It isnt really spinning either way the segments are just changing from red to white although our brains wiring makes us want to see movement (which could be in either direction) try it with 3 colours and it will only look like it is spinning one way.... 100 points pls

It`s just the phi phenomenon without any directional bias.

Its caused by slow frame motion. our eyes take more frames per second then it delivers causing it to jerk. Because there are only 2 frames to this (metled together by our brains to make it appear spinning) then we can decide which way to view it. Staring at the centre causes an equal distance on all sides so you view it spinning one way, viewed in another way you see one side first meaning the brain makes an assumtion based on how close the lines are. It complicated to explain how the frame rate affects it.

it goes in the direction i want it to go. i like the black silhouette of a girl better because it`s 3d and has a more complex shape. much more mind boggling.

that whole close one eye thing doesnt work, i can still make it switch direction at will no matter how i look at it.

You can force yourself to think it appears to spin either way.

It took me all of 300 milliseconds to realize that this is retarded.

Depending on which angle(eye) you look at the image the shade of the red squares differentiates. Once angle goes clockwise with dark shade and other goes opposite with lighter tint.

Look at the red dot again, and now close one eye, then alternate to the other. It should change direction.

which has nothing to do with left right brain stuff.

it all depends on what part of your brain you are using(left or right)! ha i get 100 points!!

hehe, I guess they aren`t exactly spinning, just flashing between red and white.

this is nice though

I found it seems to change direction easier if you look at the top half and change your view from the top left to the top right and visa-versa.

The red stripes aren`t spinning at all. There are alternating red and white segments, but I don`t see them moving, I just see them switching from red to white and back again. There isn`t any movement, not even "phi" movement (look it up)

"100 online bonus points if you can explain why this happens... "
yknow that gives me an idea to suggest to have some kind of IAB point system. yknow, and if people do things that mods disapprove of, points can be taken away(obviously more points for more serious infractions) or given. and like so many points gives a certain rank or title(like MOD for mods, and so on).i think it would be a cool idea besides the post count. anybody else?

Each shape (either white or red) alternates between red and white coloring. So, you could "follow" the trail of a red shape in either direction since no matter which way you go, it LOOKS like the red is moving with you, wince your brain cant see both happening.

I think it is cause every few seconds it stops and starts extremely quickly and that makes us think it is alternating directions

I`m thinking it`s because the dot is slightly to the left of center.

Male 722
the red dots are moving counter clock-wise and the white are moving clock-wise

Female 3,562
I`m guessing they change when you look at the dot because you`re actually looking at the after-image when you focus on the dot, so the opposite stripes look lit than they really are.

you can "make" them spin both ways, you just have to think the way you want them to spin. they`re not rotating, the white stripes become red and the red become white at the same time.

If you cover up the picture and just show two of the squares (one red, one white) you`ll see they move back and fore not in any direction, I think it depends which way you look at it then, if you look toward right bottom it`ll appear to rotate clockwise, where if you look toward the top it`ll be counter clockwise (be aware this is still by starrin at the dot, just focusing on other areas in top of your eyes)

I know they`re not really spinning but i think your perception of how they spin depends on your dominant eye.

Has zero to do with colors.

It`s pretty simple. Imagine the stripes blinking, not spinning at all. Like a LED marquee.

If you were to make a single dot appear as if it were scrolling left or right, you`d light each bulb in procession, making it look as if it were moving.

0XXXX
X0XXX
XX0XX

So on.

So now if the marquee is circular, and instead of a single dot, there are alternating dots all around in a circle, you`d just alternate between the non lit and the lit ones to make it go right, and do the opposite for left. Thing is, inverting the pattern here results in the same pattern. So it`s going left AND right and confuses the sh*t out of your brain.

WHAT `red stripes`? Those are red polygonal subsegments of a section defined by the XOR intersection of two regular ovoids with rotational vector based on the centre of the arcs described by the ovoids.

I wish IAB would get these descriptions right for once!

Here`s a link that explains not only this illusion, but the spinning girl one as well. And bobhub600, the white parts are light blue because the color receptors in your eye grow fatigued, and you perceive another color, to compensate. Article here

well it isn`t spinning, but my brain makes it seem as such. Regardless, I can make my brain think it is spinning one way, and then make it think it is spinning the other way as well, all I have to do is focus on the separation between colors for a moment, and ta-daaa, it looks like it is spinning the other way now. No need for the black dot

You can change the direction they spin by resetting your perception of it. You don`t have to take your eyes off the circle.

One side of your brain is working harder then the other, I`ll take those 100 points.

Reminds me of the spinning silhouette. The colors are just blinking back and forth, and your mind, looking for a similar real life occurrence, assumes it is a circle that is "spinning" in one way or another.

Male 3
Main focus with your left eye, it turns counter clockwise. Main focus with your right, it turns clockwise.
It`s the minute difference in time from the data hitting one eye to the other that tricks your mind. Works on the same principal of those "Real 3D" glasses you get at Avatar screenings.

spin either way pending on how your eyes approach.
0
Reply
Male 59
depending on which eye is your strongest one it spins a certain way. when i close my left eye it spins right and when i close my right eye it spins left. so if your right eye is stronger than the left it spins right.

Female 612
Since the red stripes are replacing the white (and vice versa) rather than actually "spinning," the mind makes it appear to be spinning because that is a concept we understand better than the white turning red and the red, white, at regular intervals.

I think.

Oh, and also, to make it switch, I don`t "strain my eyes" or try to look at it funny, or whatever people say, I can just make it switch with no effort.

its a gif, so i dont really trust it. it could actually switch which way it turns. or it could be doing what it is supposed to and just blink the red squares back and forth making it appear that they are spinning.

its to do with your primary perception of movement, your brain wants gathers information of what its likely to happen, most ppl will look at this the first time, and see it going clockwise, when straining your eyes you can convince your self its going anticlockwise
0

Male 126
aren`t they just alternating so your brain gets to choose which way they spin?
0

Male 758
No, no, bumble, there`s movement. It`s just the red and white is only going back and forth 1 spot. You choose which way! Yay choices!
