parts of that. Dogs that have been abandoned commonly find and form packs even in urban areas. And as for the whales, the only account I`ve heard of is the one of "free willy" (I forget his name). He was released into the wild. Swam up to iceland I believe, and took a harbour as his home (alot of experts say, looking for human interaction). He ended up dieing because his immune system couldn`t fight off the problems that come with water around human settlements. Also, they need to learn to hunt. If they don`t, they`ll starve.

Volsunga, where, then, do you propose domesticated dogs be released? I wouldn`t argue that they cannot survive on their own, for the reasons you stated, but we don`t release dogs because there`s no way to eliminate their threat to humans. You can find some forest or abandoned farmland or something, but that doesn`t guarantee that the dogs won`t come into contact with other people. So for pragmatic purposes, releasing dogs into the wild is not a viable solution.

You may be right about killer whales, however, because the ones I have heard of being released into the wild were saved as baby or injured whales, and thus were capable of learning to survive.

Kill the whale humanly. People in the poll actually voted to keep it alive but take more precautions, shouldn`t Seaworld have taken immediate precaution after the first time, let alone after the second time? If not put down, Seaworld is evidentially being irresponsible keeping this animal captivity. I guess we`ll decide what to do with it later after it kills someone else.

" Um. Does anyone else...see...that`s it`s name is...

    KILLER WHALE. "

Actually, Killer whales aren`t whales at all. They are orca`s from the delphinidae family. They are first cousins to dolphins. They get their name because they form hunting groups to kill young whales traveling with their mothers from South America to Alaska. While one group fights the mother, the other group breaks off and goes after the baby. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fmx8OaqTq...

These aren`t just acts of violence, but more importantly, shows how smart the delphinidae genus actually is. Which is why people pay a ton of money every year to see them perform. Freeing the orca won`t make a difference, in fact freeing him will probably get him killed in the wild `cause he`s been in captivity so long. Instead we should just shut down places like Seaworld and zoos. But we won`t, not as long as people wanna see animals

It would be nice if PETA got involved. Perhaps take Seaworld to court on the animals behalf. Clear to me a 60 year life sentence in a pool of whale piss for a corporations profit is cruelty and shouldn`t be tolerated by a civil society. Maybe a boycott of Seaworld would make the message plain.

Agreed. Besides all the trainers would realise the risks of getting close to those sort of animals anyway. On top of the fact that Tilly has a history of violent behaviour, the trainer who was killed took a risk and sadly got the short straw. Tilly shouldn`t be punished for doing what comes naturally.

And the obvious comment she`s a killer freaking whale. It`s in the name! : P

I could have sworn I`ve read about killer whales and such being released into the wild without a problem before, but I`ll admit I don`t know much about it lol.

However, I have my serious doubts that a domesticated dog could survive in a forest. Maybe it could survive in the suburbs where the only animals it needs to compete with are squirrels and house cats, but who wants an animal that has a history of hurting people released into their neighborhood?

Also, like a domestic dog is going to survive a Canadian winter without human aid.

I haven`t tested this first hand lol, but I still doubt it.

sure, an animal that probably didn`t even realize or can comprehend what its doing kills someone and panties go in a twist, yet there are human beings doing unspeakable acts to other innocent people and its all "human rights" and "ban death penalty" and other crap.

    Bahahahahaha. Wow.

... I am just thinking of ways you could kill a killer whale by stoning, and have the death be caused by stoning and the impacts from the stones alone...

Well, you can`t have a mob throw stones into a pool, because the stones would loose speed and merely sink. If you pull it out of the water, you`ve got a limited amount of time before it dehydrates. You`d need to kill it fast. The only way I can see this done is if the fundies hired a contractor with one of those giant diggers with the shovel that can hold a few tons of rock, then a crane to raise the animal onto land, and then drop a mountain of stones onto it in one go.

Of course they`d be legally required to surround the area with signs reading "warning, epic levels of stupidity ahead"

wow, people are very stupid. WE are the ones who put the whale IN the pool and made them trapped. WE decided to go into the water with them and try to train them, risking OUR life. If we shouldn`t allow ti to be near people, f`ing just let it go free.

Well, to an extent I agree with this. If a dog kills someone, you put it down.

This should go double for a killer whale. It`s clearly a threat.

Although I`ll concede it`s a little weird coming from the AMA (Not AFA?).

Because of that specific whale`s past history of injuries, and also because he`d been trained by trainers being out of the water, he performed only by himself. No trainers, not even other whales. On top of that, his only job was to swim out and splash people. The trainer that was killed was in about 3-feet deep water, and had a long dangling braid that Tilly caught. Although, even if she knew what would happen, she would still love the whale.

And sea world would never release Tilly, not only because after being in captivity for like 20 years, his chance of survival would be very slim, but also because he`s Sea World Orlando`s only male whale.

" Um. Does anyone else...see...that`s it`s name is...

    KILLER WHALE. "

Actually, Killer whales aren`t whales at all. They are orca`s (sic) from the delphinidae family. They are first cousins to dolphins.
    "

Aside from the fact that the operative word there was "killer", the delphinidae family falls under the order Cetacea, i.e. whales, so I suppose it all works out in the end...

Baalthazaq "If a dog kills someone, you put it down."

You shouldn`t hold a captive wild animal to the same behavioral standards as a domestic house pet. You don`t expect dogs to kill. Neither should you expect a killer whale to behave like a pet. They are top predators like tigers or wolves. Anyone who keeps a wild predator in captivity should be aware of the constant danger that they will revert to their natural behavior. It`s not the killer whale`s fault for being a killer. He didn`t get that name for nothing.

Yeah. this whale should totally be put to death everyone.

This whale totally made a commitment to be a sideshow act in a big tank that is completely the same as the ocean. An EXACT REPLICA!

This damn whale with it`s instincts to hunt and trap prey and swim miles in a day was completely cool to be in a not even mile long tank day after day doing tricks for treats. I mean after all it was in captivity on it`s own accord.

    Seriously. Put this menace down.

are they kidding? stoning? that`s terrible. i mean, in some circumstances i can understand putting an animal down, but in a humane, quick way. in this case, when the animal has been violent before, they should just put it in a pool away from the public. if they captured it in the wild, and the repeated violence hasn`t stopped them, they should have to house it with no profits.

elkingo, there`s a big difference that you seem to be missing, here. dogs are not wild animals. they have been domesticated for thousands of years. if a dog is vicious, it is because it is ill or has been trained to be that way. killing the dog is not about revenge (like, say, stoning?) it is about stopping the problem. killing is in the nature of an orca, they`re highly clever pack hunters. killing is what they do. the trainers were working with a wild animal. as in wild. after killing its trainers (what`s the last count? three?) then it should be put down, humanely. but stoning? it`s cruel, and an excuse for revenge against an animal that doesn`t realize it`s done something wrong.
