We know we should blame the parents, but this kid deserves some blame. How do you even deal with teens like this?

You`ve really lost this argument if you`re worried about me not quoting one of your full stops! <----- (that`s just for you)

Let`s both just quit while we`re ahead, you and I disagree, we`ve both been a bit twatish, now let`s both either live in knowing that the other is wrong or live in ignorance.

And don`t say if you want an argument to stop then stop posting, because we both have to agree to stop.

Never said that I studied Newton`s works, although I have studied some. Relative to their era of study Newton may have been greater than Hawkings but today, he would know most if not all of Newton`s theories! Observations have shown Newton`s theory of gravity breakdown at both space/galaxies and sub-atomic levels.

And most of the crap coming from you is coming off as dumb! Besides you state nonsense, for example you said such and such then accuse me of doing what you`re doing. When I prove you wrong, we hear nothing from you about that!

Soooo you study Newton`s work now do you know more than him? Hawkins is talented don`t get me wrong but, the things he did for math and physics are no where in comparison. Quantum Physics is very heavily theorized.

Called him Newton, because we were discussing gravity. Tesla wasn`t in the conversation so introduced him by whole name had we been discussing magnetic fields I`d probably call him Tesla I`m sorry that wow`ed you so much.

Yes it came off dumb, does saying something that sounds dumb make you dumb? If that`s how you feel about yourself. *shrugs*

Never said that either, but you said:

Someone who studies what Newton studied will have read his works and therefore understands what Newton knew. Then given current knowledge has advanced on it:

"It`s really obvious that 300 years later we will have a better understanding of studied theories, if it wasn`t the case then we would have just been studying it for the past 300 years and not getting anywhere!"

That`s got logic written all over it!

Your teacher calls you by first name, or both, because you are on first name terms. Most people call Tesla, Tesla, exactly the same reason you didn`t call Newton Issac.

"sound even dumber" so you were indirectly calling me dumb.

Fail for you!

"Newton knows more than Hawkins" I`m not Newton I don`t know more than either of the two and never claimed to know more than them.

Claimed the notion that someone studies a subject today therefore they must be greater than someone who studied it in the past. Ridiculous not you

And that is a Fail so according to you my teacher calls my whole name while taking attendance we`re best buddies.

Never called you dumber either you even fail at copying and pasting if your going to cite someone at least do it correctly.

Agreed next thread.

But you`re still wrong, gravity is a theory at the moment and no Tesla didn`t make things that we can`t replicate today!

Lastly you made no sense in your last post I get the feeling you`re just posting like a special needs kid in a room full of balloons and sweets!

The reason I said that is because you tried and failed to make yourself look more intelligent by stating Tesla`s first name, even though the majority of the world just calls him Tesla.

As I said before come back to me when you`ve either got some resources to quote or you`ve at least read a book.

You fail!

Firstly, you apply it you do not derive it. The derivation is ultimately more tricky my fiancee is a mathematician and she can practically explain everything that I have learned. Secondly, I don`t know why I`am having this argument because even though my background is in maths/physics, which is what you said I needed to qualify for this conversation, my role as an acoustician is engineering based - solving problems using theory. And your point destroyed once again, engineers modelled MST to assess if it was able to dampen earthquakes in large high rise buildings - turned out it didn`t and the vibration of circular plates is used quite a bit in engineering but you have to understand the derivation to know its limits of use!

Lastly, I know Tesla was his last name you dingbat! You called him Nicola Tesla!
0
Reply
Male 771
Joey if Engineers have to learn math to apply it wouldn`t that make an engineer smarter because that would make us mathematicians with an additional capability of applying the mathematicians to engineering...

And my point once again don`t know how to model scatter plots or vibration of a circular plate do know how to model a circuit and DO something useful with it, also know how to model software and DO something with it.

Also, Tesla is his last name not his first.

And BTW considering you know so much about Tesla you`re on first name terms... you will know that the patents that he filed and we can never replicate are purely fictional ideas! He never replicated them either. It`s REALLY obvious that any information people have learned in our known history will have been passed down for us to learn! You really are SO SO SO stupid! I can`t get over how stupid you really are!

Male 174
Erm, kinda obvious mathematicians are much smarter than engineers... engineers have to learn maths to apply it!

My field is probably far more complex than you give credit for... when`s the last time you modelled multiple scattering theory? Or the vibration of a circular plate? You probably couldn`t even begin to understand the maths!
What`s the difference between a mathematician and an engineer? An engineer could never explain why it happens! And computer engineering is such a crap subject, it`s really not that difficult, even though you`re probably gonna graduate with a third!

Lastly, Tesla? Yes people can replicate dippoo!

Gravity is a theory, I`ve already cited well respected books but even then you think you know more than Steven Hawking... must be the bachelors in computer engineering! You`re a moron you know nothing and that`s the way it will always be. You state facts and haven`t referenced to anything so what do you know? Bugger all!

"i am a Christian
and i dont support gay marriage "

Sorry, but these two statements are self-contradicting.

Jesus requires that his followers treat others exactly as they wish to be treated, so, any heterosexual who is married, or wants to get married, but opposed same-sex marriage, has explicitly rejected Jesus Christ.

Creating a second-class `same as but different` is only good enough if you would settle for it yourself.

If you treat anyone, even GLBTQ people, differently than you want to be treated, you are not yet a Christian.

It`s the principle of the fact that this wannabe church group (which has no real church)is brainwashing children to believe this country is all going to hell because we all break every rule the bible set forth. Saying that soldiers who fight for the US deserve to die and were struck down by God himself, or that gays eat feces, "fags" are anyone that does more than just regular ordinary missionary style sex on their marriage bed, etc. They spew propaganda and assault people who fight every day for the rights that they abuse every moment they can.

Fine, you obviously couldn`t accept to agree to disagree....

My background is Physics/Maths, I`m about to finish a degree in Acoustics (for you that`s physics and maths - not music!). Aiming for a first with Hons.

It`s really obvious that 300 years later we will have a better understanding of studied theories, if it wasn`t the case then we would have just been studying it for the past 300 years and not getting anywhere!

It`s also really quite obvious that you are an uneducated fool who hasn`t picked up a book since `spot the dog`. Especially as you really have no clue what you`re going on about.

"Gravity is a law, but we understand and explain it through a theory. It is both ; )"

My point was that the theory of gravity is undefined, as we define gravity at the moment it is unproven! Therefore gravity is a collaboration of theories that have yet to be proven. If you don`t beleive me then again I suggest you read a book!

@ Taylor stone I agree with that brainwashing your kids into hating people is wrong. There was an episode of that family swap shop with a extreme religious family swapping mom`s with an extremely atheist family and it shows the effects. The atheist kids went bat poo insane when they were asked to read the bible like their eyes would melt and the religious kids cried when the atheist mom took down the religious item in the home. Both sets of kids acted abnormally IMO i think parents should let their own kids decide and not force feed them.

Well, "Gravitational Theory" is our explanation of the phenomenon we know as `gravity`.

It is a law of gravity that if you drop an object here, it will fall to the ground, but it is Gravitational Theory that explains how and why this occurs.

Gravity is a law, but we understand and explain it through a theory. It is both ; )

Let`s leave it at that and I don`t know your field of study but I`m seriously doubting it physics or anything down in applied math/ or science if you seriously think just because someone is doing it now is better than the inventor of it. He invented a math to allow not geniuses to apply mathematics to engineering how many of those did hawkins write?, and if you really want an argument to end the easiest way is to stop arguing.

It`s pointless deviating from this subject any further, especially when you beleive that someone (all be it an extremely intelligent someone) from the 17/18th century can have a greater knowledge of a studied subject than someone from this century.

So let`s just agree to disagree, it`s been a fun argument.

But back to subject, yeh these people (in the photo) are tossers!

First Newton > Hawking first of all
2nd of all while there are theories on the effects of gravity or the cause. doesn`t mean that gravity is a theory.

Eg. Someone can die of a heart attack there may be theories on what causes the heart attack doesn`t mean that heart attacks causing death is a theory.

Unfortunately there`s no book than can further explain that.

Well lets see, mass creates gravity, and since planetary masses are not uniform, so neither will their gravitational fields. Also the planets are not perfect spheres, actual their not spheres, round yes, sphere no. since earth for an explain in flat on top and bottom due to the high speed rotation of our planet.

And WBC is NOT Christian... They have no ordained church affiliation, yet call themselves a church. The fact that they even have a FALSE church affiliation makes the government unwilling to step in and stop them for fear of uprising from various churches about religious rights. All it would take is he government saying they don`t honor the WBC as a legitimate faith. Without the church protection, they can be brought to answer for what they do and they can be stopped from gathering in large rallies or at funerals of soldiers. The downfall would be the massive court cases that would stem from it, and the huge attack on the government for persecuting a "church" for their views.

Perhaps the issue isn`t one of religion or homosexuality. I think it`s parenting...
The parents of this little girl are idiots in my opinion.
How old is she?? Nine? She hasn`t had the time nor likely the education that would let her come up with her own, lucid position on, well, ANY subject - let alone one as explosive as homosexual rights or lack-thereof.
Her parents have done her a huge disservice; they`ve used their child to push their own agenda - right, wrong or otherwise.

I would defend to the death their right to express their opinions. But I can`t get past the horrible parenting skills on display.

Hiding behind your pre-teen to push your political views?!? Puh-leeze...

When I`m Emperor I`ll make people take parenting tests before they`re allowed to procreate...

The fact is we know that gravity exists. We call it a force - but we don`t know how it works. Gravity itself is the weakest force in nature. Astrophysicists follow the Einstein way of thinking that it is space and time bending under a mass, Quantum physicists way of thinking is that it is actually a partical called a graviton. Both are valid theories, neither are fact.

If you ever get the chance I strongly suggest you watch "What on Earth is wrong with gravity" a documentary by Dr (now Prof.) Cox, the brother of one of the lecturers at my Uni and also a scienctist who worked on the LHC.

Joey, theories in science are never proven. They can be tested so many times people come to accept them as fact. Newton`s theory wasn`t necessarily wrong, it just did not explain everything. That`s one area christians are always getting confused, thinking that the theory of evolution has not been proven yet. A theory only becomes a law when there are no data offered to refute the theory and it has been tested to exhaustion. Accepting a theory as fact does not allow for new developments to that theory, as einstein did with newton`s theory of gravity.

Ya know, these God`s right/Science`s right posts are redundant. I`m Christian but I am not so naive to disregard science. My view, if I make it to Heaven, I`ll have some questions to be asking. And if Heaven doesn`t exist, well trying to live by a set of morals ain`t such a bad idea.

Yes, our scientific understanding changes. The ideas we hold as true will in 100 years` time be superceded by better and more refined knowledge. But that`s a good thing. That`s what`s supposed to happen. Science is good at changing and updating our canon of knowledge as the facts demand it. That`s why our scientific knowledge has increased exponentially, while religions... look pretty much the same as they did hundreds of years ago. Because religions are based on beliefs instead of facts, they`re not very good at updating when new facts come in. It takes a long time for religions to change, and there`s usually a lot of resistance. To some, this looks like constancy in a world of change, but it`s actually a drag on human knowledge.

@joey7415963: I get what you`re saying and I do accept people`s beliefs. In "real" life, most people do not know I am an Athiest unless we start discussing religion and they ask me outright. I don`t throw my beliefs down people`s throats. But christians sure force their belief`s down my throat. "Why don`t you go to church?", "Are you going to raise your kids like that?", "Do you believe in Satanism?", "Was your mom a wiccan or something?", "You know you`re going to hell!", "You`re ignorant if you don`t believe in God!" And I can go on and on. I have heard these things over the course of my 30 years on this earth not just from my family but from people who are not even close to me. So don`t get up on your high horse and tell me that "christians" will not judge me. Okay, so here`s my opinion (and my opinion only)...I think if we had a logical minded, atheist running the world, it would be a much better place.

So which theory of gravity is correct? Einstein or Newton?

Einstein explains the force of attraction best but still relies on unproven theories. I CBA to explain every theory that surrounds the standard model of gravity. You will have to do some reading.

Cheers for the respect and that, and I appriciate your opinion, but the fact remains the fundamentals of science are based on theory. It`s been proven by observation to be in existance but our understanding of it cannot be proven.

FYI: Gravity is still a theory, we don`t fully understand why we are glued to a mass, but it`s the best explanation we have. Also Newtonian gravity as defined is not the entire story.

Every thing in science is based a theory and becomes a law once proven.....

EG your example gravity: An apple falling from a tree gave newton the theory he proved it and it became Newton`s Law.

joey7415963, I respect what you are saying but I must take issue with some things you say. Not everything is science is based on a theory. There are laws, such as gravity. Also, and more important, Therory in scientific terms is not like “I have a theory on who committed the murder”. The way theory is used in everyday life would be more equivalent to a hypothesis in science. Sorry but that really gets me when people say that. Other than that, I respect what you have said.

The stereotype of an American Christian she may be but you are the stereotype of a typical Atheist. I don`t carry around signs condeming people to hell, the bible teaches that it`s not our decision to make. I accept people to who they are and I don`t "diddle" little boys. Yes, the Catholic church does have a problem with pedo`s but then I reckon ratio-wise there are more murderes/pedo`s outside of church than there are inside, purely because of the nature of the doctrines. There are plenty of Christians serving your country and in other countries. Now let me give you some insight, everything science has told us is based on a theory, I`m not disputing any of the theories but they may or may not exist. In essence you have to either believe in a structured universe that has been and will be in infinite existance and extent or a supreme deity that has been and will be infinite in existance and extent. Either seem illogical and ludicris!

I don`t understand what you think we are all about. But let me give you some insight. There is no heaven and hell. We are all we have. This is it. And that is the reason why I try and help those who I am able to help. There is no "supreme being" that is going to come an rectify this world. WE`RE IT! And if we are going to make it then we need to stick together toward a common goal. And that common goal is NOT condemnation and damnation for people who are different. Sorry, to burst your bubble.

Oh for drat sake, how can you say she`s an atheist? Wrong answer my friend. She`s your typical judgmental, "puritanical", damnatory and ungrateful CHRISTIAN. I am an atheist and proud of it. I don`t carry signs condemning people to "hell" for their actions or whom they choose to love. You guys do that. I accept people for what they are. I don`t believe in diddling little boys but it seems okay in the catholic church. Heaven forbid these men should marry, but drating kids is ok! Cause you know that bible of yours has a dogma

I have seen a few things similar to this and I wonder how much understanding there is behind their protests. It is unpleasant and vicious- but almost meaningless in its breadth - like trying to hate a nation because of, say, fat people- or people who study Maths. I read this first off as USA = cigarette nation, which makes just as much sense. whilst I believe in free speech I do not believe in the right to try and teach children stupid and dangerous nonsense. Poor child is an object of ridicule and I doubt she has any idea why!

For example, if someone`s religion states they must smoke constantly, it may be reasonable to allow them to do so in no smoking areas.

It may also be reasonable to make exceptions. (Fire hazards? Petrol Stations?)

The reason for this is not to encourage or endorse religion. This is to prevent discrimination which would effectively end access for those people to various services, and make it impossible for "Smokers" to exist in the country.

It is the same reason I am strongly against the "Under God" portion of the pledge, which as I stated earlier, was
added
with the expressed goal of discriminating against Atheists and making it clear they were not part of the nation.

Is it wrong to say "Under God"? No, not at all.
Was it wrong to use it in that way? Absolutely. It is against everything your forefathers stood for.

"Should religious speech have more protection than any other kind of speech - legal or not?"

Yes... but I think you worded the question slightly inaccurately for what you might mean.

"Should someone be able to say something they would normally not be allowed to say, simply because it is religious?"

No, they should not.

The reason the answers to these questions are different, is because one factors in possible discrimination.

It`s the same reason Blacks should have more protections, but not more rights. Those protections are there to try to balance an inherent inequality, with the desired end effect being an overall fair system.

Obviously nobody gets it perfect, but this is not an argument against it.

"Should religious speech have more protection than any other kind of speech - legal or not?"

The biggest issue is that the following court case would be long and very painful. Various religious groups would attack the courts for persecuting a religion`s right to speak its particular belief. Government tries to keep its hands out of the church`s business. In the case of the WBC, they have NO church affiliation, so they have no higher power to police their actions. They`ve managed a way to have their own little happy society outside of the government`s eye. If the government were to come out and say openly that they do NOT honor the WBC`s rights as a church, they could then make them answer for their activities.

Question:

If `community standards` is/was used as the test for what is considered pornographic (ie protected speech) why can that same standard not be applied to these people? They clearly offend community standards eveywhere they go...

Could it be because their speech is religious in nature? Because they throw the word God in their hateful speech?

Should religious speech have more protection than any other kind of speech - legal or not?

Hell, when I used to pray in the house I did it away from my brothers and sisters so they wouldn`t feel obliged to follow suit. (My brothers and sisters used to copy alot of what I did).

The US doesn`t practice exile as punishment, but if we did, I`d be all for revoking these peoples` citizenship and booting them to Abu Dhabi or something. That way, we wouldn`t have to grant them aforementioned rights.

Balthazaaq, its not about Freedom of Speech. If it were, they`g have been shut down a long time ago. Its about the fact that they persecute the entire country as if we`re ALL sinners and that God hates soldiers, and thats why they die at war, etc.

Its not that they do anything illegal. Its that they are rude, immoral, and disrespectful religious zealots when their "Baptist" church isn`t even a true ordained church. They`re just a Southwest family that turned cult and try to justify their insanity by finding any means they can to get media attention.

Incidentally though... what`s the actual fight about?

Censorship? The UK has no reason to address the concerns of foreign citizens. WBC are foreigners, and thus have no right of entry to the UK if they pose any threat.

This is OK.

Freedom of speech has limits. It just does. It always has.
"These pills cure cancer and do not in any way cause brain tumors" if a lie, will get you very arrested.

Speech causing harm to others, is not covered by freedom of speech. It just doesn`t. Encouraging murder (or the committing of any crime) is not covered by freedom of speech.

Though talking about the repeal of laws that make them a crime is fine.

In this particular picture, she is doing nothing illegal that I can see, so it should be allowed to happen.

On the other hand if she was arrested for being a public nuisance, I`d be fine with that too. I`m also fine with a total ban on picketing funerals.

Look at it like this. The US would not allow a known fundamentalist Muslim fanatic preacher to come into America. He would be denied entry because he incites hatred and violence.
We have the same rule, but we apply it to all inciters of violence.

If the Westboro Baptists were UK citizens, they would not be turned away at UK immigration. The BNP is a prime example of people who espouse hatred but are not expelled from our country. However, we choose not to allow preachers of hate into our country, no matter which faith they subscribe to.

If I express hostile anti-American sentiments I would not be entitled to enter the US. If I voice support to an anti-maerican or terrorist group I would be banned from entering the US. If I am `suspected` of being violent I would be banned. Is it then wrong that we block someone who has fallen into the category of fomenting hatred, of such extreme views and expressing them in such a way that it is actually likely to cause inter-community tension or even violence if that person were allowed into the country?

Whoop whoop, we got to the Nazis. The fundamental rule of internet debate, “If you believe that then that`s what the Nazis wanted”. I`m stunned. How does this equate to Nazi book burning? We allow their opinion but choose not to allow their presence as it would incite violence. That doesn`t sounds like book burning to me. The fact that the BBC did an impartial programme about their beliefs with cooperation from the WBC proves what I`m saying. The voicing of their opinion is acceptable but we choose not to allow them to come here.

Never said individuals cant oppress other. I said the operative word was power.
Power-the possession of control or command over others; authority; ascendancy: power over men`s minds.

In this case, you have absolutely no ability to oppress me since you have no power in one way or another. Power doesn`t just mean authority, there are also informal powers.

So tell me how you the (definition 1) "tyrant", can (definition) "keep me feeling down"?

Flip the script around Mo. Lets say we live in a nation where gays are forbidden. And lets say you hold a sign that says "Gays are a part of our isle, live with it".
From the society`s perspective, that seems like a message of hate towards their pre-established culture. But in your case, you just wanted to be heard.

The belief of not tarnishing the sainted isle or whatever is similar justification of what the nazi`s had when it came to burning Jew authored books.

Yeah..I learnt you couldnt even outwit a cabbage but keep going Prime!

Definitions of oppression:

* the act of subjugating by cruelty; "the tyrant`s oppression of the people"
* the state of being kept down by unjust use of force or authority: "after years of oppression they finally revolted"
* a feeling of being oppressed

So...individuals can not be oppressed by another eh?

Yeah..keep coming bud. I`ve knocked you down so many times its not funny anymore!

But it`s not blocking their views it`s just blocking their cloven hooves setting foot on our sainted isle (I`m not religous by the way, it`s just a nice way of putting it). The fact that I can read about their views as opposed to people in China being unable to read about their own country`s history demonstrates that we have freedom of ideas.

Unlike you, they never state anyone should kill or hurt anyone. I support the rights of racists to holler from the roves there various opinions, EVERYONE is allowed to say ANYTHING, provided it does not incite immediate violence. Any limits to free speech are grave dishonors to the country that perpetrates them, and I am truly sorry that you live in a country that feels the need to DISCRIMINATE against people based on their opinions.

"That is not blocking the freedom of expression but it is saying that we choose not to have those people in our country."

I disagree. I think anything that limits ones personal views is blocking freedom of expression. If it promoted violence such as "kill all ..." then that would be a matter of concern. But that is a genuine view that someone has. If it is not slander, liable, and does not promote criminal activity, why limit it?

Hate to have a dig at the mods, but primetimekin, that is plain ignorant. Their views can be published in the UK but they are not welcome here due to our incitement laws. They incite hatred and that is not deemed to be acceptable. We have enough haters in this country without importing. Anyone who incites hatred against a community in the UK will not be allowed in. That is not blocking the freedom of expression but it is saying that we choose not to have those people in our country.

circular logic is circular?

Let`s ignore the fact that this has nothing to do with I-A-B. As in, I-A-B is a private enterprise and does not protect free speech.

"So..is that ok? Is it ok for more to say those things or should I be banned?

Your call. Admit your wrong or get me banned and prove I`m right! "

If its heads you win and if its tails I lose?

So lets see...ad hominem, circular reasoning, false dichotomy....anything else im missing here?

"I`m sure she wouldn`t do this without a good reason."

KucheKlizma

The photo is someone from a Westborough Baptist rally - one of the most vicious, and active, anti-gay hate groups in the U.S.

They used to just picket the funerals of gay men who died of AIDS, but when their dreams of criminalizing homosexuality and executing homosexuals did not become U.S. law, they broadened their efforts to protesting the funerals of U.S. service people as well.

About three years ago, they had a video up on the `net - "God hates the world" which bluntly cursed and maligned everyone other than themselves.

So, tell us all, what `good reason` exists to justify this abusive, degrading, dehumanizing, genocidal behavior?

Keep complaining about how sh*tty USA is if you like, but there are literally millions who would move there given the chance. There are also quite a few thousands who risk their lives to do so.
My point is: USA isn`t nearly as crappy a place to live as some of you pansies would like to make it seem.

@The_Maddog and other freedom haters:
You don`t seem to understand that free speech rarely needs to protect things that are popular. No one is going to try to silence popular opinions, it is the unpopular ideas that need to be protected most. Also, he would most certainly "get away" with saying these things in any really free country, and if you think he would be locked up in the U.K., then I recommend the U.K."start catching up".

If we could only ignore them long enough for them to either go away or get arrested and then not cover the court proceedings, The media is what is giving them the incentive to continue.
