This thing to flight is more like a motorcycle is to driving. It`s really cool, but it`s not quite a jet-pack just yet.

Jet packs have been around for years, the problem is that you can`t take enough fuel with you to sustane flight for any meaningful period of time.

oh, yeah, failsafe? So the only time the flight is failsafe is when you are at enough altitude for a parachute to be effective? Lolanding

This is why we don`t have flying cars. Notice that they did not do this in an airport hanger, this was basically a parking garage. Because they wanted to limit any unintentional unwanted ceiling. If this were some serious hardware they would have done this press release in a blimp hanger.

"the other problem is there`s no failsafe in place with jetpacks, if the engine fails you`ll plummet to your death rather quickly"...

Actually this thing will be fully equipped with such a failsafe... According to the website, it has a parachute that deploys if the engine dies midflight.

I`m sure that in our anti-terrorism zeitgeist, people will be more than willing to allow public sale of a device that turns a suicide bomber into a guided missile.

@maddog3n: i wouldn`t say big`s assessment it all that wrong, although the `jet fuel` idea is a bit exagerated.
the pack probably wont get past a `professional use only` stage(paramedics and emergency services, possibly millitary applications) and you`re probably looking at 3-5 years of further testing and licencing before they`re allowed to be used in a public arena. also you will eventually need a licence to opperate one the same as everything else. the other problem is there`s no failsafe in place with jetpacks, if the engine fails you`ll plummet to your death rather quickly, so i cant see you going down to your local car dealership or rental place and picking one up for the weekend.

"A company in New Zealand is to begin production of a commercial jet pack...Martin Aircraft Company, in Christchurch, New Zealand, aims to make 500 packs a year which will sell for around £50,000....Because it weighs less than 254 pounds (115kg) the jet pack does not require a pilot`s licence. It is capable of travelling 30 miles in 30 minutes on a full tank of fuel.... "

The future isnt now... It`ll still take 20 more years before you see these things at Best Buy or "Planet Ford Dealership! WE`RE DEALIN DAWG! FORD BUILT TUFF GURRRR!!"

Even then, you`ll be paying 30k for them then "special jet pack fuel" from chevron. And you`ll have to take a Jet Pack Pilot`s test.

It`s a long while coming.

Or at least 1971, which is when I saw my FIRST video of the JetPacks we`d all be wearing within a year or two.

You could never use that thing outside, the control surfaces might get influenced by wind or other factors (simple bird hitting it) and you would spin out of control

So it`s not really jet-powered, because it uses fans instead of jets of escaping gases, and not quite a "pack", since it`s five times as big as a pilot. Wouldn`t it be right to call it "fan-wardrobe" or something instead?

On a semi-related note, didn`t they try to build something like that in Mythbusters?

We will have these! ...as soon as we can reduce costs...

Awesome! Now all they have to do is get it to work to an acceptable degree of error outside of a controlled test space... That shouldn`t take more than 65 years. :|

I wonder what its like on gas
And how loud it is
And how high can it go
And how easy is it to control?

Had to bring the video resolution down to 480p to get smooth video viewing.

That said, This appears awesome.
Now some questions, How long can you fly ?, How much does it cost ?, Do you need a pilots license ?
