I don`t get why people made such a big deal out of this animal doing what it`s instincts tell it to do. when you are working with wild animals, you know the risks involved. it was probably the trainers fault.

I agree the whale isn`t at fault and sea world has decided to keep the whale. Unlike a lot of places that end up putting down a wild animal for doing what they naturally do. I will mention this whale has done this before. I honestly wouldn`t work with that whale, I am so glad she/he is being kept though.

    Wikipedia sez:
Orcas are powerful predators capable of dispatching prey much larger than humans, such as leopard seals and great white sharks. They have also been recorded preying on usually terrestrial species such as moose swimming between islands.

Obviously, we are MORE than small enough to be seen as food.

You know I put the jackasses at Sea World right up there with the Ringling brothers and the various idiots that try to make bears balance on balls and wear clown hats. They *deserve* to be killed and eaten.

Animals do NOT exist for our pleasure or by our leave. They have an equal right to exist and there`s no reason for us to hold them in captivity for no other purpose than our amusement.

Considering that an Orca`s natural habitat is the friggin` OCEAN keeping them in any kind of enclosure just seems fundamentally cruel.

That being said, I have no issue with hunting and eating the animals of the world, but they should be able to live free as long as they`re capable and not penned in cages.

Anyways, I don`t feel bad for the people who died. Especially not the idiot who decided to swim with the whale after hours. Deserved it.
What do you expect to happen when you put a 6 ton wild animal in an itty bitty tank and force him/her to do tricks? Certainly not sit there and have a tea party with you.

Zoos, circuses, sea world, whatever. Horrible places.

Dainty and Silverthread. You dumbasses amaze me. While I agree with the idea that keeping these animals in tanks is wrong, the trainers as well as any other animal expert DO NOT DESERVE TO DIE! These trainers believe in the idea of studying the animals for our knowledge and most of them really care about the animals. Displaying them for the amusment of humans, while inherently wrong, is not the only reason we have zoos and aquariums like these. There are many benifits to learning about these animals close up. Places like these, for the most part, take great care to make sure these animals are not harmed or abused. Sea World is well known for their good treatment of the animals as well as their efforts to teach the public about them and their habbits. They don`t deserve to die for it any more than a gun store clerk deserves to die for selling guns. Idiots.

"There are many benifits to learning about these animals close up."

You can`t really learn about the animals and their actions/habits when they aren`t in their natural habitat. And, unfortunately for many animals, their natural habitats are destroyed and taken over by buildings and humans.

None of the animals should be caged in the first place. They should be in their natural habitats, and not for human entertainment, That`s all they are seen as. Entertainment. I understand what you`re saying, but I disagree. And there is no way you could tell me that circuses do ANYTHING good.
And yeah, sure, it`s unfortunate for the trainer`s death, but that is a possible action for working with these animals, which they have to accept when they begin their job. So I don`t feel sorry for her, since she, and everyone else, knew that could happen.

Dainty: Anyways, I don`t feel bad for the people who died.

Come on the f*ck guys, are you for serious? They deserved it? On one side we have people who are dads, mums, sons, daughters, who are now dead. On the other side we`ve got a f*cking bigass dolphin.

Dainty, to pick up on your point on zoos, seaworld etc (circuses are an exception, definitely agree there).

These places are raising awareness, on a massive scale. I have a 3-year old daughter, as she is totally and innocently in love with all things to do with the natural world. Most of her little world has come from our regular visit to zoos and so on (we`re proud annual pass holders, and donators to the zoo trust).

Soon these animals are going to be extinct in the wild. Zoos (at least, at their best) are about education, not entertainment. With proper management, we can raise a whole new generation who look after their co-habited environment with other animals.

From what I`ve seen, zoos are great places to educate kids about what we as humans are doing to our planet.

And don`t get me wrong, I`m as left-wing hippie as they come. But let`s try to keep perspective on the Big Picture here. Jeebus.

They deserved it? I`m pretty sure they ended up in that job through a degree in marine biology, which they prolly ended up in through a love of animals, big and small. Rail against the profiteers if you must, but animal trainers ain`t profiteers, they have a very different driver.

Animosity is fine and healthy, but I think there`s some misdirected animosity here.

O.K., Davymid...I agree that zoos and aquariums are great for raising awareness. Whos to say that they might not inspire some kids to become marine biologists and work towards helping endangered animals, etc.., but lets not kid our selves about Sea World. They are a theme park whose highest priority is making a profit. They train their animals to do stupid tricks for entertainment.

Might be weird, but I was researching dolphins last night after coming across a series of stories where dolphins saved people from sharks by forming a protective circle around the intended victums until the shark went away.
They`re considering calling dolphins (yes, killer whales are considered dolphins) non-human persons. They`re considering giving dolphins rights. And this is not PETA talk--these are scientists who investigated dolphin intelligence and not only discovered that dolphins are nearly twice as intelligent as the average primate, but are closer to us in intelligence than previously thought.
This means eating dolphins would be considered illegal and murdering dolphins would be akin to murder. And sea world would have to go out of business (lol).

    Just thought this was interesting.
