@SarahofBorg

"The only reason we keep them in miserable shelters is because of our OWN safety. Wild dogs can attack people and spread disease. That`s the ONLY reason."

Not true. Any dog/cat that gets picked up by animal control can be put into a shelter. Household dogs and cats, puppies and kittens: people`s pets. Not just wild aggressive animals.

I`d have to disagree with Sarahofborg with regards to the behavior not being evidence of abuse.
I run a large foster home for abandoned/found/abused ferrets, and have had around 10 in my house for the past 5 years. There are distinctive behaviors that betray a history of abuse, and the dog was displaying them.
Dogs who are raised in loving homes very rarely display such a level of fear of new people and situations. Fear defecation is one, as the dog`s body tenses up in preparation for fight or flight. The screaming, self evident. The showing of the belly is a submissive gesture, and in this situation is not a display of trust. Shrinking away from touch... the list goes on.
Yes the bulk of my experience is with ferrets, and not dogs, so I`m not an expert, but I`ve dealt with the aftermath of abuse too many times, and you begin to recognize behavior patterns. I see them here.

"The misconception that shelters are "doggy-jails" or filled with "bad dogs" is something that needs to be changed. They are not better off being "wild dogs" when they can get ran over by cars, starve to death, or get eaten by other wild animals. "

I know they`re not bad dogs, it`s just the closet analogy I could make. But it`s either the dog is miserable in a small cage surrounded by constant chaos and is terrified of everything, or it`s miserable living wild because of all the dangers. And they definitely won`t starve, dogs are smart enough to know to eat garbage. Many animals get hit by cars, they`re going to die eventually anyway. Is it so much worse than euthanasia? Getting eaten by wild animals would actually help control the dog over-population.
The only reason we keep them in miserable shelters is because of our OWN safety. Wild dogs can attack people and spread disease. That`s the ONLY reason.

FML, there`s no reason to believe it`s some special abuse. This is what ALL dogs tend to become like when they`re in a kennel for long enough. Most dog kennels are hell-holes, trust me. I would rather euthanize a dog than make it live in that kind of place. It`s not the kennels fault either, there`s only so much they can do with SO many unwanted dogs and limited funds. It`s a shame. I often think stray dogs would be better off roaming wild in the streets than in doggy-jail.

I love dogs and its always sad when they are scared. That was pretty darn cute at the end.

Certainly brought a tear but I`m just too cynical for this. They don`t say she got a home, just that they calmed her down. And it`s not like she`s all fixed, she`ll forever have mental problems from the trauma of merely being in a shelter.
This is why they euthanize these animals, because living in a shelter drives them insane and makes them miserable, not because they just give up. The dog is lucky now, but it would have been better had it not been in that situation to begin with.

So yeah, this made me cry. Why? Because it got rescued, Joy? Nop. Because all it needed was a little love and he seemed to appreciate it so much? Well maybe a little. But the real reason this made me cry is ANGER! It is obvious this dog was severely abused by the previous owners. And it makes me so angry... so angry I cry, and really want to bash some skulls into the pavement. I’d love to kick their fuc*king teeth in, gauge their eyes out with my thumbs and make them beg for mercy... just like the pup did.

@kim: the cat was probably a stray that kept to itself. That dog probably trusted a few people who weren`t as kind as you were, and now she`s learned to distrust humans. For the sake of her puppies, she`ll probably never treat you kindly.

But anyway, this was the cutest thing I`ve ever seen. Poor baby just needed someone to snuggle with!

I probably never understand the double negative that is "Tears of Joy"
--------

I think you mean oxymoron, not double negative. But anyway, many people react to any very strong emotion--pain, happiness, anger, fear--by crying. It`s not uncommon.

@ kimkio, its because dogs are more loyal than cats and you need to work harder for their trust, cats will go to whoever gives them food =| like how there are guard dogs but no guard cats

i always thought that dogs are smart, all they want is love, etc

until this stray dog gives birth to these puppies near my dorm. she is so weak and thin so sometimes she can`t feed her puppies. i give her food. but whenever she sees me barks at me, i don`t feel scared, i don`t run away but she never gets used to me even though i feed her.

sometimes when she wasn`t there, i gave the puppies some milk but they bark and growl at me too. why? why don`t they trust me? i try to feed her and she tries to bite me

i feed cats whenever i see them too. and they get used to me easily and, once, i tried to pet the kitten of the mother cat i feed, but kitten got too scared and he started running off screaming and you know what the mother did? she HOLD the baby for me to pet it!!! then she let go when i stopped!

and this makes me confused about knowing if cats or dogs are smarter

That was awww of the decade in my books... brought tears to my eyes. I`m always happy to see a dog get rescued. My beautiful Husky is a rescue, and I can`t, for the life of me, understand why two different families would have given him up

Yes, never euthanize strays.

Let them run the streets in packs. Much better.

Make sure your kids are locked up safe...

"There should never be a reason to put down a dog.`
Agreed :D Unless they are paralyzed or so tortured they are permanently violent there really isn`t a reason.
I love dogs even though I`m allergic to them. It kills me when I see them abused.

wonder what was done to that poor dog before they got to him. As scared as that dog was he never tried to bite.
I am amazed though this is one of the few saved dog storied that DIDN`T make me cry, it was sweet though.
and a tail wag doesn`t always mean they are happy, means different things depending what position the tail is in.

There should never be a reason to put down a dog. There is an organization called `Dogs for the Deaf` they train and place dogs all over the place http://www.dogsforthedeaf.org
