In Acts (new Testament) God sends down a flock of sparrows to peck a man and woman`s eyes out for only pledging half of the man`s estate to the church.

But i agree that the New Testament is a far cry from the old, far less smiting.

The God of the Bible has a lot to answer for before he He deserves our praise and worship.

If I were to find out he really existed after I die, I would ask God a simple question, "Who died for God`s sins?"

    Romans 4:25-5:2
He was delivered over to death for our sins and then was raised to life to put us right with God. By faith in this, then, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand.
"Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?" he replied, "`You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind` - this is the great and foremost commandment, and there is a second like it, `You shall love your neighbour as yourself`. The whole Law and Prophets hang on these two commands." (Mtt 22:37-40, Mrk 12:28-34).

I never realized serving others and the person who gave me these ideals were the epitome of sin.

"He will not enter this city
    or shoot an arrow here.
He will not come before it with shield
or build a siege ramp against it.

    34 By the way that he came he will return;

35 "I will defend this city and save it,
for my sake and for the sake of David my servant!"

36 Then the angel of the LORD went out and put to death a hundred and eighty-five thousand men in the Assyrian camp. When the people got up the next morning—there were all the dead bodies! 37 So Sennacherib king of Assyria broke camp and withdrew. He returned to Nineveh and stayed there.

There is just one of the passages he mentions towards the end of the video. He says "What about the night when he slays 185,000 people? What he should have said is, What about the night when he

there`s three viewpoints in this world.first, somesay that all human experience is based on destiny, next, some hold that everything is created by god and controlled by his will, and third, some say that every thing happens by chance without having any cause or condition.--if all has been decided by destiny, both good and evil deeds are predetermined, happiness and sorrow are predestined; nothing would exist that has not been fore-ordained.then all human plans and efforts for progress and improvement would be in vain, and humanity would be without hope. the same is true for the other viewpoints, for if everything in the last resort is in the hands of an un-knowable god, or of blind chance, what hope has humanity except in submission? it is no wonder people holding these conceptions lose hope and neglect efforts to act wisely and avoid evil.--in fact, those three conceptions are all wrong: everything is a succesion of appearences whose source is the accumulation of causes and conditions

lol, Skreshavik, what epic fail. Jesus wasn`t put to death *because* he loved everyone. The point of Jesus is he lived a sinless life, and still was put to death, thereby paying the debt of all other sinners on earth, which is what the first passage you quoted says. The second passage shows WHY Jesus lived a sinless life.

Being a good person is what we all try to be. We don`t need the Bible to tell us what is right and wrong, we already know it. There are no commandments against injuring, abusing, enslaving, oppressing, insulting, tormenting, or torturing people, and yet we know these are wrong. Christians, Muslims, and Jews all have a history of doing all those evil things in the name of God.

If you truly want the world to be what you think Jesus would want, then history shows that you wont find it in the Bible.

Sorry for multiple posts in advance:

"Come out and say that the old testament laws were absolutely hideous"

OK, as a Christian, I`m prepared to admit that. But one of the cries the "stereotypical Christian" yells out is "That`s from a different time and a different culture" and (you`re going to hate me for saying this) I stand by that argument for many of them. All the `bad` verses came from the Old Testament while most of the `good` verses come from Jesus and the New Testament, and the New Testament is what separates Christianity from Judaism. As Evanking said, "bitches dont know about my new covenant."

I know that answer won`t satisfy any of you and I`m not saying that accounts for all the passages. There`s stuff in there I won’t try to account for, and don`t even understand myself. But you’ve got to remember that it`s all based on FAITH, that’s the ‘buzzword’ of religion.

We may not understand all of it, we don`t have any evidence for any of it, and I`m not going to try to pretend we do, but even if you came out with the most amazing evidence or argument to suggest God doesn`t exist, it probably still wouldn`t change our minds, because the whole idea is based on faith.

You can call us idiots for that and IAB can continue its stream of poking fun and bullying religious people, but none of it makes me doubt my beliefs. In fact, since IAB seems to love shoving atheism down my throat every day and since most of you IAB hardline atheists seem to be completely apathetic bastards about the whole thing, it actually has the opposite effect on me.

Here`s a quote I found from an English author; “Absolute atheism and absolute theism dance to the same tune, each driving the other to further and further streams of absolute conviction”.

...I couldn`t agree more. In my books, all of you screaming at me for believing in a "fairy-tale sky wizard" are no better than religious fundamentalists walking around with "God Hates Fags" signs.

I`m a very Liberal Christian, so you won`t find me searching the internet for ammunition I can shove down your throats, unlike you guys, who seem to put a lot of effort into it, when really we could just be humane and stop trying to slit each other’s throats.

For the record, I don`t wish the fiery pits of hell or ‘God`s smiting’ upon any of you and I hope, IF Christianity turns out to be right in the end, that it’s all a metaphor for something less extreme. There`s plenty of debate in the Christian world over what exactly heaven and hell are, and to me a place of eternal torture and damnation doesn`t really fit the persona of a forgiving God, but I digress.

So there you go. *Hits Eject*

Also, just because a whole lot of people do/did evil "in the name of God" doesn`t mean Jesus Christ would have thought it was a great idea. The Bible clearly states otherwise. Christians who hate ANYONE are not very Christ-like at all, because Christ turned away no one.

@pui, we can sit here all day countering each other with Bible passages, but it doesn`t change the fact that as a whole, Christians have not acted very Christ-like. On an individual level most Christians do try to live a good life.

My challenge to you is to show that they are good people because of the Bible and not that they read the Bible because they are good people.

I think you believe you need to be a Christian to be good, but that belief is grossly mistaken.

lol where did I say I believe you need to be Christian to be good? Don`t put words in my mouth.

I think many atheists have this twisted view of Christians. There are millions of Christians in the world, and most of them live peaceful quiet lives where they don`t bother anyone. Then, there are a select few Christians who are hell-raisers and hateful people who continually try and bombard people with their opinion. I think most Atheists only notice the smaller group (Probably because they`re louder and screaming "LOOK AT ME"), but that in no way reflects on the majority of christian people.

@pui, you countered (with Bible passages) my post about not needing to be Christian to be good. I responded to you and I stayed on topic. Now you accuse me of putting words in your mouth? No, you did not say it directly, you implied it by countering me on that topic. Also notice I said, "I think you believe".

I also find it funny that you rail against Atheists for misunderstanding Christians, and in doing so you make the same mistake about Atheists.

You want to debate someone who has "actually done some research into the subject", but I doubt they want to debate someone who gets so defensive and irrational, and who`s main argument is to point to Bible passages that support their position.

@pui, I said there are no -->commandments<-- against that list of evil acts. You sent me Bible passages that says love your neighbor and that that is a commandment. I can easily exceed the 1,000 character limit with Bible passages that shows the opposite. Christians can`t make the Old Testament go away, and they can`t defend it. Your God, according to the Bible, has either directly broken, or ordered His followers to break just about every commandment. I think your God deserves an eternity in Hell, not praise and worship.

A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. I do not permit a woman to teach or have authority over a man; she must be silent. For Adam was formed first, then Eve. And Adam was not the one deceived, it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner.

ok let`s make this simple...you cannot use the old testment. when Jesus was on earth he brought a NEW message and it null/voided and made moot the old testment. BUT non-religious types either don;t know that or ignore it.

I am not real religious but i know the old testment was the way it was but no longer.

That`s not true Jamie. he did not abolish, he fulfilled..

    Matthew 5:17 says,

17"Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. 19Anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

"A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. I do not permit a woman to teach or have authority over a man; she must be silent. For Adam was formed first, then Eve. And Adam was not the one deceived, it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner."

I`m seriously not even speaking on my own behalf, I saw someone else comment on this in another religious post, but since he says "I" is he not technically saying he himself, and not God?

I seriously think we should just leave each other alone. I`ve had too many things happen to me for me not to believe in a God, and others think differently.

    * Jesus taught that "the proper way to keep any commandment was to fulfill the purpose for which it was given." For instance, Jesus taught that the Sabbath was instituted for the sake of people (Mk 2:27), and therefore picking food to eat or healing on the Sabbath was perfectly allowable. (Mk 2:23-3:5).

    * Jesus` teachings on the Law also focused on inward obedience, or obedience of the heart, rather than outward, legalistic obedience (Mt 5:21-28). Furthermore, Matthew 15:17-20 contains the same teaching that in Mark is explicitly interpreted as saying that all foods are clean (Mk 7:14-23).

    * "The law is fulfilled ethically rather than ceremonially," which Jesus emphasizes by quoting Hosea 6:6: "I desire mercy, not sacrifice" (Mt 9:13, 12:7).

Jesus` fulfillment of the Law applies particularly to the sacrificial system. The requirement of sacrifice in order for sins to be forgiven is still in effect, but the requirement has been fulfilled by Jesus` dea

Since the sacrifices described in the Law no longer have to be carried out, people might think that the Law itself has been abolished (e.g. sacrifice was once required for forgiveness, but is no longer a requirement), but Jesus explains that he is meeting the requirement, not removing it. Or rather, the need for us today to meet the sacrificial and ceremonial obligations of the Law is abolished, but not the need for those obligations to have been fulfilled in Jesus.

As far as a woman not teaching teaching there has been evidence that it was added later. In the earliest copies we have of Paul`s letters, over half of the leaders of the church he thanked name`s were in the female form, and in some of the older copies, they were in the male form.

You wives will submit to your husbands as you do to the Lord. For a husband is the head of his wife as Christ is the head of his body, the church; he gave his life to be her Savior. As the church submits to Christ, so you wives must submit to your husbands in everything.

The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband. 4The wife`s body does not belong to her alone but also to her husband. In the same way, the husband`s body does not belong to him alone but also to his wife.

*SIGH* Good Lord (pun intended), these anti-Christian posts are popping up left and right now. I sincerely hope IAB realizes there are MANY more religious "nutjobs" out there then "open-minded" atheists. I`m not saying cater to one type over the other. I`m simply saying you are pissing off a rather large chunk of your audience so that you can feel smug about yourself (all wrapped up in your own logical fallacies). What I really don`t get is why it`s so "open minded" of these same atheists to sit there and try to tear apart someone else`s belief structure only to cry foul and "close minded" on those who in turn defend those very same belief structures. How very hypocritical of you. Thanks.

Seriously man, you have 2000 posts in IAB. You`re a pathetic douchebag with very little life. Why must you peddle your beliefs here. If you really care then take them to the streets and make a difference. Stop hiding behind a computer screen and go defend your opinions against people who know how to defend theirs. Not reading what people write to you and reject and "hate" it is stupid and shows how incorrect you are in your approach. Learn humility.

That exchange between Batmanners and DJDoubleb was funny. Batmanners claimed DJDoubleb was close minded because DJDoubleb said this:
"Yes I enjoy religious discussions with others who have different beliefs."

Batmanners went on to post these quotes:
"I hope you never have kids."
    "I know what I believe"
"I dunno, I didn`t bother to read what you wrote"
"I assumed you had a "pro Jesus" approach to it. Which instantly made me hate your opinion."
"The best belief is a belief kept to yourself."
"Don`t bother replying, I`m not following this conversation any further due to lack of interest."

It seems Batmanners has no earthly clue what the definition of "close minded" means. Even worse, he has no idea that he is the close minded one..

@mandingo3519, no, your bullet point list are not all facts. It is a common misconception, and seems very hard for some Christians to wrap their head around, but Atheist do not have faith. Just as the maker of this video, and someone else further down in the comments said, saying that Atheists have faith is like saying that NOT collecting stamps is a hobby.

Another problem with the term Atheist is that most Atheists aren`t true Atheists, but do not fit any title and settle for being called an Atheist. For example, I have no idea if there is or isn`t a God. Others are Agnostic, which gets lumped in with Atheism, but shouldn`t. Others are non-theist, they just don`t play the game.

Also, don`t confuse people who don`t believe in God with those who think all religions are bullpoo. It takes a whack job to claim he knows if God exists or not. It takes common sense to know the Bible is a crock.

its common because its funny to laugh at people that refuse to see logic, especially when its so blatant. i have nothing against christianity or any other religion or the people that practice them, but its still funny to see someone ignore or deny parts of their religious text because it makes their religion or god or practices seem like something that isnt completely pure and good.
    ---------
god is or was vengeful, you have to believe that if you believe in what the bible says in a literal sense. accept it and get on with your life.
also, the bible was written a long ass time ago so many of its messages/morals/etc will be outdated and seem cruel nowadays. accept it and get on with your life.

If some of it was not appropriate and shouldn`t be taken literally, then why accept any of it? That`s the point moderate Christians seem to miss. If you know which moral codes to accept and which ones to reject, then obviously your morality is independent from your religion. Why not cut out the middleman and know what`s right and wrong without the need for religion?

I didn`t see this as christian bashing, It seems like it`s making a point about how "context" is complex and that the bible really isn`t all love and joy, as so many people argue it is. That`s all. This video doesn`t deny existence of god, it interrogates a supposed holy text.

Just because you personally don`t take it literally just means this video isn`t aimed at you. It`s aimed at the issue between people who believe it`s 100% true and those who don`t.

I have a feeling most of the rants claiming Christian bashing didn`t even hit play.

It`s not Christian bashing, it`s mindless bible thumper bashing.

There are intelligent Christians and the ones who only hear what they want and regurgitate what other people said is in the bible and don`t read it themselves. There are passages that are not nice! There are the vengeful God passages and the loving one. It isn`t slander against God. The Christian God isn`t always a fluffy bunny of fuzzy love.

I always thought it was funny that Christians even quote Leviticus, seeing as both Hebrews 7 and Acts 15 mention that Jesus had fulfilled Mosaic law and therefore Christians no longer need to follow them.

But man oh man, is it EVER good to just pick up that ONE chapter and quote from it to justify bigotry of sexual orientations and other religions.

@mandingo3519, yes I`ve felt the love of my parents and have given love to my kids. I have felt the sun on my face and felt its warmth. I have not ever once attributed it to a higher power of any sort. It is possible these things are the result of a higher power, be it god or a kid with an XBox 2150. I see nothing in any of those experiences that could ONLY be a result of a higher power. The ancients would look at lightning and attribute it to the Gods because they couldn`t know better. Just because love seems inexplicable, does not mean it is the domain of something greater.

There`s been a serious lack of interesting new stuff on the internet lately. It`s been unusually boring. They`re probably scraping the bottom of the barrel just to have something to put on here.

After I watched this I had to run off to drop off some applications, but on the way there a thought hit me.

In all these years of war and suffering, why hasn`t anyone re-written the bible to include only love, acceptance and friendly views of equality and understanding?

Correct me if I`m wrong but I`m certain that the last person to re-write the bible was King James, hence the "King James Version" that everyone swears by.

If there`s so many bad passages that no one follows or needs to follow anymore because they don`t apply to modern day society (stoning, sacrifices, kidnapping from other nations for slaves) then why don`t you sit down and update the damn thing?

If a human like King James did it, why can`t a human like me or you do it?

Hell, I`ll do it, I`ll make sure it`s fair and just, give me the gist of it and I`ll write a new bible for everyone, if only so you can quite bickering already over who has it right or not and be happy with it.

I should add that it won`t be a change per se, the person(s) with influence will say they`ve interpreted the bible correctly, thereby making all others incorrect. The schism created helps the whole from coming together to discuss and realize something must be off, if you go from one god to myriad ways of appeasing him. That`s where the control comes in and the rest, is history...

well, every publisher has a different bible, sort of. The wording is different and maybe a passage is left out.
There is actually a group that is rewriting the bible, but certainly not for love and peace. this new bible is being written by a bunch of arc conservatives who are trying to create a bible that adequately reflects what god(they) want in society.

To give you an idea of how backwards they people are, the leaders mother, phylish shlaffly, wrote a book called mien kampf (in homage to hitler) about how women and every other minority are to dumb to live.

After 3 years of I-A-B, a comment a day seems nice and easy...

"Why must you peddle your beliefs here."
To quote myself : "The best belief is a belief kept to yourself."

"Even worse, he has no idea that he is the close minded one.."
It`s "closed minded", my typo, your fault. (joking)

"batmanners i agree with you. beating off a dead horse"

    WTF???

To clear everything up, I only made ignorant comments to troll a flame war, and it worked. I do think arguing religion is a complete waste of time though. The first step towards world peace will be for everyone to pick a religion, interpret it in their own way, and keep it to themselves. Religion is a good thing to have if it`s what you need to tell you what`s right and wrong, not everyone needs to be told that stuff.

I`ve noticed that in a lot of religious arguments, people get really at people who are "closed minded" and begin yelling at them saying to let people have their opinions... and therefore condemn their opinion.

Then I will correct you. The KJV dates from 1611; there have been 73 new versions at least since then. The reason why no-one has `re-written` it is because every new translation must pass rigorous proofreading to ensure that there are no mistakes in meaning or intent; that the translation sticks, as closely as possible, to the original meaning.

This has been the case since Charles 1st decreed it, following publication in 1631 of what came to be known as the Wicked Bible - the royal printers left out the word `not` in the 10 Commandments so it read "Thou shall commit adultery." Since then, every version must be approved by an international committee.

What most non-readers of the bible fail to understand is the difference between the old testament and the new testament. A lot of the "old" ways of thinking, including someone being stoned to death for one reason or another is no longer valid since Christ`s death. It is easy to have an opinion about something you know nothing about or understand. It`s the equivalent to someone being racist or a bigot, pure ignorance.

    Ladies and Gentlemen.

Here is a chick tract. For those of you in the know, you`ll know that JTC is a spiteful, hateful ignoramus, who couldn`t string two words together for a serious debate.

Notice how in the comic he drew we have:
A stereotyped Atheist, who loses to the religious kid.

What have we learned from this? That Cartoons are easy to argue against when you get to be both voices, painting your opponent any way you choose.

Feel free to ignore any parallels.

(P.S. Most of those "good" verses have had their contexts explained to me by Christians, even when it wasn`t necessarily in a favorable light. My favourite being "Turn the other cheek". Context is always important, not just selectively.

If you`re suggesting people are more likely to complain about the negative, might I advise a psychology 101 class).

well not that this argument will ever end but the original Christians were called Judeo-Christians which were simply Jews who believed the savior had come WITH NO OTHER DISTINCTIONS to say the old testament has no baring on Christianity is arrogant. About mistranslations, these allegations are always controversial and people have claimed all kinds of things are mistranslated even that cain and abel were lesbian babys of eve and lilith so there

Sorry also: "It`s not bashing Christians, it`s bashing bible thumpers".

From the subtitle: "The quotes that don`t serve Christians, that is..."

    "I hate Blacks"
    "Hey that`s racist"
"Oh, I only meant the <insert negative stereotype here> ones"

Notice he didn`t say "Gangbangers/Gangstas/Etc" he said black people. Black people might get upset about it. Again, psychology 101 would tell you why.

I`ve started using "Antitheists" instead of "Atheists" for example when talking about what I specifically dislike, which has little to do with Atheism.

Otherwise I wouldn`t have married an Atheist, hung out on Atheist forums, have an Atheist as my best friend, etc.

Yet people on this site got upset when I used "Atheists". They`re right to.

It`s true, but it`s not much use because it`s rational and thus irrelevant to religion. All Abrahamic theists have a choice between being a brutal, murderous nutjob and selectively ignoring much of the content of their own religion.

Doubtless the same is true for other religions too, but I don`t know enough about them to be sure of which ones.

So...you think this video applies to Jews but not Christians?

How do you, personally, dismiss the passages in the NT about how the OT still applies? In particular, the direct quote from Jesus that every one of the old laws applies entirely until the end of the world? Matthew 5:18-19.

Or are you just ignorant of those things? You know what that would mean, according to you.

The Old Testament lays the foundation for the teachings and events found in the New Testament, and was meant to prepare the Israelites for, the coming of the Messiah who would sacrifice Himself for the sins of the whole world (1 John 2:2). The New Testament shares the life of Jesus Christ and then looks back on what He did and how we are to respond to His gift of eternal life and live our lives in gratitude for all He has done for us (Romans 12). Both testaments reveal the same holy, merciful, and righteous God who must condemn sin but who desires to bring to Himself a fallen human race of sinners through the forgiveness only possible through Christ`s atoning sacrifice. In both testaments, God reveals Himself to us and how we are to come to Him through Jesus Christ. In both testaments, we find all we need for eternal life and godly living (2 Timothy 3:15-17).
