Wow I JUST came across this a week or two ago when I was researching trig. (I was drunk so I don`t remember exactly WHY or HOW I got there). I thought for sure the only reason he solved it was for the millinium prize. Guess not. I understand his reasoning but still..

He looks down, has trouble with peers, has an extreme love for math (i.e. ordering and rules), and feels very uncomfortable with change (i.e. living at home), as well as having no regard for personal appearance/hygiene. Does this sound like Asperger`s Syndrome or other form of Autism? That would explain the lack of attachment to the prize money as well....

He was proving a point by not accepting the money. He had a problem with the ethical standards within the field of mathematics... basically he thought some of the other mathematicians were dishonest etc...

After turning down $1 million I think this mans status as a "genius" should be revoked.

What a jerk. Take the money and give it to a good charity or a few worthy families. Don`t just refuse it because you are happy with your POS home.

lol @ repression`s post.

You know, there`s a fine line between genius and insanity.
Or perhaps he`s just shroomin his brains out.

WOW, I`m impressed. He apparently knows money can`t buy happiness.. I`m not so sure though, but I`m not a genius!

That is something to consider. Imagine having an IQ so high that everyone you came in contact with throughout life was an utter moron by comparison.

My take on it`s always been "The fine line between Genius and Insanity is Success."

So where would this guy fall?

And a perfect Four, I-A-B - way to go. I plan on exploring this enigma further.

He seems okay- it`s just us who have a problem with his lifestyle choices. Having said THAT, he does seem to have some issues- I hope his mother can cope, and that he will be cared for if she dies before him.

You`re only saying that cause the Voices are telling you to hop the green Indian on the red waterfall.

"well insanity and genius are truly a shade off from each other."

Sometimes I believe that crazy people might actually be the only sane ones alive in this world, and we`re all trapped within social standards that don`t make sense to begin with because we don`t bother questioning it.

There`s only so much malleability in a human brain. Once you devote so much space to a certain subject (i.e. math) you start losing stuff elsewhere (like social graces). Einstein could never learn to drive.

Typical genius behavior. My opinion is `drat em`... if he refuses to contribute to society then let`s move right on without him. I would love a gift that he has, too bad he wastes it with his lifestyle.

My theory:
He hates the Russian government, and knows that if he receives the money, the Feds will tax it into nothing, leaving him with nothing, and giving those non-nice individuals a million bucks.

Or he`s just crazy

Man, this dude is smart. He understands Topology: something I am currently struggling with. I looked this Poincare conjecture up on Wikipedia, and it`s giving me a headache just trying to understand it. But to be honest, he`s a mathematician. Mathematicians don`t need money. It`s not important to them. What is important is proving things are correct. [Seriously, you should see my lecturers]

Lazy: It doesn`t matter if it`s not about the money to HIM.
I thought that "if you don`t want it, accept it and donate it" suggestion was pretty good.
There are people to whom the money IS important, like impoverished families and starving African children.

I`ve heard of him before. He solved one of the great problems of math, and he refused the money because it was an insult

Its not about the money to him, a lot of you don`t understand that.

Wow...
He could have such a much better life with 1 million, he technically wouldn`t have to work with the amount of interest based off that amount (I believe it`s close to an actual salary figure) - but I suppose he`s got his own reasons why he shouldn`t - and `m pleased that he isn`t letting others talk him into taking it.
