ARG. It pisses me off so much that they used a pot leaf to represent illegal drugs, while marijuana has not killed ANYONE. EVER. And it CAN`T kill anyone.

This infographic just illustrates why there is no reason that pot should be illegal. Why are cigarettes legal while they kill thousands of people every year. ><

LEGALIZE IT. Tax that sh-t and use it to pay for... hmm... oh... idk HEALTH CARE. It`s already the #1 cash crop in the US.

Yet people still do it... because they choose to. These people don`t have beach houses in Mexico, a smoke is their only way to take the edge off.

This is why people need to stop smoking cigarettes and smoke the electronic cigarettes... No smoke, and only nicotine enters your system. Looks, and feels like smoking without the cancer or second-hand smoke. www.dragnsmoke.com. I have yet to find a person who switched who didn`t love it.

Mcgovern, that`s the thing... a lot of people who smoke don`t even LIKE the flavor. They like the nicotine. They come in all different flavors. Chocolate, Turkish blend, Marlboro, clove, vanilla, cherry and more. It doesn`t have that nasty smoke taste.

I agree with you on that one. I never understood why Marijuana is illegal yet alcohol and tobacco kill more people every day than Marijuana ever has.

But we shouldn`t stop at legalizing Marijuana, we should continue to legalize every other sort and have it regulated by the federal government.

We don`t know what they cut the cocaine with and the strength isn`t constant. If we regulate the production/distribution of all drugs than we can help prevent overdoses and unwanted side effects.

Oh no, cigarettes have lots of chemicals in trace amounts... drinking water has limits on how much it can contain on many of these substances, and most (all?) of those limits are >0. It`s like complaining about radiation- we are constantly hit by it, so what matters is HOW MUCH.

That said, I don`t smoke and don`t care to, but I do appreciate good science.

Smoking is for morons. I heartily appluad the guy here who is on day 9 of quitting, keep it up and breath easier, you just extended your life.

I would like to see a brave, no B-S, non-politically correct version of what obesity does, it is a larger epidemic than smoking.

And for those of those who have forgotten, it is NOT ok to be fat, you can take control of your body through diet and exercise, starting today is a good plan.

Cigarettes and weed are both disgusting, they`re as bad as each other. Cigarettes just kill you, and weed just kills your motivation to do anything other than smoke weed. I know people who smoke both, they all spend huge amounts on them, it makes their breath and clothes stink, and honestly, they`re just pointless.

I think people should mind their business with this, I mean awareness is good and all but people are being hypocritical with this. I can`t smoke in a bar because of the health of others...your in a drating bar. Alcohol has no positive effects except lowering inhibitions, yet it`s great. Cigarettes have no positive effects except giving someone a buzz. I mean McDonalds is killing people all the time with their cholesterol induced food, yet its the consumer`s choice. The same principle can be applied to cigarettes. Infringing on peoples rights is what Americans are against but they support it all the time. Let people enjoy their vices, the normal ones at least...

    @BenTheBug,
It`s sad how it still isn`t at least legalized totally for medical use.
My uncle has severe cluster headaches. He has a choice in his state between stupid pills or a little marijuana spiked tea (Not enough to get even a little high); both of which gets rid of his headaches.
To those who say that Marijuana doesn`t help a thing & that clusters aren`t that bad:
    Imagine getting a brain freeze.
Now, imagine that brain freeze doesn`t go away.
Now, imagine having three ice picks shoved into the brain freeze.
    You have two choices now:
You can take a couple of pills that will knock your I.Q down to about 65 so you can barely process basic language; or you can drink a little spiked tea.

    What would you do?

I mean seriously, cigarettes taste like nothing, they don`t make me chill or relax and you know they are bad for you. If you`re gonna smoke at least man up to cigars or maybe a pipe. So 1 in 5 people smoke, and 1 in 5 deaths are `caused by cigarettes`? Sounds like someone is manipulating the stats a bit, whenever a smoker dies, it MUST have been the ciggies.

    Here`s some perspective for you:

If you live in any modern city with a population above 45,000, you ARE a pack-a-day smoker from the industrial and exhaust fumes anyway. Or to put it another way, a smoker living in the mountains and smoking a pack a day, is actually far healthier than a non-smoker in the city.

Those mean nasty killers also just happen to lower your blood pressure, reduce your chance of Alzheimers , endometrial cancer, Parkinson`s disease, ulcerative colitis, and hypertension. (Source: Official Govt Quit Smoking Website)

But you won`t see that info splashed around the place either, that would make ciggies look possibly ok.

Yes you can, this is a common myth. You can overdose on WATER if you drink enough of it. What you mean is `its nearly impossible to overdose on weed`, which is true, because it has such a high LD50. However, like getting drunk, the danger comes not from the substance itself, but the effects it has on your reflexes and judgment. There are plenty of MJ-attributed deaths on the road each year.

    3. If someone told you blowing bubbles might possibly maybe prevent diseases you probably wouldn`t get anyway, is that worth the risk that it will kill you?

He specifically said overdose, as in purely from the effects of the drug, not what it may or may not make you do. everybody knows you can do stupid poo that`ll kill you whether or not you`re drunk, stoned, or sober.

So many of these "facts" are really fudged numbers. For example, the way it`s defined by the American Heart Foundation, if you are 97 years old and a smoker and have a heart attack and die. You didn`t die of old age and were in your 90s, you died because of the cigarettes. They have even expanded it to circumstances where if you die and you LIVED with a smoker, it was the second hand smoke that killed you. By law, there is no such definition of "death by natural causes" or "old age" so they have to attach something to your death. If you smoke, that`s the cause by default.

    1. The AUSTRALIAN govt has spent more on tobacco research and has been trying to get people to quit for longer than almost any other country in the world.
    2. "Copyright © Quit Victoria, 1995" - Quit Victoria is the state of Victoria`s government department for promoting the Quit program.
    3. I didn`t say it was worth smoking, I just said there are SOME health benefits... which are widely acknowledged by numerous studies.

Judging by the infographic, more people are dying of smoking than there are people becoming smokers. Smoking is a pointless endeavor, its something that should have died off in the 50s yet so many people still do it.

Half the posts on here I`d be justified in commenting merely with "people are stupid".

So if 1 in 5 people smoke, and 1 in 5 deaths are from smoking... nearly 100% of people who smoke die from it?

Granted it`s probably like 22% of people smoke and 19% of deaths are from smoking, and they just rounded both to 1 in 5... but still, it`s fishy.

The 1 in 5 people smoke, and 1 in 5 people die from cigarettes thing is misleading.
However, categorizing individuals into whether they are smokers or not, then investigate what they die by and their age, then taking the average, is not misleading. This is the stat people should pay attention to.
Smokers DO, on average, get more cancer. Smokers DO, on average, have a shorter longevity.

I don`t call myself a "smoker," though I do enjoy the occasional cigar.

"So if 1 in 5 people smoke, and 1 in 5 deaths are from smoking... nearly 100% of people who smoke die from it?"

No - for a start, it`s 1 in 5 people in the world that smoke, and 1 in 5 deaths in the US that result from smoking. So they have a different base population entirely (well, the former statistic encompasses the US). Even if the two numbers were representative of the same base population, 1 in 5 smokers and 1 in 5 deaths caused by smoking are not the same thing. Taking the US as an example:

    1 in 5 are smokers = 60 million people
1 in 5 deaths due to smoking = 443,000 people (annually)

also, i don`t get why people start smoking. in my opinion, any reason to start smoking will always be heavily outweighed by reasons to not smoke. having said that though, it`s your choice if you want to smoke or not. people who get militant about anti-smoking and do the whole fake cough thing kind of annoy me

    Reminds me of a joke...

    +++++++++++++++

A teenager is sitting on a park bench, minding his own business, smoking a cigarette. An elderly gent walks by, and stops and says to the kid, "Now now sonny, don`t you know that smoking is very bad for your health and the health of those around you? You should stop that disgusting habit immediately!"

The kid looks around, making sure that his smoke isn`t bothering anybody. "Well", he says, "my grandfather lived to be 88 years old".

"Really?" Asks the old-timer. "I suppose your point is that your grandfather smoked all his life?"

"No", says the kid, looking the elderly man dead in the eye. "He just had the good sense to mind his own f*cking business."

    +++++++++++++++++

When you see the $96 billion figure it looks bad, but at some point even non-smokers face end-of-life care expenditures. And if smokers die at age 64 on average, at least we aren`t spending our kid`s inheritances on nursing homes and Alzheimer`s treatment...

My Mom passed away on Christmas night of Emphysema and COPD. She never did drugs or even drank, but she smoked all of her life.

I watched her go down hill fast this last year. I carried her to her 3 to 4 doctors visits weekly, I carried her portable oxygen tank for her, gave her breathing treatments, picked up her precriptons, this list could go on and on.

The thing is, you don`t think anything is wrong with you, usually if you`re doing something harmful to your body, you will know it, but with this stuff, it can sneak up on you. She quit for years before she found out she was sick.

Think about suffocating, because that is exactly what happens, but it`s slow. It doesn`t happen fast. You get the feeling you can`t breathe, that scares you so you`re heart beats faster, that makes it even more hard to breathe. It goes on like that for months or years depending on what level of disease you get.

Oh and another thing, if you did smoke, for just a few years. Saying it`s not hard to stop is nothing. It is hard for people that have smoked for most of their lives, not just a few years.

Back years ago, the commercials would advertise smoking as "it will make you feel better".

Interesting side-note here. In Amsterdam where I lived for 7 years or so, it`s legal to smoke pot in licensed "Coffee-Shops". But recently they made it illegal to smoke tobacco in any public space. However, that law doesn`t extend to weed. So now it`s legal to smoke in coffee shops, as long as you`re smoking straight-up, 100% marijuana. Dude, if you cut that joint with 5% tobacco, you`re breaking the law...

@ nurcowski - Obesity is unhealthy and bad,no argument ther, but that does not make smoking any less so. There is no good reason to smoke, whereas obesity some people have to actively work at to avoid. It takes months and months of hard work to "fix" obesity, and knowledge of fitness and diet to do it. You don`t actively `choose` to become obese, but you do so through neglect and following natural urges. Smoking, you choose to do, and anyone in this day knows its unhealthy before they start.

But hey, it`s catching up right? Well, now you have to ask exactly how much you can trust that 443k a year figure up there, how`s about a little nugget to get you started?

Thank you, nurkowski for saying what all us average joes were thinking... Sure, obesity is bad for you, but there are some people who are quite happy in their big skin, just as there are those who are happy being smokers. All these opinionated douchebags can shove their self righteous nonsense up their arse.

Alright. Take all those chemicals in the cigarettes. What happens to a cigarette when you smoke it? It goes into the air, via secondhand smoke, and it goes on the ground via ashing and garbage and filters. So regardless of whether you smoke or not, you still probably gong to get cancer. Just throwing that one out there. Good luck living. And yes, I smoke. And I`m not necessarily proud of it.

They say smokers cost 97 +96 billion. I wonder how much smokers actually save? If one in five smokes and smokers die before they can claim their pension (as they die at 64). That should be an -enormous- amount of money that gets saved there. Enough to dwarf the 200 billion.

    I started in 1993 when i was 13 and continued smoking until 2004 when i was 24.

I quit smoking for health reasons (i was struggling for breath whilst doing XC on my bike); but i also used the extortionate price of cigarettes in England as a motivator towards kicking the habit.
It was £4.30 for a pack of my brand (Benson and Hedges Gold) when i stopped. It`s now £5.67.

One day i was feeling a bit miserable about my shortness of breath.
I then sat down and worked out that by smoking a pack a day, i was spending over £100 a month on cigarettes.
So i just stopped, no patches or gum for me, all i had was willpower. I was a bit tetchy for a couple of weeks but that`s all.

1 in 5 people are good are pointing out spelling mistakes. Don`t quite your day job.

Also alot of people here crying about weed. Not even gonna start. Just saying that weed icon is the most identified symbol for illegal drugs, can`t use syringe for heroin as that`s a medical symbol. does LSD and Xtasy have symbols?

Smoking is bad and it WILL kill you. But there are many other causes that might strike you down first.

Your brain relies on nicotine. The thought of giving it up makes you shutter and aggressive. Thus non-smokers should never encourage a smoker to give up. I used to have a few durries here and there when i went out clubbing, waking up with a mouth tasting like ash wasn`t pleasent (The cigarette taste was bad too). Pot wasn`t all that fantastic either.

2nd hand smoke is bad, dont believe me? stick ur friggen head at the end of a car exhaust for a few hours. Same god damn gases are coming out. Carbon Monoxide (And Trioxide??? >.<)

Way to ruin a good point with a completely ludacris example. That`s like equating the level of power in a battery to lightning. Not to Catalytic Converters, which were created and are now required to eliminate things like Carbon Monoxide from car exhaust, or that the natural gas the western world uses to fuel cars is free of carbon monoxide.

You watch entirely too many movies.

Harleg, yeah it was the first thing that came to mind, not enough characters to start talking about 3rd hand smoke. My girlfriends mum smoked when she was in womb, now her lungs are taking the toll for it, couldnt get into the police force because of it. Traces of ash within her housemates furniture/carpet make her cough up when brushed up against, let alone their car lol.

Are you insinuating that the smoke her mother inhaled affected her lungs or that the chemicals in the smoke did? That statement seems dangerously close to horrible self-diagnosis.

Could be coincidence that she has weak lungs. I`m no scientist (i am a civil engineer tho), so i couldn`t put my finger on chemicals or smoke. I just know her mother was a heavy smoker when she was pregnant. The chemicals might`ve inhibited growth and 100% function of her lungs, maybe the lungs react to the smoke the same way they did in the womb? It`s all assumptions from my side.

And yeah, potheads are fking self centred here, all the posts are "Make weed legal". How about find a good hiding spot and shut up? Several of the potheads i know complain about it being illegal. yet they still do it. I don`t care if you do it, either keep your mouth on your apple juice container bong or keep it shut.

And if we do make it legal, you won`t have anything to talk about, or you`ll start complaining about something else.

So no, no legalised pot for joo bebbes.

Well if it was smoking-related it would have to be the chemicals, a baby in the womb shares it`s mothers blood, the smoke itself would have no effect on the child`s lungs because the two never come in contact, but the chemicals in the cigarette could do damage. Chances are though if smoking did enough damage to actually affect her lungs she would have more serious health issues as well. She was probably born with normal lungs and an adverse reaction to cigarettes after being exposed during development, if her mother smoked while she was pregnant she probably also smoked afterwards, so bad reaction + being exposed to smoke while growing up could be the reason.

just for the record, smoking rolling tobacco with a filter is healthier than premade ciggerettes the top end of prerolled ciggerette brand such as malboro or camel contain about 40% tobacco in total after all the work put in preserving and such the rest is chemicals + useless stuff that is used to make it taste nice or last longer, the lower end ciggerettes such as Lambert and butler or benson and hedges contain even less tobacco, rolling tobacco leaves you with about 70% tobacco with a hell of alot less chemicals, but for even safer get an E-ciggerette as it contains only nicotine and works out a hell of alot cheaper in the long run, aswell as beating all smoking bans and not putting anyone in danger, it is what im going to end up smoking as i currently smoke rolling tobacco, search E-ciggerette on the internet i suggest smokers invest in one

how do they decide how many people are killed by second hand smoke? how could you prove a person was killed by that? how could you even say it was probable, i mean if you are around very heavy smokers than maybe, but that poos so exaggerated
