I don`t get it. So the black people are saying it`s racist for the teachers to select black people to represent them?

STFU "black community". You can`t ignore all the bad black people history gave us. You don`t see us getting upset when the teachers talk about Hitler during White History Month.

This kind of nonsense will always occur as long as we are separating ourselves through history, and color. Black history month is a racist thing in the first place, because it`s simply something else that separates us from equality. Good intentions makes a victim of a race.

That was my "oh poo, I`m going to get it now" statement for the evening.

so what is the qualification for a black role model? Muhammad Ali was a draft dodger, he said he did not believe in U.S. involvement in Vietnam, is he an idealist or is he just a plain coward who hid under the bed and refused to heed the call when the trumpets blared?

i don`t understand why these choices where 1. bad 2. offensive or 3. racist. i am hispanic and during hispanic heritage month we don`t care who you pick to do a drating report on, c/mon our month is from sep 15 - oct 15... even our MONTH IS JUMPING A BORDER FOR dratS SAKE. these people where not making a racist stand against black history month, its your history be proud of it.. maybe you feel shame for what your people have done? that`s not our fault. and like i said race is a social construct that needs to be disappeared through understanding its a biological trait

celebrating black history month is racist in of itself. we shouldn`t celebrate anybody`s skin color, cause it doesn`t matter. Yeah African Americans had a pooty past, but when the baby boomer generation dies out racism will go down i think.

@snukatoof

A couple of observations: First why the single quotes around minority? Blacks are a minority. That`s not an opinion, it`s a fact. And we call attention to the struggle because it`s a hugely significant part of our nation`s history. Just because you didn`t live through it doesn`t mean it didn`t happen, and by the way it`s still happening, largely due to people who deny its existence.

Second, are you black? If not, who exactly are you to say that Black History Month is "pointless?" Isn`t it the peak of false entitlement to assume that our opinions as white people matter, like, at all, in cases like this? Try understanding it before you deride it, otherwise you`re about as useless as possible in the debate. Could it be that BHM`s not being for you is what`s bothering you? You don`t have to take pride in it, but black folks sure as hell do, and they should, considering the struggle of their race in this country. It`s something that people care about. Deal with it.

This is ridiculous...
I`m sorry but black history month (which one? February or October?!) is absolutely pointless.
Call me a bigot if you wish, but bringing attention to the existence of a `minority` with some equivalent to ribbon wearing over the coarse of a month does nothing to achieve the equality that any minority wishes upon themselves.
Of course, the NAACP on their own is one of the most racist and most active organizations in the states, so I`m not surprised to see the black community have a problem with something so completely not newsworthy.
This is similar to Obama getting involved with the beef between a white cop and an old black man having it out during a possible breaking and entering investigation.

Re: Rupaul: um, totally. I think it`s pretty fair to get into intent here, and unless you really think that Rupaul`s gender-bending has helped progress black culture...which it hasn`t...and no one really thinks it has...it`s a cynical statement being made by racists. That`s it. That simple. No need to look any further, folks. It`s also cynical towards transgender people, incidentally, as Rupaul is being picked out in order to denigrate him. This really is simple: step one is recognize obvious stupidity/intolerance, step two is deride it because it`s ignorant and unproductive. There`s no argument for including any of these three people in a black history month celebration. Not a single one.

I love that some of you are trying to act like these teachers were "honoring" OJ Simpson was a reaction to his football career. Really. If you come from that angle, it`s a bit difficult to take your argument seriously. Typical knee-jerk wildly overrationalized reaction from seemingly everyone that`s not in the black community. OJ Simpson and Dennis Rodman were good athletes. If they were trying to pick good athletes, Jim Brown, Michael Jordan, Muhammad Ali, and Magic Johnson make just a BIT more sense, don`t you think? If you don`t think this was a blatantly racist act, just stick your head back up your ass where it came from.

"I don`t know what everybody`s problem is (and everybody who has a problem is white, so what does that say) with BHM."
Boadicea
Female, 18-29, Canada

The point is that statement is false.

"Black people had no place in history, because when history was going on, they were being treated like crap."

You are aware that history didn`t just start within the last two hundred or so years right?

"All I learned about in school was what a bunch of old white guys did"

We spent as much time on George Washington Carver as we did on Thomas Edison. "Black History" is too covered in the text books.

Phyllis Wheatly, George Washington Carver, Thurgood Marshall, The Harlem Renaissance, Martin Luther King, Malcom X, Rosa Parks, and these are people off the top of my head.

What are you expecting? Do you want there to be a 50/50 split between black and white in history Books? Why don`t other minorities get the same treatment? Why?

the father of barack obama is a kenyan, never was a slave, his mother is a white american..so barack cannot relate to the black american slaves ..rodman was the best rebounder of the bulls and contributed greatly for their championships, OJ was once the greatest star in football.. whats wrong with being gay and a cross dresser..is this against the law? so tiger woods cannot be a role model now because he is not only a golfing genius but because he loves tons of sex which is normal for a healthy straight male? if these scions of slaves feel so discriminated why don`t they just go back to africa and settle in the land of their ancestors? only the lazy, malcontent and incompetent feel discriminated against

Whine, cry, b*tch, moan.

Just because OJ is a convicted criminal doesn`t undo his football career. He just did something incredibly stupid. Same with Rodman. I can`t really say anything positive about rupaul, because I don`t really know anything about him.
They weren`t great examples, but despite their stupid choices later in life they certainly were prominent figures in history.

I love the way the news channel is playing it up like the teachers were showing porn to 6yr olds. Way to over dramatize jackholes.

As said by others, Morgan Freeman did say it best. The whole thing is an excellent example of how a society has become so terrified of being branded racist, they go completely the other way and put races in the spotlight un-intentionally. Sort of like the Barack Obama paradox- Everyone implied it`s a great inoculation against racist ideology that America has a black president, but by saying that, they are judging him by the colour of his skin, which is wrong. Very ironic.

From what I have seen from working in a truly diverse college side convenience store:
Good people I`ve seen: Whites: 60%
Blacks: 10%
Questionable: Whites: 20%
Blacks: 50%
Truly horrible: Whites: 15%
Blacks: 38%
Unknown/Undecided: Whites: 5%
Blacks: 2%

Point of this post? From what I have seen from personal observation, there are nice people and there are bad people, and somehow the stereotypes rise up.
Call me racist, but that`s just how I view what I see. I`m not belittling anyone, it`s just something that I learned I HAVE to do, or else I get stuff stolen... the stories I could tell from working there...

i know the iab mob is pretty intelligent, but just in case an outsider reads this.

why DO schools have race based monthly lesson plans? race isn`t even a real thing, race is a social construct that we all propagate. race doesn`t distinguish people by belief, gender, action, or anything one can become. its a barrier constructed based on things a person can not control, biology, physical traits, genetics. why is it ok to group people up based on circumstances not in their power to change or affect. it seems to me that schools are embracing racism through these tactics, instead we should teach children about social constructs and their effect on people as a whole. maybe that would actually give kids something that actually mattered

Okay, I get it. People socially segregate themselves into groups with of people with similar political, social, and lifestyle choices as you.

If one of those choices is race, then you`re the one who is saying the PIGMENTATION of your drating skin IS A CORE MORAL VALUE IN YOUR LIFE.

Please explain to me how you hope to win this battle. You`re championing the rights of black people, but black people are no better or worse than everyone else. You standing there pretending that the pooty black people don`t exist, doesn`t make the rest of the black people MORE MORAL. It only makes people think that SKIN COLOR MATTERS AT ALL.

what your communicating here is that skin color trumps morality

I guess I`m like a lot of other people here. I think the objection to Rupaul is based on homophobic sentiment. S/he speaks out about positive self image, equality, and being oneself, personally I would want my children to learn about this.

OJ`s later actions do not negate his contributions to football, if anything, he could be used as a cautionary tale, one with educational value. Same with Dennis, he followed his own inner path, and while some may object to his dress wearing antics, something is to be said for his strength of individuality.

It`s all about the way you look at it, I would have liked to see exactly how the teachers dealt with the subject matter.
And I wish we had seen the whole cut of the lady in the car talking about how she didn`t want her kids to learn about Rupaul, I`d have liked to know why, and then perhaps the story may have been about a different type of discrimination

And honestly, I am so fu*king sick of hearing black people whining. I mean, they literally keep themselves separated from people now with all of this BS. Yes, there is racism, there probably always WILL be, but come ON. You have a black president for god sake, racism isn`t THAT bad if we do. Hell, in almost ALL of my classes, I was the only white girl, and I would LITERALLY get fu*ked with for being white. They are just as guilty for racism as anyone else is -_- The only way we can all be completely equal, is if we stop looking at each others races, and looking at people as individuals instead. However, since the human race is a hateful animal, I don`t think this will happen anytime soon. /rant.

Everyone who is "Black" is part of "Black History". Then again, I think we should just do away with "Black History Month", and admit that it`s all part of History. Every day of the year (in America at least) is about White History. Black people had no place in history, because when history was going on, they were being treated like crap. I don`t know what everybody`s problem is (and everybody who has a problem is white, so what does that say) with BHM. One month out of the year, people learn a bit about black history, since it`s not a huge part of the textbooks in school. BHM isn`t some kind of punishment, and it`s not putting black people on a pedestal or something- it`s just a month. All I learned about in school was what a bunch of old white guys did - I never learned much about what women contributed to history because they`re simply not in the textbooks. Nobody cares about women, nobody cares about black people. And in Canada, nobody cares about native people. Everybody is still racist and the world is still poo.

Like 2 or 3 others on this board, I`m offended that people are offended about this.

Black History Month? Brilliant. I`ll just put that one in my diary, oh wait, I`ve got Chinese, Indian, Native American, Maori, Fijian, Caucasian and Inuit history months too coming up. Hmmm, when are we going to find time to teach children useful things like maths and science?

I don`t remember who said it, but the worst sort of sexist is a man that thinks women need to be defended and taken care of. Along the same track, the worst sort of racist is one that thinks black people need concessions to make them feel equal. What happened to equality meaning equality? Why can`t we learn about black people that have done bad, as well as white people?

I mean seriously. This is as bad as the Music of Black Origin Awards we have over here in the UK. Imagine if someone suggested a music of White Origin awards? There would be uproar.

I have no problem with black people. I don`t care what shade of..

My personal quote is that "When you define yourself by race, you are not part of the human race"

Seriously... you could be black... white... asian, hispanic, native american... or human. Your call.

I`m all for celebrating culture (even one`s that aren`t my own)... but people are idiots when it comes to defining their society.

"We didn`t give black people the shortest month of the year so that we could honor people like OJ Simpson."

what the hell is wrong with everyone.

PEOPLE ARE (virtually) EQUAL NOW. blacks dont need a "history month". what do you think whites and the other 11 months? thats bs. everybody, blacks, asians, whites, have every month of the year. what makes february so special for you black people? nothing. your just like us. there`s no white history month.

it`s as if you just want february to praise black people or something. waht the hell.

race is taken way too seriously. i treat someone with different color skin the same way i would treat a person with different color hair. there`s no "blonde history month".

WOW the world is retarded

Another example of hiding the kids from the truth. Besides, why do we need these race months anyways? Do we have to mention their race? Because that seems more racist than anything else. What about all the other races who don`t get their month?

So OJ Simpson was not a part of history? If you want to have a "race" based history month, then you better take the good with the bad. Suck it up!

Just an after thought... where would Micheal Jackson fit into all this??

hooray for christians and conservitaves taking poo way to far. black history month is a joke BTW why should we set aside a whole month to recognize the achievements of ONE race, why not one month celebrating the most important people in history or a month for each race (though we would need to do some serious consolidating)

"black history month itself is racist"

I agree. Racism will exist so long as there are groups to divide us. And Ouch, RuPaul, and Denis Rodman must feel like poo.

Give me a break. First off, the month itself is racist. Second, who gives a poo? Every time a teacher gets on the news they push to get the teacher fired. drat that.

As for why the month is racist: Racism will only be abolished when everything is equal. By putting one group in front of the other, no matter the context, there will be racism.

i get that they were supposed to be choosing prominent and positive figures and while those 3 might not have been perfect role models they werent bad or anything. just cause a guy looks or acts different than what is accepted in the mainstream doesnt make them bad. nor does having a run in with the law, hell the entire civil rights movement was based around breaking the law. all 3 of those guys made great livings and are very well known and respected, this should be a total non-issue

I don`t see what the problem is. Stupid school official is only worried about HIS job. Funny how people twist things to the way THEY want to view it and expect others to go along with them. You think kids don`t learn about white people who are not the "best" role models? Should Hitler not be studied? Come on people.

See, I thought that each teacher/class picked one person to represent, but each one had their own list with probably 50 or so people on it. It just so happened that three of those teachers had these people included. And when you`re making a list like this... you`d probably start reaching for straws as well "hm... well they DID do this". The only one who remains questionable is OJ... but he was a great, great, great football player, so maybe... meh.

Time for me to pull out of the conversation and distract you with this GIF.

1. "Rupaul actually could be considered to have done something valuable for gay, black, transgendered people but the other two don`t really have the cultural cachet."

I keep seeing that sentiment echoed by a few people and it`s something I hadn`t considered but I can agree with it.

2. "@peloos12 about 49 secs in: "there was a whole list, says this student""

It also said the list was made by the teachers, each class`s list was different.

3. Those things considered, I don`t see the big deal anymore.

That said, we should also not teach students about MLK, or else we`re advocating blatant plagiarism as a means to success.

"So it`s better to murder someone than to be openly gay? So if I come by and murder your spouse/friend/etc, that`d be loads better than if I were to live my life as a flamboyant girl in man`s clothes? That`s messed up right there"

Way to contort things and put words in my mouth.

My point is that if you IGNORE anything negative about all three of those people, and only look at the good things, you have a hall-of-fame football player, a hall-of-fame basketball player, and a transvestite. Notice that ignoring the bad is still leaving everything on the table for RuPaul. Being gay or transexual or whatever isn`t a bad thing, and RuPaul is innocent of any crimes, but what has he/she done that`s so great?

Only in bloody America.

If you want to honor your history and heritage then you must take the good AND the bad. You can`t just pick and choose what you like about history, teach that, and still get an accurate picture of what really went on.

We discuss all the countless other "bad people" of every other race constantly but the second a few "questionable" African Americans are brought up then they are labeled as racist.

Unless you went through the first part of last century and the Civil Rights movement, you have no IDEA what racism is. You may have been looked at wrong or someone did something you didn`t like but you probably weren`t chased down by dogs, sprayed with fire hoses or beaten in the street because of your skin color.

rorschach - im with you man. black history month is for all black folks not just the cookie cutter people in books. rodman was pretty badass in his hayday and oj was a decent football player, i mean switch him out for tyson.. tyson is arguably in the top 5 most iconic fighters of all time. all people have bad sides and good sides. im sure mlk and nelson mandela have their demons. its all a matter of what they have done to cover their mistakes up. rupaul... and i can`t believe im saying this has been a herald for all people like him he lives his life openly, isn`t that a good quality we want our children to have? these teachers are probably forward thinking open minded individuals and dont deserve to be deposed.

Noamfer: The people they selected are a man who`s famous for getting away with murder, a basketball player who was famous for doing flamboyant things such as wearing a wedding dress and having his hair dyed neon colors all the time, and a guy famous for being a transvestite. Basically, there are no contributions from any of them.

@KingDragon There`s no way there was a list because if there had been these three people would have never been on it.

You know racism is the most overblown topic in the history of the universe and the only way it will ever go away is if we stop talking about, but for once I can see what they`re angry about.

Damn right it`s racist.

Three teachers pick a greatly successful footballer, a greatly successful basketballer, and TBH a guy I`ve never heard of but who seems pretty confident in himself. The fact that they`re getting disciplined tells you only one thing: they`re white.

Racist as hell.

@glooStikk good point, if those men are calling racism, it makes you wonder. This si not true of all people, but a lot of the time something done by a person of your own color doesn`t offend, but if a person from another race did it, you would call them racist. :\ (well not YOU, but in general, you know?)
