I think it got stuck in the mud when the mud was wet. The moose died and the mud dried. As the moose decomposed it left a large space where it`s body once had been.

"This leads me to conclude that the moose was pretty damn stupid."

Xtreme dude - I hope you don`t work as a CSI.

The reason it walked right on into a crack is scattered about the pictures.

Can you see it?

(s)No?

It may appear sad, but think. How did this moose end up lodged inside this crack? Seriously...how?! This is what we call `Natural selection`. This leads me to conclude that the moose was pretty damn stupid.

"I wonder why the head is the last part to fully decay :/"

Because none of the scavengeous animals (birds especially) eat the head usually. They will get the meaty parts. The maggots will take care of it eventually, but since the fur is still on the head, it may take a bit longer.

**And also the skin is so tight or taught along the snout that it tends to leather up more so than decay. Especially in a hot arid (dry) climate such as this apparent dessert.

Fossil in progress. If left alone, it would eventually fill with dirt/debris and preserve the bones. :)

Someone should throw some weird random objects in the pit (or dress the moose skele) so that a few million years from now (should someone find the fossil) it totally confuses whoever digs this moose up.
"Aha! This moose died from bad orthotics! Look at those shoes on its feet, they didn`t even fit properly!"

No no kids... it`s okay... it... it was Moose Hitler. It was slowly but surely evicting all the woodland creatures that didn`t have `superior` antlers. The bunnies banded together in a valient effort to stop history repeating itself in the animal kingdom. Their attempts must have been sucessful.
