Does it not look like his hand is on a DRAWING of the wooden model to anybody? The shadow of his index finger is as it would be on something flat, DESPITE it going across an edge of the model. If anybody can give me a reason why this would not be true, I would love to hear it

The part that makes it confusing is sanded so it twists.
Like the middle of this piece of wood.

I see it as 2 pieces of wood.. the front piece of wood is sanded down closer to the stepped part.. And the shapes are not rectangles.. but isosceles trapezoids lol.. I might be wrong.. Cause I`m looking at the grain and it doesn`t make complete sense with my idea.

I don`t know, I still like my version better. Occam`s razor and all that.

@ Diaphram, lets just say he had an argument with his wife before he took the picture...

I figured it out and nettech98 almost had it. There are actually four blocks. all of the illusion is in the closest end of the blocks. The small diagram is a view looking down on the blocks.

Looks like one solid piece of wood to me. Its just the way the grain looks at that angle plus the shadow.

"Stop saying shopped!" *sobs* "You`re killing me, you know that, just ripping into my soul with your inability to read the dozen explanations for this in the comments. Oh woe is me, woe is me!" *breaks down into fetal position and continues bawling*

I like the idea that it could be done physically - but I think its shopped. The grain changes abruptly on the peice beneath his thumb.

Sorry - what I meant to say was - his hand is on wood.

i still don`t get it (saw the boowashere explanaiton) is there a video explaining? or is this just shopped?

There`s a little glare on the right side, I think it`s from a mirror.

A thin slice off one end, a straight cut almost through, an angle cut almost all through, and its a camera-angle trick. Extend the wood edges to see. Top-down views added

Or it`s not shopped and there are three pieces of wood and the seam is hidden by the guys` fingers.

It`s totally shopped. And no lucky wood grain match. You are looking at the wrong end. That end is where one piece ends and you are seeing the inside of the other piece. The unlucky non wood grain match is at the other end.

That is reasonable SmagBoy1, except now the fingers are surreal. They couldn`t cast shadows like that if the "side" wasn`t flat.

Shopped.

I see it as a little bit nipped off the end at a 45 and maybe some shopping on the top to disguise the line, maybe just lucky woodgrain match? Like this...

Ah true, I forgot... we even had the Harry McGurk Effect one here on IAB a while ago. Duh me.

This is easy. They simply cut the right wood piece at a 45 degree angle, then took the left piece that was remaining, shaved off the top a bit to make it look a little different, and then screwed it onto the left piece. Then they simply played with the angle until the grains matched up. Although someone DID photoshop the line you would see running along were the cut was made.

theres one where it sounds like musical notes are continuously getting higher. thats not optical

The wood`s grain makes for an interesting illusion there.

Aren`t ALL illusions `optical` ones? I mean, can anyone think of an `illusion` that doesn`t use the power of sight?

I, for one, find it completely plausible to take such a picture without the aid of Adobe`s Photoshop program.

It probably is, as some older posts are, a simply trick of perspective, well-hidden by the convenient hand.

For example, I suspect the existence of a "third block" (notice the slight error in count, as the "first" and "second block" are actually a single one), which has its closest edge hidden by above-mentioned hand.

I will most definetly try to reproduce such photograph soon.

If you force your mind to follow the perspective you see when looking at the top, and keep it the same at the bottom, you see that the left wooden block has a slant cut, which gives off the illusion. Also that pencil trace on the bottom gives a deceptive border.

At least that`s my best guess.

This isn`t a particularly good optical illusion. It took me a while just to see the illusion, and it`s something that could easily be a real object just seen in a certain perspective and lighting.

Just when you think its the top right that odd its not its bottom left thats been edited (dam good) if you look where the hand and fingers are placed.

Cover the sawn off bit with your hand.

Not that hard to figure out. The bottom stick is carved out so that it only looks like a full stick. The fingers cover up where the wood grains start to look different.

"they only shaded a single corner, and I don`t think they even bothered taking 2 pics"

Thanks, that helped me see it.

The top block has its corner colored on the top right.

Vindictive:

it first looks like one block is on top of the other, then if you keep looking at it, they appear to be side-by-side.

hence, an optical illusion.
